UPS is the biggest piece of garbage shipping company I have ever experienced.
I bought a guitar in USA, had it at my brothers place for a while, and just had it shipped to Canada. I unfortunately picked UPS to handle this.
They want an additional $181 in fees to "clear" the item. Based on the category of item it is, I should be paying roughly $35 for this, the rest are made up fake BS by UPS. So I requested it to be "self cleared", where they send me the import documents and I can bring them to the border services here and clear it myself. I do it all the time with DHL, its a very simple process.
I guess it is too difficult for UPS to handle. I called the UPS number to request this on March 26th, and was met with an AI that literally says "I don't have an answer for that, I am still learning" to 100% of what you ask it. Anything. You can ask it the most basic of shipping functions and this is what it says, and there is no way to talk to a human.
So after some googling I found 2 email addresses where they can get you the info, I emailed them both. Replied to me later that evening and said they would get me the information, the other has yet to reply. This was all started on March 26th, it is now April 6th.
On April 1st they tried to deliver it, and wanted Cash on Delivery to give it to me. I said I was waiting to clear it and needed my paperwork, the driver said they would make a note of that for me. His note said this instead "The receiver does not want the product and refused the delivery". Thanks you a**hole.
Somehow UPS has managed to send me an email saying that if I don't resolve the import situation they will destroy my item at my own expense by April 8th though, so that was nice of them.
I complained via Linkedin PM on April 2nd, and they replied with another email address (which I emailed) and a different phone number I can call. I called it and talked to a human, who got the status of my package to say "hold at UPS depot". So that is an upgrade from them saying I don't want the package.
So here I am, April 6th, with no way to actually clear this package, and UPS saying they are going to destroy my guitar on the 8th. What an absolute joke!
NEVER. DO. BUSINESS. WITH. UPS.
When I do this with DHL I send them an email, that same day or the next day they send me a PDF that I take to the border office, pay my GST and get my stamp. I email the document to DHL, they release my package. Easy.
It has been like 11 days, and hours of emails and phone calls with UPS. The money is no longer the point. I don't give a shit about $150. What I do care about is never giving UPS another cent. Screw those guys. At this point it could be a $2 import fee and I still would not give it to them.
