I came across this video by accident several weeks ago when I was procrastinating and it really put things into perspective.

It has helped me to focus more on my business and take the uncomfortable actions that I know I have to take. And every time I don't feel like doing something in terms of my business (like prospecting) I remind myself of this video or even watch it.

It hasn't completely eliminated my procrastination but significantly reduced it and thought it might be useful for someone here as well!

the best way to stop procrastinating is to avoid distractions like social media, youtube, porn and stuff like that. You can download an app that blocks the websites that you waste your time on

I fully believe that fear and pain are the best antidotes to procrastination.

We are here only for a brief period of time. And whatever time we have left is not constant in its quality. As we age, the number of problems increases, our health deteriorates, and everything is basically going downhill if left unattended. To quote @MJ DeMarco : we are on a sinking Titanic.

So let's do as much good as we can. While we still can.

You really do just have to be a little bit crazy, huh?

Crazy enough to call that person.
Crazy enough to walk up to every attractive girl you see.
Crazy enough to ask for everything you need to get you to a new stage in life.
Crazy enough to choose to do the scary things that need to be done to live an amazing life.

I was asked by a family member recently, "Why Mike, Why do you want to travel the world? Can't you just stay here in New Jersey and be happy?"

Because contentment is absolutely terrifying.

The guy in the video should've mentioned social media.

If someone spends 5 hours of their free time per day watching social media during their "living time", my god!

I just did the math -

20 minutes spent on social media per day is 5 freaking days over the course of a year.

How many of us are spending hours on social media as opposed to 20 minutes?
Spending time arguing with someone for no reason and clogging our brain for the next 24 hours?
Sitting in our rooms for hours depressed when the only thing that can take us out of depression is action?
Flipping tabs, checking our phone, destroying hours of our productivity and forward movement..
Doing the same thing every, single, day..

How many of us are stuck in unnecessary addiction loops whether it's to drugs or social media?

How many times did we check our phones today, just to see if that person answered?

Omg.

Just go do that crazy freaking thing.
There's no time to sit and be patient.

I get told "Relax Mike, you have so much time in life to be successful"

I always reply - "No, I don't."

I think that this is a good start, but a bit unsatisfying without adding prescriptions to the end of it.

Everyone knows they can literally just stop doing things. Even with an app, you still have to decide to make the commitment to download the app and then you have to decide to KEEP the app once your 3 minutes of motivation fades.

It's basically just saying "Avoid distractions by not doing things that you like doing". Your answer frames the problem in such a way that the solution is just to cut off access to things you like to do. This is usually a losing battle long-term.

I think the answer is using whatever motivation you may have to actually change your values. That way when motivation naturally fades, you don't rescind back to your previous actions. Your values have changed and your actions follow your values.

It's kind of what I try to address in my Bootcamp thread. Harnessing whatever little motivation you have now to make changes that will change your habits and trains of thoughts. I don't think there is any exact formula to changing values/habits, but we have all went through it. You like X hobby for a bit and then you realize that one day you like Y hobby. You may not have even stopped liking X hobby, it's just that Bobby came into town and showed you Y hobby so you started researching it and before you knew it your daily life was taken over by the new thing.

The key there was there was some kind of external force that launched you into the new thing. It's tricky trying to recreate something like this, but I think completely immersing yourself in the topic you want to get motivated in is a good start. You have removed the previous values from your attention and surround yourself with the values you want to pick up. Then the goal is for something to peak your interest and start snowballing.

People think after a lifetime of good living, then they will die.

No, I'm sorry. Your life is ending 1 minute at a time. The thing is though, companies that steal your time want you to forget about this fact. You procrastinate in peace because they stimulate you just enough and keep you soothingly sedated.

SHHH... don't you feel good? Now keep on consuming and stay irrational.

You gotta get angry that these things play you for a fool.

I think it's necessary to always have your inevitable death in mind and let it be a big motivator for your daily routine. It makes the so-called "hard choices" so much easier and procrastination that much more painful. I believe in this so much that I give myself a greatly reduced deadline for my death day. I'm 21. On my monitor, there's a sticky that says I will die in 2 years.

Am I a masochist? No.

I just think that if I died in 2 years, there is nothing stopping me from doing what I want. All fear of rejection, failures, and tension seize to matter. Procrastinating becomes significantly harder because I WILL DIE IN 2 YEARS! Wanting to talk to the cute girl is significantly easier because I'M DYING IN 2 YEARS! F*cking around on youtube and social media is harder because I ONLY HAVE TWO YEARS! Taking a chance on myself is significantly easier because I ONLY HAVE TWO YEARS.

I should change two years to just a month, or maybe a week, or maybe a day. If I died by the end of tomorrow, how would I use it then?

That is a very limited way of looking at it!

It all depends on what you do. You can be floating around in your pool and procrastinate when you actually should be going to your desk and making cold calls. Then you can have the best app to block social media, YT, porn, etc. in the world and it won't help you stop procrastinating.

But you could also be on social media, YT, etc. and not procrastinate because that's what you need to do for your business. For example, analyzing the competition or a prospect on social media, uploading your YT videos, getting ideas and inspiration from other YT videos, etc.

I believe it all has to start with a mindset shift and not with some apps that can help you block certain websites. Then if course these apps can be useful as well but it all has to start in the mind.

It all depends on what we need to do to grow and become better people and entrepreneurs.

I want to add this:
It's also not only about working but also enjoying time with family and friends and and doing things you truly enjoy. Which is also something that procrastinating can stop you from doing.

A bit scary when you think about it.

Another litmus test is this.... if you can leave this world with ZERO regrets, you've won at life.

That one is extremely difficult to achieve I think but not impossible. Mainly because perspectives, values and things you want to do and not do in life change over the course of someone's life.

I am certainly on a mission to die with zero regrets and I have a list of things I want to achieve (similar to your 1/5/10 Strategy plan). Many of which are not business related like seeing my future children grow up and being a great father, husband, friend, etc.

There is a quote from Denzel Washington and I am paraphrasing here but it's something like this "Everything you have in life right now, you have to leave behind when you die, so make damn sure you make the most out of it"

This thread really kicked my butt about motivation.
Excellent thread.
I'll add this :
“Only those who procrastinate for a long time often forget their why. '' When procrastination sets in, you have to remember the reasons that led you to do what you have chosen to do and especially our limited time which is not to be wasted no matter what.

installing apps that block Entertainment Sites is not the best solution because you can always unblock them at any time.

For a long time, since my college I struggled too much to leave social networks (Facebook) but I got there. but for the past few months i have been able to do it because i have known ''why'' i should do it. I keep my phone on all the time but I can't log in anymore. Everything is a question of priority / importance. (state of mind)

I agree. Mind hates boredom and, simply by cutting all things that don't send you upwards, you will get into an up-spiral.
Note:
Do not cut final destinations like spending time with people you love. If you already have these blessings (having people you love, is one of a person's wealth), give them your precious time. Cut everything else.

i agree with this statement. I don't think too much about breaking habits, I just focus on the what i need to be focused on at the time. Although, i did take a break for a month, because my brain needed to rest and i had to do other things transitioning to a new direction. Now, it's just getting focused on building a stronger foundation then before. Although, this is what life is about adjusting and adapting. I can focus better now with progressive glasses with blue light lenses. I must be getting older. Ha ha! My eyes were getting bad this year real fast. Glad i can read better now.

I've been getting bored with social media the last year. I really haven't been there much for awhile.

Very very motivating, I think my biggest issue right now is procrastinating on tasks that I feel are just out of reach of my skill set even though they are necessary for what I want to do.

Watching that twice is kicking my a$$ and screaming "Do It Now"

Great thread!

That’s awesome you think it’s motivating! In terms of doing tasks that are out of reach for your skill set, is there away you can do it differently or break down those tasks into smaller chunks to make it more manageable?
