The answer to this question is something that I've been thinking about lately.

I've always wanted to have lots of money - I like nice cars, big houses and the freedom to travel anywhere but what like anything else shiny objects lose their appeal after a while. Just on a bigger scale. Not that I have reached that financial level yet - far from it.

So after I've bought the nice cars, been to exotic places and I'm living in a nice house then what?

I'm lacking a purpose. Or maybe I have a purpose but not the idea to run with. I literally only enjoy eating in restaurants, travelling, socialising with friends and family. I exercise regularly but my only hobby is watching football (soccer.)

When I'm on my death bed I know I won't be thinking I wish I sat on the couch more watching TV. Generally, that is is how I spend most evenings. My Facebook ads business is looking after itself, especially on lockdown and to be put it simply - I'm bored.

@RazorCut suggested that my current business doesn't get me excited to get out of bed and work on it every morning or whenever I have time and he's right. I would like to create a legacy business that I can build and look forward to working on. At the moment I can have all my work done by getting up at 6am and finishing at 12pm but I can't think of anything I want to do with the rest of the day that excites me. At the moment I don't have any ideas of what type of legacy business I could create. I just know something is missing from my life.

My ultimate dream would be to own my favourite Football club in UK and I would love to work on it each and every day to make it the best it can be. However, these days you'd need at least £10bn to do it.

Maybe it's a mid-life crisis. I'm nearly 40 now. I don't know. I just struggle with what to fill my spare time with and then wonder what's the point? Some days I've even just gone for a drive in my car for an hour or so to kill time.

So what is your purpose in life? Or maybe I should ask what do you do for happiness outside of work? I found these questions online which is supposed to help and I've put my answers next to them.

What’s something you want to learn? Spanish - As i want to live in Spain one day.
What’s something you’d be doing in your spare time? Travelling is all I can think of.
What do people always come to you for help with? Nothing I can think of
What’s a problem you can’t not solve? Don't know.
What do you love to do? Eat, travel, socialise with friends and family which usually entails alcohol.
What do you want to do less of and more of? Don't know.

I know everybody would like freedom, not to work a slowlane job or have their partner not work etc but after all that what's left?

Same thing I'm doing now. I'd build a software product with the intention of solving a problem for myself and others on a large scale.

I love building software products and want to own a software company that provides real value to the world.

Writing software and building systems is what I'm good at. It has the potential to help a lot of people, and it's a good way to support yourself if it succeeds in the market.

Sounds like you've got a lot of time to work on something more fulfilling. Maybe merge what you know about ads with your passion of soccer. What are problems that can be solved in markets that you care about?

I spent a week meditating, thinking and coming up with problems that I could solve, and then tested one of those ideas and ran with it.

Think about who you want to be. What kind of legacy do you want to leave? How would you like people to think of you? That can provide some more motivation.

Apart from that, you should never be bored, because as an entrepreneur you're looking for problems to solve all the time. Even when watching TV or even when listening to others complain.

The point of all this is that you're aiming to be a good person who makes other people happy, and therefore is happy himself or herself.

For further meaning, you have to look into spirituality, as I mentioned above. Do you have a kind of mission on Earth? Is there a God, and if so what is your relationship with the said God?

For me, if money wasn't an issue, I'd spend more time socialising, I'd play a few sports actively, and I'd be looking to make some positive change on Earth using the resources that I have. This would very likely involve building a business. And since I am a Christian, part of my mission would also be to get closer to God, and do my duty here on Earth.

Some of the questions I don’t know the answer to.

Although I’ve been baptised as a Christian I don’t believe in God sorry. I have a very hard time believing in something that no one can prove existed.

Hey Paul, have you considered supporting a second team in the lower leagues? I'm a big Liverpool fan myself but as you mentioned it would cost billions to own a Premier league or Championship club. However, if you get involved at a local club level you can get the same level of enjoyment. Sign up and start volunteering and slowly work your way up at the club. Suddenly you'll be working and trying to fund things like a training pitch, floodlights or a new dressing room etc.. you'll get to know all the players on a personal basis and you can be massive part of any title wins or promotions.

P.S I'm still planning on buying Liverpool but I know at the moment I can also contribute to the club I play for and make an immediate impact. Plus I'm learning everything that goes into the running of a smaller club.

I'd probably buy a lot of washers and dryers and fiddle with them in the garage and sell them. And then rent this big warehouse and plan to work and sell out of it but end up just filling it with washers and dryers and then a pandemic hits and luckily I'm supplied with washers and dryers for awhile so luckily that big warehouse that my wife thought was a stupid idea turned out really lucky for me. But that's just a guess at what I'd do.

Once my grandson graduates next year and then he gets degree (he wants to be a mechanic), I think we might buy this atv riding trail in the area. I want to rent out atv's (you could bring your own as well) and his job will be to maintain the atv's. If he still wants to do that once he graduates we will...... or the plan might change. I could ride around on atv's all day every day. I'm good with that being my legacy.

@ Paul

I feel like I'm in the same boat as you right now. Like you said, it seems like a midlife crisis. I am currently stuck in the slow lane and working my way to the fast lane. However when I look back on my life I have the exact same thoughts as you. Sure I have a great career, Ive been successful, nice house etc, ok now what?

I have to stay extremely busy and always working on something or else I start to get squirly on the inside. Being locked inside and everything shutdown doesn't help that for me either. Im not bored really, rather it's an extreme guilt that I am not doing more each day. Ultimately thats my fault though. I have been working on a new project for the last 5 months so I just try to keep my head down and keep pushing forward on that.

Aside from that I really have to do competitive things. Not so much to compete with others, but to compete with myself and what my perceptions of my abilities are. Martial arts are huge for me. It's a constant growth that only you can provide for yourself. It's ultimately up to you what level of success you want and how badly you want it. Boxing is my thing, but Ive don't many other forms as well and they've all given me some purpose. However selfish that purpose may be. Also motocross. Im a huge fan of riding and racing. Those two things go hand in hand as I try to always be training for some goal. Once I reach that goal it's on to the next one.

Family is extremely important to me. If I had more time and money weren't an issue I would like to travel with my family, make a bigger family, and have a farm.

None of this seems very purpose driven to me though. Still searching

@Paul David I was asking myself the same question a few weeks ago, and this helped me quite a bit.

It's a long talk by Frank Kern, and it all gears toward one question. I won't give away the question because without context it's not as powerful.

I spent a whole day in nature with nothing but pen and paper answering this one single question.

It created a sense of clarity in my life I hadn't before, and helped me decide on what I really want to create.

It might be useful to you. Here's the link:

Let me know if you watch it.

P.S.: You don't have to watch the last 1/4 of this video if you don't want, as he goes into more the marketing side of the question.

I’m semi in that situation now and I honestly don’t do sh**. Even before the pandemic I was just....relaxing. Taking things day by day
I’m planning on doing some traveling and whatnot when this virus situation calms down

but in all honest, just having the freedom is enough for me
The freedom to buy what I want without worrying about the ramifications
The freedom to get 8 hours of rest if I want it
The freedom to set my own deadlines and do what, whenever

This is the problem with passionless ventures. When you “make it” you feel empty...Do something your passionate about.

For me it is engineering the best products and learning about new materials. Making, building, inventing.I am in the process of making bank, but I have 100% found my purpose. Which I realized is far more important than dough.

If I really had billions, I would be be doing astrophysics and trying to find a new planet or developing a new energy source to solve the energy crisis.

I watched this video 2 years ago when I went through a mid life "realignment" . Please watch it.

I am of the opinion that if you aren't living up to your potential and you are aware of that potential, your mind and body will force you into depression for you to wake up. The process of becoming who you have the potential to be makes you happier. Along with having a purpose outside of yourself.

I'm not sure if Corona is calming or not but we are heading to Crystal Bridges for kind of a private tour. The wife got notice that she goes back to work in 4 weeks so we are going to start taking advantage of some of her connections. You should focus on some where to go that is usually crowded but is not crowded now yet you can still go to. If it opens in time we might head to the Grand Canyon. During my wife' time off I have stressed for her to relax.... is that an oxyMORON or is it just me? lol She is starting to warm up to the idea of retiring earlier now that she has had time off.

You are correct, just being free to do what ever you want is the best thing. I can sleep till noon or get up at 8am..... what ever I feel like. I still rarely get 8 hours sleep. As for buying things..... that has worn off for me. My big buy for the day was some glue spider traps from Amazon $2.78 cuz this is what I do when I see a spider........... :run:

Go to the store and buy a whiteboard.

Write down your authentic passions on it.

Now either go do them if you're set money wise, or build a business around one of them. Figure out how to monetize.

For instance, here's mine:

IMG_3283.JPG

Blocked out some of my roommates more personal ones. But you get the idea.

One of my biggest goals in life is to buy houses and turn them into "Hustle Houses." I will take 18 year old kids who didn't want to go the normal route in life and room them together in the houses. I will mentor them and push them, have daily meetings with them, whiteboards for everyone. Will structure their days so they can achieve max results as quickly as possible. Will keep them on track etc.

To me, this is the ultimate "giving back." This is something I've had in my mind for years, and is one of the driving factors for my hard work. I think about this every day and understand that the more I work now, the quicker I will get to do this thing that I've always wanted to do.

I noticed you posted "don't know" and "I don't have answers to these questions" alot. This is because you're not thinking hard enough.

Go book out a week meditation retreat somewhere, or do it at your house. Peace and quiet. No distractions. Phone shut off. No electronics.

Once COVID is over, go book a 2 hours session in a Float Tank. This disconnects your mind from your body. It's a crazy experience, and forces you to think.

These aren't questions you just come up with answers to while replying to posts. These are questions that could take months of thinking. This is your life, it's a very long term play here.

Think on it as long as it takes for you to come up with an answer. "I don't know" means think more.

Another good strategy to use is "ask why 5 times." Whenever you do something, ask yourself "why", what's the deeper meaning? Why did you build a business? Why do you live where you do? Why do you like traveling? Etc.

You need to become fully self aware.

Once you figure this out, a burst of light will come into your life. It's gonna take work so set aside some time for yourself and start thinking deep.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've just watched the video and written down the main question, the sub-questions and started answering them.

Some of them are easily answered, like where would you like to live, what would your house look like, what time would you wake up etc. Some of them seem easily answered but probably wouldn't do my health any good like eat bacon and sausage on toast for breakfast every morning ha.

Quite a few of the questions I'm going to need time to dig down and think of the answers.

Will keep you updated.

I live in Liverpool. I support Everton haha. I wouldn't actually mind buying Liverpool FC and folding it. It's caused me nothing but misery for years now haha.

To be honest, I'm not interested in any other teams, it's all about Everton for me but thanks for the suggestion.

Travel- if you have the ability to work remotely, it is a great option. You can spend months exploring a new city. Plus, $70k in Colombia is a lot different than $70k in NYC. In the Dominican Republic, I rented a 2 bedroom luxury condo for $675 a month, two blocks from one of the nicest beaches I’ve ever seen. The same condo would go for double even in a second tier US city.

Whilst you clearly need to do a deep dive on your "why", I thought I'd throw in a couple points on "high quality leisure" that I just picked up from reading Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport recently.

Prioritise demanding activity over passive consumption.
Use skills to produce valuable things in the physical world.
Seek activities that require real-world, structured social interactions.

For example:
Fix or build something every week - this could be fixing something around the house (if you don't know how to do something, cool, fire up youtube & find yourself a tutorial, you'll get to learn as well as do) or creating something - plant a garden, do some crafting or cooking. It doesn't need to be art if you're not so inclined, it just needs to be real/physical/non-digital (though to be fair, I've occasionally found hand coding a website to be fun & satisfying).

Join something - @JordanK had it right - the obvious example for you is a local football team. Even if you don't want to play, there will be amateur & lower level clubs catering to people of all ages that need coaches, or organisers, or fundraisers, etc. Some are just kick-about leagues for adults after work, some are dramatically helping young lives by getting them off the street & channelling their energy into something positive. Any which way, by contributing to a community you're definitely helping build something bigger than yourself, & you'll get a lot of satisfaction out of it too.

Oh, & for me, I'd do all the things I am already doing, but with more hours to do them - I have a long list of interests I pursue to varying degrees of seriousness/professionalism. From things I get to do right now, for both fun *&* money - like acting (well, sometimes get to do :smuggy: ), right the way through to following the NFL (zero professional aspirations - though owning a team looks like fun! In all honesty, more money would probably just mean being able to travel to more games, & get particularly sweet super bowl tickets!

It'd make other things I've not started yet easier (e.g. raise a family).

I'd also really enjoy spending a lot more time on investments/managing money - but that already fits into the first category of things I already enjoy doing, I just have less to manage right now! (And I still enjoy researching investments I don't even have the money for yet :smuggy: )

I would like to create a legacy business that I can build and look forward to working on. At the moment I can have all my work done by getting up at 6am and finishing at 12pm but I can't think of anything I want to do with the rest of the day that excites me. What’s something you want to learn? Spanish - As i want to live in Spain one day.

What do you want to do less of and more of? Don't know.

I know everybody would like freedom, not to work a slowlane job or have their partner not work etc but after all that what's left?
I just want to say that I really love what you wrote.
I read this book and I really liked it. Thought it might not give you the answer :)

Reading through this and getting down the the covid19 part and then the ATV park. Instantly the song “A country Boy Can Survive” popped into my head.

Everyone talks about learning skills and such, what is keeping you from learning some of these now? The more money I have the more valuable my time is and I am more likely to hire someone out Time>money. I just had a shed built and I asked what is the discount if I built it myself. It was only discounted $500 on a $5000 shed that would take myself 2-3 days to build or get it knocked out by 2 guys in one day, I paid the extra $500. It does feel great when you finish a project though that you previous didn’t know how to do. So for my free time it would be to help more people around me is small ways that can significantly improve someone’s life.

I would fly all over US and try all the steak from different Restaurants rating from Michellin Levels to the hole in the wall places. I would also search for the worlds best Carne Asad Burrito with no lettuce.

Personally, I'm full up on skills. All I do now is have fun.... truth be told, I have very few skills, I just lucked out and used them correctly. I'm not the type of guy that needs to go on learning and prove to people and leave a great legacy. I'm just here to have fun. I've always been this way. If we get the atv park my main job will be telling people how I want things to look and riding atv's all day. I'll have a manager and this time around, I have no interest in micromanaging. Or, if it becomes too big of a pain in the @ss, we will make it private and enjoy it ourselves.

I have done some travel. Been to parts of Europe and Tanzania. I figured out that traveling with luggage and staying in resort hotels does not resonate well with me. Long flights are very uncomfortable and confining.

I have owned a motorhome for many years. That is my choice of travel. Open air and wide open land. I tow the jeep along and can go lots of places. I really doubt that all could be explored in the remainder of time I have left.

I camp on the beach a few weeks per year, explore the national monuments and parks, find quiet places nestled in the mountains and lay in the grass fields and search for fishing holes that are beyond where people like to hike to.

Yeah... That's it for me!

I've spent a lot of time on this today and I'm making progress.

At the moment I don't have a life purpose as such, and this might sound selfish but I don't have this calling to leave the world a better place or personally try and solve world famine. It may change in future but at the moment I don't.

I also think that writing down your perfect day, whilst it does provide some clarity - can be a double-edged sword. For example, I believe that doing the same thing every day would soon end up boring. I also love to eat Fried Rice, curry and maybe Fillet Steak and chips but if I ate that every day I'd end up pretty unhealthy.

So now that I've found out what I don't want let's move onto things that I do want. I found out what I do want, by writing down my yearly earnings target then listed how my life would change when it happened.

It comes down to one thing for me - Experiences. I want to experience a range of things I enjoy regularly throughout my life, but they don't necessarily have to be every day.

For example, when I reach my target income, I can travel 3-4 months of the year, I can eat in restaurants 3-4 times a week, I can socialise with my friends whenever I choose. I can stay in a hotel with my Wife away from the kids for the night once every couple of weeks. I can follow my football team Home and Away every week.

For now whilst not at my target income I can still do things which contribute to my ideal days/months and years. I can get up at 6am every day and exercise, I can start to eat healthily, I can spend family time with my wife and children. My business now becomes a vehicle to enable me to enjoy the experiences listed above.

You will also notice none of the above experiences I listed are material possessions either. I've always wanted to travel in a private jet, have a house in Spain with a private swimming pool and own a Ferrari/Bentley/Rolls Royce etc but my experiences come first.

So maybe after saying all that I do have a life purpose - I love enjoying fantastic experiences with people closest to me.

I also believe experiences are most important. I was thinking about it the other day when I was contemplating investing in an online business. I figured, I’ve spent probably at least $100k traveling, and I have nothing physical to show for it. It was all experience, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything material. I learned a couple of languages, and that is something money can’t buy. I figured, what do I have to lose, I’ve already spent $100k with nothing physical to show for it. Even worst case scenario, if my business fails, I spent $5k on an experience, like I have many experiences before that, and I’ve come out fine with all this other money invested in experiences, what’s the worst that can happen? The risk is relatively small but the reward could be HUGE if it all works out. The only physical thing I’ve really invested a decent amount of money in is my Audi, but it doesn’t fulfill me as much as spending a year in Latin America did. I would take the experiences of traveling on $70k a year with all the free time I wanted any day over a mansion and cars but working 65 hours a week.

Excellent. On most things, I am the same.

Is this just since lockdown or in general?

When I'm on my death bed I know I won't be thinking I wish I sat on the couch more watching TV.
Once I'm financially secure it's a toss up between that ^^^ in my private TV room complete with personal chef.
Or
Fly first class to my favourite Asian cities, stay in top hotels & watch TV there.
What can I say, I have simple tastes, food, TV & I quite enjoy flying.
Currently I don't watch TV so maybe that's the draw & you can learn a lot from TV, even The Simpsons has taught me stuff.
Some days I've even just gone for a drive in my car for an hour or so to kill time.
I'd kill to drive my car more often & that's not just during lockdown. It's a working girl, so I'd shop as frequently as possible, for food of course! LOL
The store is my stock market, see a high quality bargain I go big & clear the shelf.
But I do drive the best kept secret in British motoring.
I shan't tell
what do you do for happiness outside of work?
There's an outside work?
Luckily I work from home so it's interspersed with dogs, food & daily household chores, including vacuuming, well, it is a power tool.

Does anyone think the Macuum cleaner ™ has potential to get the other 50% involved in this task?
If they were styled like supercars of course...
