Thanks a lot Steve for such a detailed answer. I'll have a look at all the places you mentioned.

Yes, I am big into hiking and everything outdoors. I'm also an amateur photographer (landscapes and wildlife), so I tend to go out very early or quite late. In my little corner of the world, this plus being able to hike a lot usually take most of the crowd out.

I'm aware these places are very touristy so I'll try to go out of the beaten path when possible. Got to accept the crowds too at some point, it's hard to go to the US for the first time and pass on watching the Grand Canyon and others because of it. Kind of like going to Rio and not going to the Corcovado.

Interesting what you're saying about Antelope Canyon, despite its beauty I had written it off because of the "going in line one after another and don't stay too long" thing.
My wife and I went with @biophase to antelope canyon. It was in the area of our white-water rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. Wonderful adventure. We also went together to Havasupai falls. That guy gets around...

I've hiked the grand canyon a few times. Details of one of the trips are here: OFF-TOPIC - The Grand Canyon

The video and picture links don't work any longer but it was a cool experience.

Wow, I am away for a few days and this thread really got interesting.

For the life of me I don't understand why if someone had an issue where they had to cry, apparently 4 times, to get their account deleted. Just stop going to the site?

On a side note, kids are hilarious. My son, who is 3.5, knows that the "F word" is bad. He has heard it a few times in his life, and went through a few days where he constantly said it because he knows he should not do so, the little turkey. So now, months later, he keeps going up to me and asking "dad, can I say fox?". Yes son, you can say fox, fox is an animal. Haha. What a cute little guy. I miss my babies so much now that they are big (little) kids, but with the growth comes new adventures. I don't want to miss a thing!!!!!!!

Whoa, did chosen1 leave the forum?

I saw his progress thread lit up last night but seeing some aftershocks of some drama and that he deleted it.
Still surprised, he was asking for advice iirc and he got it, did he just mentally shut down and start refusing advice? Hell of a way to flush years of posting and camraderie down the drain like that. Hope he gets a chance to cool off and re-asses.
Yes, he did.

I tried my very best, if you go a few pages back,

He throws a tantrum like a baby.

Saying things like “why cant I do this”, “you guys are all POS”, “your calling me immature while being immature”

Etc

Sadly my last resorts,

Yo wtf happened, I was reading for a few hours n I come back to this?

@thechosen1 hopefully you haven’t requested to delete your account yet, but

AND I MEAN THIS IN A FORM OF INFORMING YOU.

you tend to make decisions off your emotions.

Its okay if you leave the forum.

But spend a few days thinking about it, let your mind chill out.

If you still want to, do it.

Our lives won’t change.

But if you stay you might change some other peoples lives.

You can log out for a few days, but to my point…

You take the blue pill... the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe, you won’t change anyone’s life. You take the red pill... you stay in the fastlane forum wonderland, and you show us how your business goes.

View attachment 50818

Okay, but your not getting my point, sure it’s not the most important thing in your life, but

YOU might make that change for someone.

YOU can be the reason why someone changes THEIR lives

YOU can be the one who can quite frankly, accomplish anything, just with feedback.

YOU can choose what you do.

Hell, I want to keep getting updates about your product.

Just, give it a few days man, you might regret it.

You’ve clearly spent a ton of time on here, so it be worth even 15 minutes just to breath on it.

Sleep on it.

I hate it when people make emotional decisions.

I know me, a 13 year old boy who’s in yoda Pajamas as he types this might not have an impact on your decision.

But I just wanted to share that..

If your going to delete your account, good bye and best of luck.

Did not succeed.

I really thought that my matrix reference would get him.

It didn’t.

Oh well.

Interesting stories from 6-figure earners. I found the one about the guy who ditched NY for Texas particularly interesting -- he improved his life by simply moving.

Too bad they don’t have Canadian locations, but if they did, Toronto would be top 3..

If anyone’s curious, a 1 bedroom apartment rents for 1500-2000 a month here.

Each sq ft is a thousand dollars roughly..

Now you might guess that the real estate market is going to crash, well..

Then the whole country would collapse,

Everywhere in Canadas pretty expensive.

Real estate makes up 20-25% of Canadas GPD.

Just a little rant;)

Got a practical question for you Americans ! In a few weeks, I'm leaving for one of my dream trips to the US, mainly to the national parks of the West: Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Yosemite... How likely is it that I may pick up some signal on my phone at these locations? My business can mostly run without me, but I still need/want to be able to oversee things a bit. Tagging those who I think might be able to help @SteveO @biophase @Runum
Most national parks do not get any cell signal. I know Yellowstone and Yosemite do not. Grand Canyon may depend on south rim(most popular) or north rim. I don't remember getting cell signal in Zion. These parks have huge mountains and deep canyons that minimize cell signal. Many national parks are going to online reservation system due to crowds. If you get to go in a National Park without a reservation go early in the day(be in the park at sunrise) to beat the crowds. You my catch a small break as the crowds will be less after labor day. I hope you have an awesome trip. Post plenty of pics.

You should get service at most of these places. I don't recall any real issues.

I quit going to the national parks due to crowds and congestion.

Last time at Bryce, we had to sit in a line. One car out and one car in. We ended up circling around to the bottom of the canyon where a local sent us. Nobody down there. Great hike and views. We still saw Bryce from inside the park but bolted fit more serenity.

I love zion. Such immense beauty. We took a hike up angel's landing. There were so many people. Lots of cables to hold onto for safety but crowds so thick it was a hazard in my opinion.

Are you big into hiking? I hiked up Mt Whitney which is on the backside of the range where Yosemite is located. I ran into some hikers that had crossed the range to visit Yosemite without dealing with the crowds. It was a multiple day hike though. One of them borrowed my phone to call work. We were miles away from anything and at 14,000 ft up. My cell service worked up there.

The Moab, Utah area has 2 national parks. It is crowded but there are many things to see and do.

A spot that is difficult to get into but very remote and uncrowded is the Wave. Also in Utah and not far from Bryce.

Antelope canyon is quite a sight. Not too crowded but you can only go out there with a Navajo guide.

Havasupai falls is an incredible place also. Crowds are limited by how many people can fit into the campsites. Most people hike in and out. 10 miles in though. Some people can do it in a day but it is worth staying the night.

I love the American west so much that I don't see a need to travel abroad anymore.
The wave was/is on my bucket list. You can get a permit to go by online lottery. If you don't win the lottery you can go to the BLM office in Kanab, UT and they issue a limited number of passes there daily. The wave is a 7 mile moderate hike I couldn't make when I was there due to ankle injury. You can hire local guides to show you more of the obscure scenery if you want. A nice alternative to the wave is Valley of Fire State Park about an hour north of Las Vegas.

Let me refine my statements. The parks generally cover many square miles and rough terrain. There may be weak cell signal in some areas of the parks but everyone is trying for the same signal. I wouldn't go to a national park expecting to get cell service.

Hardy came home from school and proudly showed his mom the cheap plastic trinkets he had earned that day.

“I stood quietly on the dot and so I got some tickets. And if I stand on the dot quietly tomorrow, I can get some more prizes!”

First grade! That’s one way to indoctrinate kids in both obedience and consumption.

It’s rare we see it so brazenly and vividly executed.

Is standing on a dot the thing we need to train kids to do? Has each of us spent too much time standing on dots already?

I can comment on the eink. Not on the scribe.

I have a nice iPad and I recently bought a 6 inch standard kindle, just for reading. It’s been excellent. It has made reading relaxing instead of a distraction laden mess.

I haven't used this, just the regular kindle with e-ink and I like reading on it.

There are competitors in this space, like this:

There are also supposedly color e-ink screens and likely color e-ink tablets like this coming as well.

I’m a big fan of my reMarkable 2 tablet. And I know a dozen people who have one and love it too. A few of us looked into the Scribe, but it’s not an impressive device. None of us bought one, just based on reviews and specs we passed.

Edit: example, reading a PDF report outside in the sun, and marking it up like it was on paper.

Does anyone own one? And if so, recommended?
So it depends. I would recommend it, if you want the larger screen to read on. I would not recommend if you want it as a primary writing device. The writing experience is secondary. I traded in my Oasis mainly for the larger screen. I thought it'll be cool to also write, but don't do much writing on it now, but like having the option.

The act of writing feels nice, but after that it’s kinda clunky. Like there is no search option that I see. The only search is for the kindle store. I can organize by creating notebooks and folders. But I have to know where I put stuff. They now have a notebook overview, where if a notes has multiple pages, then you can see the pages in a grid like format. But then you gotta squint your eyes to see the text, so you know what page you want to jump into.

I noticed that when companies or businesses use donations to a good cause, they blow up.

there was these two Italian restaurants, basically the same, I’ve gone to both and they have the same relative value.

Same customer service etc.

One of them?

They made a system where you can tip, but those tips go to malnourished children.

Over the span of a few years, the normal one went out of business.

The second one?

They now have 2-3 restaurants.

It doesn’t seem like a lot, but they both opened a few years ago.

Im pretty sure they are getting ready to franchise.

So moral of the story: if you can associate your brand with a good cause, it helps open up skews, USPS, and new markets.
I've been hearing good things about b1g1 "buy one give one" helping businesses do this effectively. Looks really interesting. Been around for ages so probably old news here but the first time I've heard about it was a few weeks ago lol.

  1. Imagine signing a publishing license contract with clear terms...
  2. Imagine paying the publisher advance...
  3. Then imagine disappearing for 4 years, never reporting royalties, never making royalty payments, never sending over advance copies for approval, and never abiding by ONE SINGLE term in the contract...
  4. Imagine ignoring every email regarding the contract and its status...
  5. Then imagine coming out of hiding, only because you want to get the license my other books...
LOL.

Hard pass.

These people make me sick

Every word of that article makes me sick

“Sentiment is shifting”

Is it?

This is particularly disgusting

“Some of the techniques, such as spraying sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, are known to have harmful effects on the environment and human health. But scientists and climate leaders who are concerned that humanity will overshoot its emissions targets say research is important to figure out how best to balance these risks against a possibly catastrophic rise in the Earth's temperature.”

I was outside on a walk when a neighbour who really cares about the environment and just human health was outside watering plants.

Someone was on the phone and they’re
like

“who the hell cares if this stuff is toxic to us and the environment? I hate this hot heat! Just pump these chemicals out!”

My neighbour sprayed that person with the hose and said

“There ya go! your cooled off!”

I laughed my a$$ off.

I agree though, there’s always a better way to something, people just need to learn that.

But that's why I shared the second article. Ship were already using sulfur particles to seed clouds. And "they" banned that practice. So now Biden's team is going to research it further to "bring it back"? Lol.

Team Sky is an excellent example of a 1% gains across every conceivable little gain possible. They re-defined how cycling teams won Tour de France.

Turn the clock back to 2010 and Britain had never produced a Tour De France winning rider.

The team was founded with the primary goal of producing the first British winner of the Tour De France. To accomplish this, it was decided that the core of the squad should be comprised of relatively young British riders, supplemented with several established foreign names. The first roster of Sky riders reflected this, including the likes of; Thomas, Froome, Wiggins and Stannard, alongside Simon Gerrans, Edvald Boasson Hagen and Thomas Löfkvist..

Marginal gains yield major rewards

The long list of triumphs enjoyed by Team Sky since their inception can be largely attributed to what is known as the ‘aggregation of marginal gains‘.

This philosophy was implemented by Dave Brailsford following his appointment as general manager of the team. In his own words, the basis of the theory is that “if you break down everything you could think of, that goes into riding a bike, and then improve it by 1%, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together. They’re tiny things, but if you clump them together it can be the difference between winning and losing.”

Their search for efficiency has included countless innovative tweaks, some of which may seem to the untrained eye to be tenuously linked to performance on a bike. Such changes include; travelling with their own mattresses and pillows to ensure riders sleep and recover as best as possible, colour coding water bottles to differentiate between water and energy drinks saving time on the road, and travelling on their state of the art team bus known as ‘The Death Star’, decked out with reclining padded seats, a shower, a treatment room, and a built in sound system.

Result? The British based outfit have produced the race winner 7 in a row.

Just watched this and it reminded me of your post. It's quite amazing to see the level of attention to details and dedication they got into, to break the record by... 0,8% !

Yet it only held 2 months after Filippo Ganna blew past it.

Was running home from the gym along a trail next to some power lines, and heard a loud pop/electrical arc noise. Then, saw a puff of yellow/brown smoke and a bunch of birds took off and start squawking. Caused a short power outage. Think it was a bird that just disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Just happened to see it right as it happened.
