Hi guys, just a quick one. Obviously from the title of this post I have a passion for poker, and after listening to MJ's books on audible it's clear he's also a fan of the game. Now the reason I'm posting this is because I've been flirting with the idea of giving poker a shot full time. Just wondering if there's any poker players in here, also what are your thoughts on taking up a path like this? Entrepreneurial? Wreckless? Unsustainable?

Former lower end mid stakes pro who knows a ton of poker players who have made it work. Do you have a sample size of your experience you can share. How long been playing? Online or live, or both. Tourney or cash games? To answer if wreckless or unsustainable need some info.

Sounds like a long grind, and only becomes entrepreneurial when you combine it with something else. Like teaching people, organizing tournaments, managing players, promoting a personal brand, promoting sponsors, creating media around it, etc.

Hi mate, thanks for reply. Yea I keep track of my data on Holdem Manager pretty decent sized sample. I've been playing around 5 years but not been able to really give it all my time due to work / kids commitments. I have studied a fair amount and feel I've a decent knowledge of game theory.

Mainly online and have the backing of my partner to give it a shot. But I feel fear is holding me back from really going for it incase it goes tits up.
My plan is to build a bank roll and save enough to cover life expenses for a year or 2 before I attempt it.

Did you play full time or just recreational? Why did you stop playing ?

I played fulltime for like 4 years both online and live. Much better live player as what I started with back in the early 2000s poker boom after Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP main event. I actually shifted to media side and affiliate marketing with my own poker social network that had a Bitcoin fueled room attached to it in 2017. I could never get it off the ground. Ironically if I just did nothing and held onto the Bitcoin would of been a multi millionaire but we all know how that goes. I quit as shifted over to cannabis media and wanted to focus on that.

I lost my love for the game over time as just became a grind and was not fun like when was rec. People are very dirty and is just a zero sum industry.

The poster who suggested that list of things is right if you want to make it entrepreneur but I'm not sure how the affiliate side is anymore. Used to be huge as just bring players to a online room and get a percentage of the rake over and over. To coach you need great skill and history.

Your plan of working real job and just building a roll is the way to go. Once you go pro it's a whole new world of hurt as even great players run negative EV due to the luck of the game. It's entirely possible to make it work but can't have the fear of going broke and just need to be solid in all ways around. A rough way to go if have a family for sure. I'd just become a part time crusher and once dominate over a few years period make the switch. I'd spend time on Two Plus Two to get more of a feel from those actually doing it.

I played a bit online when I was an IT contractor trying to figure out how to work from home.

I built up to making $2k one month and then my first son was born. The next month I made $0. That was when I realised I'd created a j.o.b.

I was paying $20/mth for an online forum with courses which had a few thousand members. I figured the membership platform owner probably wasn't playing poker anymore, but was playing golf instead.

I could see you being a great live player, totally nice guy to play with throwing people off, but a devil raking in the chips. Also if your poker face is like your profile pic would really throw some people off :).

Those membership courses can do really well as technically solving a big problem for passionate players who just need initial and constant training. Doug Polk is the king of poker training, not sure if he is still active, but he had a really interesting entrance into that space with a shock video on Two Plus Two like five years ago and built a empire.

I was crap. I can't remember things, can't add up in my head (even though I've a degree in Maths), and I think in straight lines not onion layers.

Interesting on the straight line. Least you realized that. I was good at one time and got worse in end as was just distracted and the game evolved. In order to conquer must be a never ending student and also have emotional control with a Stoic balance, which was not in my cards.

Interesting take . Thanks for all replies, I fu*king love this forum. Gave me a new vision of the game I love to play & it's clear there's more than one way to make $ in poker than just playing it ;)

Remember the Time component. How will you NOT be exchanging revenue for time?

What I like about business is it's a win-win.

What I eventually didn't like about poker was it's a zero sum game. I profit from other people losing.
