It's very rare that I ask for help but today, I need your help. So, I sell used washers and dryers. I have someone that acquires them, repairs them, cleans them and sells them. Basically all I do nowadays is deliver them (this is the part I like to do and it keeps me busy). Anyway, I keep having people that want to give me a tip. The problem is that most of the time, they don't have a lot of money, yet they think I need a tip because they are kind hearted. They have no idea we are well off. My prices for washers and dryers are already the cheapest in the area because I don't need to make money for food on the table, I just do it to stay busy. So my question to you is..... should I take the tip or flat out tell them no. My problem is that I don't want to hurt their feelings or make them feel bad in any way. I've tried saying no but it seems to either make people kinda of mad or sad, depending on the person.

Have you thought about refusing politely, once.

Accepting it on the second time if they refuse you.

Then put it all in a jar and in December...cash it out and find how much your customers donated to your “fill in your favorite charity here”.

Either way, sounds like good problems to have.

take it and donate it ..... or mail it back with a note thanking them and explaining it to them

I would definitely not return it. That would likely offend them.

Accepting the money is the probably the best approach. What you do with it is up to you.

I like the suggestion to save the tips and then donate a washer/dryer to a family in need. You could then mail everyone who tipped you and let them know how their donation had helped someone?

I totally think you should take it. People feel good giving in this way. If you refuse you don't let them feel good. Perhaps you could say is not necesary, but definetly just take it and let them feel good.

What if you built it into the billable price? That way you set an amount you're comfortable with (even if it's fake and is just part of the normal cost). Then there is no expectation of a tip when you show up. I always enjoyed this in German restaurants. No question about how much to tip. I just pay what's on the bill.
