Reminder to everyone that we are in the final quarter of the year.
Your employer is running the numbers with the bean counters from McKinsey. They always do this at the end of the year and for planning the budget for 2027.
Your manager may already know that your head is on the chopping block.
If you work in tech there's a very real chance they'll gaslight you with a fake PIP(Performance Improvement Plan). The majority of the time they're not actually used for improving anything. It's just a way for the company to protect themselves from unlawful termination lawsuits.
Keep a record of all of your past performance reviews and communications with your manager. If you have amazing past performance and they suddenly throw a PIP at you, understand it has nothing to do with you.
They'll lowball you with a weak severance package. If they gaslight you with a fake PIP, they deserve some BS thrown back at them. Stand up to the bullies. Let them know that you'd like to have an amicable separation, but are ready to file a claim with the EEOC if you cannot come to a mutual agreement on the severance package. If there's some wage theft (which happens to pretty much everyone in tech sales) then file with the Dept of Labor too.
The expenses involved for them paying lawyers to deal with the EEOC is far greater than simply giving you more severance to disappear.
If they send their lawyers to intimidate you with BS and empty threats, immediately go on medical leave to squeeze a few more weeks/months out of the job. Your role will be legally protected during the time that you're on leave. Then when you return start negotiating more severance.
Don't cave in to the fake deadlines. They create those because you're 100x more likely to make a stupid move when you're in a highly stressed emotional state. Let the fake deadline pass to show them that you know they're bluffing.
They want you to sign on the dotted line that they owe you nothing. Your signature is what they want.
Fake PIPs and fake unlimited PTO are two of the biggest scams in the American employment world.
