Whether you are working on an online or offline project management is key to success.

If you have your own server and wants something that easily integrates with versioning system such as CVS, SVN and git then I recommend Redmine (Redmine - Overview - Redmine)

Overview¶

  • Multiple projects support
  • Flexible role based access control
  • Flexible issue tracking system
  • Gantt chart and calendar
  • News, documents & files management
  • Feeds & email notifications
  • Per project wiki
  • Per project forums
  • Time tracking
  • Custom fields for issues, time-entries, projects and users
  • SCM integration (SVN, CVS, Git, Mercurial, Bazaar and Darcs)
  • Issue creation via email
  • Multiple LDAP authentication support
  • User self-registration support
  • Multilanguage support
  • Multiple databases support
If you have had any previous experience setting up a Ruby on Rails application and already have a web server you can literally be up and running within 5 minutes.

If you do not want to host your own project management application a good alternative is BaseCamp (Project management, collaboration, and task software: Basecamp). This is what I am using for a current project I am working on. Basecamp is used by BestBuy, Kellog's, Adidas, Hard Rock Casino, etc just to mention a few.

Another project management tool is LightHouse (Lighthouse: Simple hosted Issue tracking, bug tracking, and project management software.). I have not used it personally but have heard nothing but good things about it. I intend to use LightHouse for my next project.

I have used base camp and project camp both were interesting. Did not really get to strech the legs ofbase camp though since it's a price per project system. For now it's low tech google Docs.

Will have to try out the other two you listed though. FTR LightHouse, is my nickname and has been for ahwhile, i have no association to that software LOL.

Thanks for posting these Sprite

Yeah BaseCamp and LightHouse are both hosted with monthly fees. Redmine is open source and you can deploy it on your own servers at no charge.

sprite, thanks for posting this information.

andviv, PMP

P.S. I have only used MS Project Server, so I don't have any input about the others.

If you would like a tool to manage your small business activities and Projects, you can use this web aplication:

Gtdagenda.com

You can use it to manage and prioritize your Goals (for business but also in other areas of your life), Projects and Tasks. It has a Checklists section, for the routines and repetitive activities that any business has to do. Also, it features a Schedules section and a Calendar, for scheduling you time and activities.

Some features from GTD are also present, like Contexts and Next Actions.

And it's available on the mobile phone too, so you can access it from anywhere.
