Yea, I got high over the weekend. Here's how:

1) The fountain in front of my home is broke; specifically, it is leaking. Since the fountain is very heavy, the repair would take a minimum 3 guys to move the fountain to diagnose and repair. Instead of calling a company for a repair, I am proud to say that I diagnosed and fixed the leak. THE FEELING OF ACCOMPLISHMENT AFTERWARD WAS LIKE A HIGH!

2) Before heading to the gym in the early AM, I was in my Lambo with the top down and able to take in the sunrise just peeking above a mountain range .... with the cool breeze in my face, some soft violins on the stereo, and a slow saunter down the empty road, I felt HIGH.

3) After spending ONE HOUR on the elliptical machine at the gym, the RUSH OF ENERGY and CLARITY I felt afterward was .... well ... like a HIGH ... and it LASTED ALL DAY.

4) I bought a garden bridge for my pool and it required assembly. When I pulled out the instructions I thought "Utt oh" -- complicated assembly instructions. I am terrible at assembling these things made in China. I have no patience. I'm not mechanical. I took a deep breathe and concluded that I will not let my past dictate my ability in the future. Instead of calling someone to assemble this bridge, I hunkered down and put it together myself on the first try and without issue. This was probably the first time I EVER put something together correctly without having to struggle. After my bridge was complete, I FELT HIGH!

Now ....

All these highs ....

Are naturally induced ....

And here is what I know, at least for me ...

If you told me that I could EXPERIENCE THESE SAME FEELINGS by the simple act of SMOKING WEED and I took that option, I DOUBT I would have done any of the above: No fountain repair, no exercise, no bridge assembly, no early morning drive -- why bother when SMOKING WEED gives me the easily obtained high.

Why spend an hour on the elliptical exerciser? I could just smoke weed.
Why take a 5AM drive on an empty road? I could just smoke weed.
Why fix the fountain yourself? Call someone and smoke weed instead.
Why put together that bridge? Pay the neighbor kid to do it and smoke weed.

So my options were:

A) Take the easy road, smoke weed and get high artificially and accomplish nothing naturally.

or

B) Take the hard road and create my own highs through natural mind-body connections.

My point: If I knew absolutely that these natural highs could be mimicked by the EZ road -- weed -- I would have done NONE of the above. Why bother to seek natural highs when I can just buy it and smoke it?

What was your high?

I ran 17 miles on Sunday with 6 miles of "pickups" at an accelerated pace. I was high out of my freaking mind. So high that I almost shot my whole day.

Eventually the high wore off and I had to mow the lawn. :smxB:

1) I went on a 6 mile run! One morning, in the not to distant past, I woke up as a middle aged frumpy woman. How this happened overnight, I have no idea, but it did. (ringing bell) So, I decided to do something to get my youthful, energetic self back. I'm training for a half marathon.

When I first started training, it was a struggle to make it a measly 2 or 3 miles. So, to make it 6 was awesome! It is so empowering to reach a milestone toward a goal that I have set for myself.

This exercise, of course also gives me so much more energy for life! I've got the energy to get out there and accomplish the goals I've set for myself.

2) We worked in the yard. Work? Gives you a high? Sure it does. When you accomplish something, it feels awesome. There is such a sense of satisfaction knowing you have made progress, made a contribution, and done something productive.

We finished building our house last year, but there are still several loose ends that need to be taken care of, including the landscaping. Our family and business obligations kept sending these items to the bottom of the list. This weekend, however we made the decision to get some of it done. So, we expanded the garden, planted some soft fruits, and spread seed for drout resistant grass and wild flowers. It felt like a high to finally get these things done. Our home will be so much more enjoyable with these things done…. Not to mention the fresh food we will enjoy from the garden this year!

My high is going to the gym for an hour to workout! I relax and refresh myself mentally there! And then the pump feels great a bit later ;)

Agree with you MJ:). Exercising is such a rewarding thing. It isn't always fun to get it started (some days are bad days), but you thank yourself many times over afterwards.

I did some exercise myself today and afterwards I took a long hot shower and then I crashed on the sofa, ate some cold blackberries with milk. Man, that is luxury. Luxury beyond words and all the money in the world.

I like the feeling in my feet afterwards. It's like you have recieved a long foot massage.

I am in heaven right now. I will sign off for today and just be lazy. Take care guys:).

Great for you, but I don't think we can honestly compare runner's high or the sense of accomplishment to what the weed high is like.

Example - I worked my a$$ off at the gym on friday - squats, deadlifts, presses - I went nuts and got the gym fairies (When there are lights in your eyes due to pressure) and the whole 9 ... felt great, I was exhausted, now I am sore days after and I feel good.

I then went to the Casino with friends and made good money playing roulette. The feelings of betting are INSANE, the high is stupendous - in fact I'd say sex drive and gambling drives are some of the highest on the list. So OK I was high as a kite in this regard when I won.

Then I spent the whole night out with friends eating great food, drinking and hanging out with girls.. again good.

But that isn't at all like all getting stoned with a few girls later in the night and just sitting and laughing for about 3 hours as one of our friends decided to do a solo 3 hour concert rapping and singing every song he heard of - without knowing the full lyrics.

So what my personal position is - different highs are great, accomplishment will always feel good - and smoking high has it's place. I do not advocate becoming a stoner and sitting at home staring at the wall daily. But once in awhile is fine.

Here is how to get high naturally...

Learn to live in the moment.

When you can master this, colors are more vibrant. Birds more amazing. Wind more magical. You see not only the thing but the space between the thing. You hear the music and you hear the silence behind the music.

Seeing the space, hearing the silence, getting lost in the vivid colors and the sounds around you can yield a high if you practice it long enough. You start to feel the space and life in your own body. Your body starts to feel light. You feel almost as if you could float away. Then, you literally feel the life flowing through your body. At first, it feels like a tingle, and it grows from there.

You probably won't feel this sensation when you first start practicing living in the moment, but if you practice and learn more about it, you will achieve a natural high.

I got a huge high yesterday when I sold my car. I owned it for 4 months and put 6k miles on it. I sold it for more than I bought it for and it sold in 8 days!:groove:

My high is getting up at 5:00am and driving 20 minutes to the beach to find a decent swell. (With surfing on the east coast of North Carolina you take what you get.) It is light out By the time I start to paddle out. Once I am out past the break I sit and watch the sun rise, there is not a better feeling to me when it is you and your buddy sharing a peak in the early morning hours. You can surf for a good 30 minutes to an hour or so until more people start showing up. The next thing you know it is 10:00am, the spot we were at is full and I about got hit 3 time by tourist on long boards and I say S%&! I forgot to pay the meter! <<<< lol That's when the buzz is gone! lol

Wow, you described it perfectly -- I got a chill just envisioning it ... the waves, the gulls, the sun, no people ... just you and an ocean. Awesome!

My high is breastfeeding my son. He forces me to stop what I'm doing and give my attention to him. I love watching him nurse and sometimes he will pat me or give me the biggest smile. I love knowing that all the weight he has put on is because of/from me. I carried him inside of me and even though he is no longer in my womb, I'm still giving life to him.

Breastfeeding was NOT easy for me and I wanted to quit and just go to formula. I am glad I did not just give up.

But when I nurse him, I have to give him my attention. I can't really multi-task. For me, it's just such a special moment between the two of us.

Get high off simply realizing how good you've got it. Try to remember as vivid as possible the days when it wasnt so great. Remember the stress, remeber the things you had to do (9-5, etc) and the things that you couldnt do. Sit back and realize it, whether its on a surfboard in the ocean alone or in the seat of a great car on an early morning drive alone, or any serene environment for that matter. Looking off into the mountains and stars at night where no one is around. Just think and you'll see... Afterwards, it becomes so hard to get mad or frustrated at any little thing

If in your mind, you havent "made it" yet, think of how amazing it would be to be exactly where you want whether its financially, spiritually, etc. The motivation to be found is amazing

Have you read the Celestine Prophecy? Great book. The whole premise is exactly what you just said! ...If you haven't read the book, I'll bring it for you when we go on the cruise. ;)

It's truly amazing how much your mindset has to do with how good you feel. Between the ages of 13-16 for some reason I had it in my mind I just wasn't as good as everyone else (in some way). That really did take a toll on happiness and experiencing these *highs* that everyone mentions from things you can do anyday.

Then around the age of 16 I started to bodybuild and suddenly my mindset changed. Instead of thinking of only negatives I started to look at the positive in everything, my situation didn't really change much, just my perspective. As I look on my view on life now, at 19, compared to only 6 years ago just being positive allows me to experience a lot more pleasure in things. In the past hearing the birds early in the morning was nothing more than just noise, but now there is beauty in it.

Now, I'm just going to speak for myself but I feel that now that I have found pleasure in everyday things artificial highs just aren't something I care for much anymore. I don't completely avoid them, but I only engage in it, at most a few times every 3 months because it just isn't necessary.

Also, nothing beats waking up before the sun rises and going for a nice easy run while the sun comes up and breathing in the fresh air!

I have read it! I really enjoyed the book, but didn't experience anything like it in my own life until I read and consciously practiced what was taught in The Power of Now.

And.... uh... nice cruise promo ;)

The Power of Now

From an email I recently wrote in my mastermind group... my lessons from reading this book:

We were talking about how to solve the problem of finding balance between working, working, working for a goal in the future and finding happiness and contentment today. For me, the answer to that dilemma is learning to live in the moment.

Saying "learn to live in the moment" is so easy to say - but hard to put into practice. Learning to Live in the Moment is a very deep and satisfying process, and it is really life changing when you grasp what it really means. It is a way of life and it is a process taken one little step at a time. You might have 5 seconds of "in the moment" on your first day. And during those 5 seconds, you might think.... well, that wasn't earth shattering. But the next day you might be able to get it done 3 or 4 or 5 moments during the day. In this time, you might feel a peace that you didn't feel the day before. And the next week, you will be able to do it for longer periods of time.... and during these times you will feel peace more deeply, and you will also feel an aliveness in your body that you did not feel before.

Living in the moment means learning to let go of the past and the future. Thinking about the past brings on resentment, anger, and sadness.
Thinking of the future brings on stress, anxiety, and a sense of discontent - if you believe the future will be better than today is.

So freedom from all these negative emotions is to stop thinking of both the past and the future. Instead - simply live in the moment... each and every one.

Living in the moment also means that you begin to appreciate and be in awe of everything around you. How did that rock come to be? Look at how green those leaves really are. Feel the comfort of the warm water on your hands as you wash dishes. Feel the air in your lungs with every breath.

Living in the moment also means that you are not your life situation. At first, this seems like just words - like a good concept. But as you learn to live in the moment each day and practice it more fully - you start to just know in your soul that this is true. Knowing it in your soul brings a happiness, peacefulness, and fulfillment that just reading it on the page and agreeing with it will never bring you.

There is a lot more to it. But, that gives you an idea. This is all from the book "The Power of Now"

At first - people - especially ambitious people will think that living in the now means that you are giving up your dreams and goals. That is not so. You can still pursue a dream or a goal - but you have come to realize that obtaining the goal is not better than the work you do in this moment as you strive for the goal. Is it like the saying "life is the journey - not the destination." Again - - - easy to say but another thing entirely to internalize that knowledge into your heart and your life. How do you actually live the journey instead of the destination? You do it by paying attention to this moment. Not 5 seconds ago. Not 5 seconds into the future. Not 5 years ago, and not 5 years into the future.

I hope this is helpful.

I havent had any real satisfying opportunities to step back and feel all those endorphines but I know for sure the day I Fire my employer will be one hell of a rush!

Back in my Glory days I would do "jungle runs" Running through parks over rough terrain. Sometimes finding motocross paths back in the woods. Or those H.I.T.(high intensity training) trails in the city parks. And do timed runs for up to two hours pushing myself to my limit.

My knees couldnt take that kind of punishment now but I still feel the thrill of just pushing my HR >200 BPM. Climbing steep grades on all fours and sprinting and hurdling over paths with downed trees from past hurricanes. Beating my times on a HIT trail. And this was in tempatures in the 90's with 100% humidity.

If only they had NInja warrior Game show back then. I would have been there for sure.

Damn man, interesting. Im 19 as well and I know EXACTLY what you are saying. Thats exactly how I am as well, same story and all. Everybody always wonders how I can be so happy about everything and I can find the good in pretty much ANY situation. Like you said, things so simple as the birds chirping and the stars mean so much more now.

Look at life as the glass is always half full, and keep giving it everything you've got... it'll get you somewhere

What was your high?

Today was a day full of Natural Highs. My own adrenaline. This entire day was full of positive thoughts and interactions. I had been reviewing, revising and celebrating my past, present, and future goals and accomplishments. Nothing gave me an extra 900 grams of adrenaline than a blacked out Murcielago flying past me and hearing that SCREAMING exhaust note only a few minutes ago. I told myself aloud in the car. " I know I will do it. There is nothing stopping me. I can I will."
What a way to top of the evening of a wonderful day!

Cheers Everyone!

Thanks for this thread. I'll be referring to this on occasion. As someone who has been addicted to weed on and off throughout my life reading MJ's post should keep me grounded if I were ever to feel a moment of weakness.

(I should mention that at this point in my life I'm doing good handling it, I don't smoke anymore).

You're absolutely right MJ and everyone. It's about living and experiencing, not seeking instant gratification.

My high is playing piano. I sit in front of the piano and grab the keys. Then I close my eyes and start playing. I don't really have to think about what I want to play. My brain creates a melody and my hands start play out my brains idea. Awesome feeling !

Great post!!!

The high of giving someone goosebumps with my music. That high takes me places weed can't.

The high of hearing one of my song in a club Saturday, and everyones dancing to it. Crazy.

The high of getting a $5,000 check and knowing it's only the 4th day of the month and more to come!

Watching my 9 yr old son BUST HIS a$$ on the basketball court the WHOLE GAME when his team only had 4 players against the #1 Team. He still cried when they lost by 30. AFter the game, watching all the opposing crowd & players walk up to him and shake his hand made me feel like wow.

Make up sex after a week long argument with my wife...(OK I'm getting carried away). lol.

i hit the gym 5 mornings a week and whether its resistance training with weights or cardio, I get that same high. You would think that busting you a$$ in the gym would make you tired for the rest of the day but the COMPLETE opposite is true. Your Energy levels just stay high all day.
