Going Solo vs. Venture Capital

I know this isn't purely a web business topic, but I've been mulling over this for a couple of days. On the internet, speed is your friend. I've been pondering joining a mentorship program for web startups. There are several out there (they last around 3 months), YCombinatior, 500 Startups, TechStars.

My issue is the giving up of control. Obviously, if they give you monies, they want a portion. On the other hand, I feel deeply that my web service is a absolute NEED right now. I feel deeply passionate about seeing it to the marketplace. It's just a matter of how much more easily it would be done with resources and mentors who have been there and have advice to help you avoid the pitfalls that are out there.

I don't know of anyone specifically who has done such a thing on these forums, but what I'm seeking is an alternative perspective. Why would one choose to go at this one way versus the other?
