I remember that he recommends checking product sales as opposed to surveys because they are much more reliable, and I agree with him.

What I don't get is how he got access to that information before the internet was well established, especially when it comes to a wide variety of industries.

When I try to look for similar data today, I mostly run into market research firms with some very expensive reports that may or may not be helpful.

I don't care about PESTLE or Porter's five forces analysis or other academic theories. I want the numbers.

Does anyone know if the sources that Gary had are still available?
