Ive been living on a farm on rural big island for the past 5 years. It has become very apparent that it is very difficult to create something for society while not participating with it. I have noticed my interpersonal skills have regressed over the last few years. It feels like I'm back to the social awkwardness of my teenage years but I'm 29 years old.

My wife and I want to move to Southern California (Los Angeles or San Diego) so we can get out of comfort zone and integrate back into society. We have some money saved up and a dream of creating a business that can positively impact many people.

We want to move in the next month or 2 and we are not familiar with the west coast so this is going to be a leap of faith. We feel like we have to if we want to increase our chances of being successful entrepreneurs. This will be a big change from our current lifestyle of living like 2 retired folks on a farm. We want a faster paced lifestyle and to plug-in to communities where we can continue to develop our interpersonal skills.

I don't have much to contribute to this community as I am new to entrepreneurship but I will make this a progress thread so others who are in a similar situation can benefit from our experience of moving to the big city.

I wanted to hear from anyone's experience who has moved from a rural town to a city to pursue a fastlane lifestyle. Also anyone has any input about living in San Diego or Los Angeles I would greatly appreciate your $.02

I once moved from Oahu to the Inland Empire of So Cal. Was one of the worst decisions of my life as the lifestyle change just blew my mind and I had immense regret which lead to all sorts of issues (did it for an ex).

I'd be careful where you choose, in particular if you went to LA, its alluring for some, but you really need a reason to be there. I've also lived in both San Diego and San Diego County backcountry and the differences between SD and LA are stunning. San Diego has a good vibe, but not sure what has happened there since I last lived there in 2015. Like most of So Cal it could of went to the pits. Also look into North of San Diego there are some gems in small beach towns, but bring your wallet.

Also Orange County may be a choice, a little more quieter in South OC like in San Clemente.

Damn, you live in paradise and you want to move to a hellhole. I don't get it. But well, maybe you need to move to appreciate what you have.

Hah I hear that all the time! but the main reason is that the pace of life is too slow for what we want out of life. rent has skyrocketed on the island (there is almost nothing available for long term rent) in the past couple years. We can't afford any property and I currently work for $20/hour (rent included) on a farm so I don't have any opportunity to build wealth. Our living situation has gone rotten and we can't afford to live anywhere else on the island so we want to move off so we can build an income producing asset which is our primary mission right now

Is your asset plan location independent or will you need to actually be near a massive city such as LA or big city like SD.

If your ultimate goal is to start an online business then why not simply do it now? Unless the other reasons are so important for you that you don't mind moving to Southern California.

By the way, how hard is it to find a job in tourism or start your own tourism business on Big Island right now?

I lived in the Los Angeles area for 30 years. I did well there. But, the business climate in CA is not good for new businesses right now. I would take a long vacation there before I would move my dog and pony show...

so I don't have any opportunity to build wealth.

Not sure moving to a state that will penalize "wealth" to the tune of 60% (including the Fed's take) is a good move for wealth. There are so many better choices than Cali.

I guess I’ll chime in.

My answer is… hell no.

Everyone I know including myself is trying to get out. I’m just here because I’ve grown up here my whole life(San Diego and Long Beach).

I’m also 29 years old just like you. I can’t speak for everyone but growing up here has been a miserable experience for me(I’m ok now). The government sucks a$$. They are socialistic and authoritative. The business climate is a joke. The compliance and regulations is a joke. I’ve never made more than $30k/year in a job here and I’m a college graduate. The traffic is out of control. Everyone drives like an a**hole. The homeless problem is out of control. The crime is out of control. The cost of living is out of control. Everything is always packed.

I would have loved to have grown up on a farm. My stress levels would have thanked me.

Our plan is either a physical service business or a product but it takes me a 1.5 hour drive to get to a populated town so doing anything that involves going places has a huge obstacle for me. I guess our first goal is to reintegrate into society so we can be exposed to problems that are worthwhile fixing

I haven't really considered a tourism business, but that is a great idea. The major motivator for moving is to leave our current living arrangement and finding a place for rent is almost impossible but this is definitely worth looking into as long as we can move out of our living situation in a timely manor

You can do that in any mid-sized US city... there are 100s to choose from, and moreover, those cities won't regulate and tax you to death. Three steps forward, three steps back is no way to get wealthy, unless you plan on being on the groundfloor of some startup in SF or LA.

I would also mention the absurd cost of living. A $5M house where I live is $25M in So Cal. That's $20M you don't need to earn to enjoy the same standard of living.

Whoa, Nellie. Everyone above is signing the death warrant for Southern CA.

@Toddo I hear what you're saying about the regression of your social skills and wanting to regain them. The singular most powerful weapon I have as an entrepreneur here in San Diego is my network. I'm bringing new products to market in a category I wasn't in prior and it's being possible by the braintrust I've cultivated over the years via in-person relationship-building.

Does that mean I think you should definitely move to San Diego/Los Angeles? Absolutely not. There has to be more your story as to why you have a hankering for Southern CA. What is it?

San Diego is a pretty amazing city and I've lived here for 30 years. Our businesses are doing well and there's no way I'd leave. However, there are many, many cities and towns in the US you could choose to accomplish the re-integration you and your wife are seeking.

Life if far more than work. So if there's something about the people, the opportunities & the lifestyle that draw you to Southern CA, then keep it at the top of your list. But look elsewhere to confirm your suspicions.

One final note: going from a big rural island to Southern CA could be like graduating from kart racing directly to Formula 1 in terms of speed of life and scale.

Wish you all the best in your quest.

Aloha brah,

I was raised on Oahu most of my life. I lived in Seattle for a couple years after college. Moved back to Hawaii for work, and I also have plans to move to Southern California soon (next year).

I think it really depends on what kind of person you are...The change and discomfort can propel in you a positive direction or it'll do the opposite. Ultimately it will all depend on you, and how adaptive you are?

You should make a couple trips out there first, get a feel for the place. Whatever you do decide to do or where you're moving, it'll be hard regardless. Change is good
