Okay, here goes... I know, I know. Another blog - womp, womp. Hear me out!

First let me provide a little value - @MJ DeMarco - Have you considered building a CENTS analysis worksheet? I think I would have paid, say $2, to not spend the time locating in the book, retyping questions, and then dealing with MS Word, formatting, etc. It would have solved my problem and saved me time. If there is a worry people will buy the worksheet instead of the book, maybe it's only available to readers who've purchased a book? My thoughts this AM began with "I wish there was a worksheet so I could jump right into this!" (re: today's TMF email)

    I've attached my CENTS analysis.

I won't say it passed with flying colors, but I do think it's a solid "GO". Some points that aren't included:

    1) I have a VERY strong launchpad for this blog - within 2 weeks my wife and I will announce her pregnancy on social media. That is inherently one of those posts that garners thousands of impressions and comments and linking (creatively) to the kickoff blog post should have me off and running.
    2) As far as mindset: If I had my way, we wouldn't even announce on social media. I barely check my facebook anymore. In other words, This is DEFINITELY not me trying to "do what I love." There is no narcissistic need for me to talk about myself in fact I lean the exact opposite. I even started thinking "who could I partner with to be the face of this thing?" BUT, Control.
    3) Scale- I don't need this business to fully Unscript my life. If I can turn it into even 5k a month I've bought myself the time to either double down (10x?) and take it to the next level, or move on to something completely different and much bigger.

If you made it this far, THANKS! I'm really excited about the journey ahead.

Want a little more background on me? INTRO "I'm pregnant"

As always, I'm here to give value, so if my domain expertise can help you, then feel free to reach out.

    All the Best!
    ~Blake

So here's my thought on dad blogs.

    There aren't really any.

Is this because no one wants to read dad blogs? Or is just because no one's done it right?

I think it's the latter, but can't be sure.

From reading your doc, I can tell you've got your head on straight here. You understand that the power of the blog is building an audience who will be receptive to your products down the road. Think about a book for adults as well... not just kids books.

Give it a go, and worst case, you build up a decent social media following, and you get brands throwing free swag your way.

Thanks for the reply and the compliment.

After doing some competitive research, the bulk of Dad blogs are garbage. I think to do it right takes careful consideration of the would-be audience. All I see out there now (unless I'm not looking in the right place) are dudes that are copy-pasting mom blogs on a masculine looking theme. Or worse, just trying to be funny and look cool in front of the other dads in their group.

I need to re-invent the whole damn thing! What could that look like?

My biggest concern is that this is literally THE last thing I thought I would do, so it feels wrong. But maybe that's just the same old fear of starting?

Or maybe the right biz for me is something else...
I'm a content guy (specifically video), and while high quality content is incredibly valuable, it's also very hard to scale and monetize while maintaining control. 1 million views on YT will pay about $500 - $1500. Are you kidding me? So you link to a product or do a review and I'm no longer making stunning video, but simply grinding out "branded entertainment" AKA commercials in disguise.

I don't mean this to sound like whining. I'm wondering if others might connect dots I'm not seeing.

I'll probably go forward with the blog since its staring me in the face and I'll regret not doing it more than doing it. Plus I can get some soft proof very quickly while learning a few new skillsets.

    Thanks for listening!
    ~Blake

Dad blogging is certainly a growing market.

Over this side of the pond one of the bigger dad bloggers is Man vs Baby who has managed to snag a few book deals off the back of his blog as well as writing credits for multiple magazines and newspapers.
There is another dad blogger who went on to form a company specialising in ante-natal classes for expectant fathers so the demand for male oriented views on parenting is certainly there.

Mum and Dad blogs at the moment seem to be a warts-and-all look at parenting with a dash of humour thrown in. My wife reads a lot of blogs regarding parenting and they all seem to follow this trend. There may be a market for something a bit more refined and informative.

    Yes, zero good ones.

Dads would probably be your audience, yeah?

You know what I’d want to read about? Cool shit you do with your kids. Adventures, camping, backyard obstacle courses, DIY treehouse building... basically inspiration for what I could do with my own kids.

I don’t care as much about your feelings and your lack of sleep and “getting real” like the mom blogs do.

It doesn’t need to be obnoxious, trying-too-hard-to-be-funny, like the one decent-sized dad blog I was able to find.

You’ve said this a couple of times and it’s the only thing that concerns me about this whole idea. Why would you do something that you hate? I mean, most businesses are going to be a bit of a slog to get up and running, but to dislike the core of what the business is? Can you pinpoint what the feeling is around? Is it just creating written content? Getting personal with strangers? Something else?

Happy to be an occasional guest writer for you. I’ve had this same idea and know the need, but have no desire or time to manage something like this full time.

Yes and yes! Enough with the whining. I don't want to read about your whining or how you're barely surviving. Let's make it aspirational and even inspirational. Right? It's what I would want to follow and read about - a Dad who's crushing it! So I can steal some of his tricks.

@amp0193 I'll take you up on the content offer for sure. Especially, considering I'm not even a Dad yet!

Here's a tip: never take advice from people about something they personally haven't done successfully.

Everyone running around shitting on blogging left and right, normally has never even started one. And for the people that say they've been blogging for two years and have never made a dime, don't listen to these people... they don't have a clue what they're doing.

Just start the dad blog, it will work. (if you don't quit and continue to evolve throughout the process)
