Selling sweets from my country

Hey guys,

yesterday I had the idea of selling sweets from my country online. I know that many people love american food, so why not the other way around?
My country has some unique sweets, some of them are known internationally, some are not.

Now my thoughts are: Will someone pay such high prices (like $8 for 200grams of cookies)?
Will the shipping kill this idea ($7 up to 1kilogram, $17 up to 2kilograms)?

It was just a spontaneous idea. Let me know if it's good or bullshit.

Best Regards
V

That's not very much information to go on.

I know, but this thread was just supposed to evaluate this whole idea to see if it's worth looking into. Maybe it's total nonsense because no one wants to those prices? I don't know.

What information could I provide to help you guys evaluate?

What kind of sweets from where?

Mostly Chocholate and Cookies from Germany (Kinder for example, I think you guys know this brand). Maybe also gummy stuff like Haribo, even though I think Haribo went international over the past years.

Those are pretty big/common brands. Maybe you could niche yourself down a bit to something more unique?

What about other brands like Leibniz, Bahlsen, Storck, Ritter Sport, Manner, Funny Frisch. Do they also export to foreign countries like the US?

We also have 'niche' stuff where there is no big brand behind, but that's not too common.

there are some people from Nürnberg. They Export Nürnberger Lebkuchen and make a killing with it but they are involved some how with the manufacturer, the main country they export to is Japan and general asia. I think thats the only way you can make money out of it with special niches.
How you would even buy those sweets in bulk? you will never get any discount from ferrero they have contracts... it would kill all your margins!

You can get most of those brands in international stores.

If you were going to export/import, why not make your own stuff and sell it? Reselling major brand candy isn't going to give you the margins to make anything.

... or export it to a market that isn't as hyper competitive. Expat communities in Africa come to mind. Volume will be lower, but we used to pay a ridiculous mark up for some damn Ritter Sport.
