@Evil_Jester This is one of those things where you need to know yourself. Playing games as @Eskil mentions can be a great stress relief and source of fun, but as you know, some of us can take it too far and hurt our "process." I'm turning off the cable today because there's nothing I'd rather do than unwind on the couch watching Game of Thrones reruns. LOL. That hour could be better spent meditating or taking a nap or an extra hour in process.

Sometimes, just changing our typical patterns can help us to rewire our brains. Yesterday, when leaving work, I purposely walked down a hill instead of taking the staircase. Then I turned around and walked backwards for a few feet, just to push my brain into a different place for a moment. Sounds crazy, and probably is, XD, but getting leverage on yourself so YOU can drive your fastlane, instead of being driven by your old patterns is something to consider.

So if you feel that selling your game console could cause a big mental shift and open a void in how you use your time, it may be just what is needed.

The best lan party I had consisted of about 15 PC players, and we also had 2 XBOX connected with people playing Gears of War. I had maybe 30-40 people that night and everyone playing video games until 8am.

Ah, LAN parties.... they were a blast, and something I enjoyed very much in my younger years, lol. I used to go to The Gathering in Norway, one of the world's largest of its kind (5000-6000 people each year usually, started in 1992).

Shame Lan is dead and got replaced by console peasants.
Actually, Why has never anyone designed a console for more than 4 players and multiple HDMI ports for multiple screens.

Quieter but I wouldnt say dead. There are small lan parties in every area. Just all about hunting them down. Of course it hasn't helped that devs no longer make games with local server support so most lan parties end up consisting of older games.

A long time ago, it came out that Tobacco producers had altered their formulas to make cigarettes more addictive. They noticed less people were smoking. So they made it more addictive so those who did smoke would keep smoking and those who started would find it much harder to quit. Movies like "The INSIDERS" portray this problem.

But no one really talks about it with other things. I can't blame companies. You want to sell something that people can't get enough of. With video games they are highly addicting now and highly sophisticated. Most video games addicts (while they deny that there is such a thing, which there very clearly is) have some type of addiction which is a mix between gambling addiction and porn addiction. Gambling addiction due to RNG (randomness) of game boxes, loot, and even getting certain weapons. And porn addiction due to the dopamine rushes.

It's not good, harmless fun. It's designed to play on your mind and make you crave more and more and more. Bigger and better and more stream-lined. You crave that dopamine hit from killing a boss, winning a fight, or leveling up. And the more you play, the more addicted you get.

Only problem is, it's not real.

Ultimately while video games won't kill you, one must battle this addiction. Limit your time you play every day (say two hours). Then limit it to once every other day. Then once or twice a week. Then lower and lower. I'm of the firm belief now more than ever that life is not meant to be lived playing silly video games. Or as MJ said (paraphrasing), "killing Orcs in the latest dungeon of Doom." It's an activity that rarely if ever lends itself to a positive social and material outcomes. Uninstall it.

I believe this is going to become a huge problem in the future and that governments will have to regulate the industry.

Many of the knowledge we have comes from neuromarketing and guess what, in a couple of years VR headsets will come with eye trackers.

Imagine the situation, kids using gadgets that fool the brain to think the environment is real and that know what you're attracted to.

The games could modify their stimuli and in-game offers on the fly to accomodate the player's specific reactions and pace.

It would be like knowing how your body reacts to coke to maximize dosing and profit opportunity.

I have stopped playing games. Sold off all the game systems. I bought a raspberry pie, that a lot of favorite retro games. So, if I have a itch. I can play that.

What I do now, which I have done for a long time: Reading Comics. Love comic books.

Been addicted to games is a serious problem, especially if u are in mature age when u have much bigger responsibilities in your life then games. I played a lot of games in between 18-24. That's why my collage suffers in one hand. I literally quit overnight. It was just too much for me, and i am so grateful for that.

For you who are still into the games, just find something to occupy your day so you can focus on that thing instead of games or any other addiction you have. It really helps.

My first games console was a SEGA megadrive when i was 5 years old, i was so addicted to consoles throughout my childhood and teens i would forget to eat as i would play all day non stop.

Last year, after playing Battlefield 1 for many hours I decided I had to do something, as this addiction would destroy every dream i ever had. So, I packed my console away in the loft at my parents house. I haven't played a game in almost a year and things in my life have improved a lot.

I might treat myself if I hit my goals this year but I'm not really missing it at all.
it's an incredibly bad habit, good job you kicked it man!

I use them to destress. Ironically, when you have ADHD, stressful games help with focus and relaxation. I have no idea why or how, it just works.

I use them like most anything, as a tool and in moderation. Interestingly, I have noticed that I get bored after an hour, which is really interesting.

Earlier this year however, it was all I did out of fear of the world and everything happening. I had to seriously cut the habit quickly. Which I did.

Also, gravitating towards sims (ETS2/ATS/Cities Skylines/AirportCEO/SimAirport/Mudrunner) helps get some problem solving parts of the brain working.
