Hello Fastlaners,

So I just recently finished the Fastlane Millionaire...

The concepts that he has written about are things that I have began to recognize slowly in life already. I had already started to coin the term "getting table scraps from my bosses." before even reading this book. This book puts into words, exactly how I have begun feeling about the drudgery of working for someone else. It has gotten to the point where I am sick of myself and those around me.

I know I'm not the only one..

When I read this book, it was like a new course of blood ran through my veins. Things that I subtlety knew recently, the book drew these things out of me. Before the last several months, I always thought that I needed to work several years, save up a lot of money and maybe one day I'll have enough money to start my own business. But I am starting to realize that starting a business cannot remain forever chained to the future. Starting a business needs to start now. I deduced that not only is taking the fastlane an option, it was the only option. Otherwise I will become a hollow shell, milked for all spirit left in me.

About me and how I came to the revelation of Fastlane.

I graduated in Mechanical engineering a few years ago. Like much of the populace I drank the Kool-Aid when it came to education. "Get an education in engineering and you will be guaranteed Middle-Classdom." Which was fine by me, I wasn't looking to become rich, just live comfortably. You know, have a little house in the subs, have 2 cars, a couple of kids, a little bit of backyard, etc, etc. even if I had to save a little for a few years to make it happen.

But that was too much to ask for...(After all, I have to save up for a new business and a home, a few cars, etc and I haven't even began to think about retirement.)

When I graduated, I landed my first job, ( I had a few internships before that...) It was not easy to get one either. I was told when given the salary, (which was very low for a starting engineering salary.) that it would increase after my probation period. At the time it made sense to me, they don't want to invest 100% yet, as I may not be qualified enough. After the probationary period, I got a measly 1.00 $ raise. They gave me some excuses about not having certain certificates, blah, blah as to why it only increased a little bit and that they would review it in six months.

Six Months go by....

"We can't give raises right now, we are low on money."

At this point I'm fuming, they also take away some of the benefits when employees are traveling out. The boss is never there, My engineering design work is often ignored for a month or so at a time. (We are a small company so this shouldn't be.) Most of the time I'm a glorified data entry clerk (did not need a degree for this.) Tried for the last 6 months to find new employment, no avail. Company is doing poorly, they could lay me off at any moment. Several engineers are laid off in this area already and looking for work. One of my good friends, an engineer with more years experience than me, hasn't found a job in 2 years!

Then things got worse, my fiancée who shares expenses with me lost her job...

Now my way below average wage has to keep both of us afloat. Now I have no choice but to continue to work here, unless I find something new. I have nothing to show for my engineering degree, I can't afford one car (I have to commute, which takes 1 hour 15 minutes each way.)

I came to the realization that if I continue to let other people "decide" what they pay me and feed me table scraps, when they feel like it. I will always continue to feel miserable and never go anywhere in life. Searching for a solution, I came across fastlane millionaire. At first I was hesitant, as often these type of things tend to be wastes of time designed to jack money from you.

Two things differentiated this from other "self-help" books.

1) How well aligned the information in this book was to how I already began to feel about life and finding another way to live life.

2) The existence of these forums. They are abundant with people that already have the fastlane mentality and have completed several successful projects.

"Gurus" like mentioned in the book, spend a lot of time either talking about nothing or fill you with slowlane advice.

Why I'm here

I have 2 great ideas that have been swimming in my head for a while now. (I know an idea without an ability to make money is useless, but bear with me here.) I have come to the forums to gain advice on how to proceed with either (or both). I will make appropriate threads for each one a bit later.

IDEA 1:

A website that connects local freelance contractors, to people in need of home repairs and home projects. Think Justeat's model for project/repairs instead of food. Contractors will be approved based on given criteria and reference checks. Users can interface with the contractors using the website and give more details in written and image form. The website would charge a small brokerage fee for each transaction. There are plenty of skilled workers looking to gain extra income, Part timers, retirees, seasonal workers, etc. A problem I foresee is how to quote properly before a contractor takes a job and how to ensure not always getting cut out of transactions.

IDEA 2:

I am developing a small electrical device, I don't want to give too much away, but it is something that doesn't exist yet and it solves a heavily required need. Problem is I know dick about patenting and don't know how to propose it to companies for licensing.

Well that was a wall of text. I hope we can all be friends here, because I plan on spending a lot of time here soon.

Cheers!
