Hi All,
Maybe there is a post already about this, but I was wondering when you get weary of pursuing money, what other passions or hobbies does everyone have? We all cannot have money on the mind 24x7 can we?

For me Im a reader, love to read true crime/non fiction type books.

Professional Audio. I'm currently taking a diploma course as an audio recording engineer (the guy who sits in the booth and makes you sound good when you're singing/playing an instrument) .

That, and I make my own music.

Piano, Synth, Learning Guitar, etc.

Can I say sex? lol ... I'm kidding, the emotional aspect of any relationship is more important than the physical :iagree:

Let's see;

-Poker
-Politics
-Philanthropy
-School (ha almost never!)
-I love to read....I've started shifting from fiction to mostly non-fiction (I like magazines like Success, Driven (lifestyle), Bluff (poker), Poker Expert (in french), Maclean's (Political science and current events). I'm also reading fit for life, the 4hr. workweek, etc.
I end up reading too many magazines and books at the same time that I overwhelm myself hehe.

My activities when not doing business:

-reading books.
-fitness excercise.
-sex.
-do travels.
-experimenting with new ideas. These are pure fun, no money making involved in the equation. Just a curious sense for the unknown and what can happen if you mix stuff up.

We all cannot have money on the mind 24x7 can we?

I don't think I have money on my mind 24x7, but I'm always thinking about business. Even during simple things like driving home from school or watching a baseball game - I'm always thinking about opportunity.

It hasn't always been this bad, but since I've come to terms with having the funds and mentality for pulling the trigger on a start-up thats all I can think about. I just haven't found an idea that is feasible and allows for growth potential. I've had ideas that were slowlane but they were not worth betting the farm (my savings) on. I probably am putting too much pressure on myself and I've worked on this. But I've also realized that there's not alot of things that a 25 or 35 year old can do that I can't, so why wait until then? I'm starting now

I actually enjoy the game of money-chasing. That's a lot of what I think about in my free time, while I'm driving, flying, working-out, etc. It's kind of a hobby.

But other hobbies / interests include:

Travel - not just doing the travel in and of itself. I enjoy the whole process - especially the planning and maximizing points and promotions to get "Rockstar" type vacations for pennies on the dollar (OK, nickels on the dollar, maybe). Travel is by a large margin my favorite thing to do with extra time and money. Fave site: flyertalk.com

Polo - (the sport - not the clothing line) I've not played for 2 or 3 years, but I still love going to the barn and going to watch the games.

I agree 100%! My mind is always working; I love figuring out puzzles, and finding solutions. I find every aspect of business fascinating, and I suppose you could say that I eat, sleep, breathe and dream about solutions of every kind. However, my fascination with problem solving is not directly tied to money, money is just often a way to test the validity of my solution.

Pretty much all of my other hobbies involve problem solving or some element of design as well: crossword puzzles, card games/games of skill (poker, scrabble, chess), analyzing websites, learning, organizing, remodeling, cooking, writing and decorating. ...I'm not a huge movie person, as I have a hard time sitting still for hours on end, but when I do watch a good movie (I prefer inspiring or foreign films) I find myself more relaxed at the end of those 2 hours. In a nutshell is the creation/development process that I enjoy; the maintenance and management is what bores me to tears.

Having money on the mind constantly is not healthy as is having only one thing on your mind of any topic. This is called obsession. Money is one of the main tools in business and is required in most cases to calculate wealth which is what allows people to be free in most countries.

I can honestly say I usually don't have money on the mind more than an hour a day total, but I live, breath, eat business startups because it is my passion. I have evolved from just a Web Developer into a Business/ Startup Consultant by request of clients and friends. Money often comes into play for my clients sake.

Your question directly relates to why experienced Fastlaners always tell the younger members to do what they love rather than to work towards the goal of money. Doing what you love usually leads to money if you keep an open mind and don't consider wealth evil.

That said, in my off time (3-4 days a week) I spend it with my 3 year old daughter! When she is old enough I hope to talk her mother (my-ex) in letting me take her around the world. Of course, I have to buy the 205 ft. yacht first, but I think it is coming soon.

I used to have hobbies... not anymore really since startup 2.5 years ago. not its all business, not necessarily money though. I love racing, go to a lot of time attacks, road courses. Next year we will be involved heavily with Redline Time Attack series. We sponsor 3 cars involved in it, one of the cars won 1st place over all Modified FWD 2008. I cant really relax when i goto the races though, i'm always walking around talking to other team owners and drivers. next year it will be televised so that will be exciting.

As far as down time... cigars every once and ahwhile, going somewhere to eat and not having to worry about getting back to the office.... eating something other than spagetti-o's. Like going on long drives + short hikes when i get the chance. motorcycles when i get the chance etc.

Hobbies:

Baseball(I play in an adult league and unfortunately I'm a Cubs fan :smx4:)

Running(just finished the Chicago Marathon, wouldn't call myself more than a recreation runner though since I just started back in Feb)

Cars/Motorcycles(a huge moneypit that I hope will pay off from a startup/service biz I plan to pursue)

Travel(a 15hr roadtrip is just a warmup now add to it 2 Eurotrips in my young life)

Computers/Tech(by no means a hardcore techie, but for the time I spend on my Macbook and obsessing over new "toys", I should be figuring out ways to make money off of it :nono:)

plenty more to list... but these are what take up a majority of my time, I didn't list basketball/football, I used to play both and I guess still can, but watching someone else play it isn't quite as rewarding, not to mention all the time/effort I wasted in the last few yrs not only watching, but goin on message boards, namely the Cubs/Bulls boards to vent/discuss took away time that could've been spent productively and put me in the slowlane where I am currently working on breaking out of :fastlane:

after I reach the fastlane then it'll be about giving back and helping those who were once in my shoes, only then will I truly be wealthy!!!

this is one of the tips from this forum that is invaluable, I mean what's wrong with keeping an active mind and always thinking on how you can come up with the next big idea, no better time than while doing something else you enjoy!!!

Well I'm a bit of a speed freak...

I grew up racing mountain bikes and worked at a bicycle shop as a teenager. I don't race anymore but I still ride on a regular basis. I love being able to get away from any problems that are bugging me and focus on the trail I'm riding. I find being alone with just my bike in the outdoors very relaxing, whether I'm cruising or going for a hardcore cardio workout.

My biggest passion is cars. Working on them, detailing them, racing them, looking at them, learning about them etc. I've got an MR2 that I've been working on for the past 2 years and it should see 400whp soon. My goal has been to make a show quality race car that can be driven on the street. Once the car's 100% complete, I plan on taking some racing courses to make sure I'm able to drive it to its full potential. Next season I'd like to do as many Time Attack events as I can.

Other than that, I also enjoy going to the gym, photography, and even messing around on the guitar from time to time.

Jill - Could you share with the group some of your best tips / advice on how you accomplish this?

I, for one, would be extremely appreciative!

If you have enough information to share, maybe you could start a new thread.

Thanks!

I'd be happy to. In fact, I've considered making it the topic of my Beer & Pancakes presentation, if we are compelled to give one, even tho it isn't a business idea per se!

It would be hard to share with you all my tricks in one little message box, especially since everyone in the audience has different travel patterns.

In a nutshell, earn as many points and miles as you possibly can using promotions , many of which are not publicized. When you see me at Beer & Pancakes, ask me how I once got 600K airline points in one month.

. . . and credit cards. You can put almost every expense in your life on credit cards. I've purchased a car with a credit card, purchased business inventory, paid taxes, etc all using a credit card.

Gain "status" on at least one airline and one hotel property company, for free upgrades and gifts. This can be harder if you don't travel for business like my husband and I do. But it is possible. You have to keep your eyes open for promotions and take advantage of them. Typically easiest to get status on Priority Club, because it has the lowest spend threshold for a points-based qualification, without any required nights or stays. But Starwood properties has a pretty good promotion going right now (until the end of the year) that could yield top-tier status.

Try to travel in "shoulder seasons" for the best rates.

Finally, just ask. You never know what kind of upgrades, extras, discounts and freebies you can get by just asking.

I have pages of ideas, pointers and great vignettes in my head to further elaborate. But it would totally hijack the thread even more than it already has!

(Moderators, feel free to move this to its own thread if you wish.)

wow Jill, I thought I was a thrifty traveler, as for this being a thread jack, remember that most of us share that desire to travel(Besides chasing money...) so helping us make this easier is very relevant to this thread.

Personally, if I could cut out the hotel and airfare(I usually prefer to drive, but of course that's not possible when going abroad) portion I don't mind the food/entertainment costs.

In fact you and my mom would get along great, she's good at maximizing vacations and taking advantage of comps, which comes in handy for my parents' yearly trips to Vegas :coolgleamA:

I find a lot of value in spending time with friends and family. I also focus a lot in self-formation, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

When it comes down to having fun and relieving stress, if I'm not in the gym, then it is SPEED AND HORSEPOWER. Sport bikes are probably my biggest material passion. Riding is a form of meditation for me and puts me in a state of euphoria. Dropping a knee to the ground while floating the front wheel out of a corner is a natural high that no man-made drug can provide you with. Next would have to be cars and boats.

I also enjoy photography, and am getting into videography also. I am going to school for it and I hope to have some sweet short films in production in a few years.

When I have the time and money, traveling. One of my dreams is to travel with a group of my closest friends in Europe and Asia.

All work and no play is no fun at all...

I'm a member of a Mercedes club and enjoy talking and working on Mercedes. I also enjoy the meets, where we talk about Mercedes and drink amazing beer.:smx6:

Sailing and boats are my passion. I look forward to the point in my life when I can just tell the world to go screw itself and become a boat bum. At this point I must be content with a little yacht club racing.

I think at least I have to many hobbies. I enjoy skiing, shooting, camping, fishing, WW2, reading(usualy have 3-4 books going at once) and anime/manga. I'd like to get into auto racing a bit, and maybe even give flying a try.

Like all proper sailors I drink like a fish, and enjoy a good cigar. Nothing like sitting on the fantail after a race win enjoying a good scotch and cigar.

Yeah, FYM (F*ck You Money or FYW, F*ck You Wealth). From Mark Cuban, the expressive guy:).

Many people forget that they need to have that FYM or FYW attitude already when they are broke. You need to set boundaries for how much shit you want to take from people. Including customers. The customers are not always right and they never have the right to take advantage of you (many do and many businesspeople just "take it"). So grow that attitude and live that attitude right now and you will have your boat and your boat bum life in 6 months or maybe less.

It's a way of life. Not something you become when you have the dough. Remember the BE-DO-HAVE. You need to have the attitude of a rich and free minded human being before you can be free materially.

I don't like what Hitler did at all, but you can never say he was a wussy. And you can never say he didn't believe in his stuff (he was fanatical in fact). I have read almost all of Mein Kampf (so to have my own view on the piece) and he reiterates one main thing through the whole book:

Winners never do half-measured things. Winners are never afraid of deciding and acting and winners never behave like others have the right to run all over them. And last but not least: Winners strengthen themselfs bodily and mentally everyday to face reality in order to win the game. Whatever that game is.

The point: Harden yourself, get a financial picture of your boat bum lifestyle, find something to sell, set a high price and only sell to customers that appreciate your stuff. Never sell to whiners. They are no good anyway (they are more trouble than they are worth). Harsh attitude, but that is how you make the money. Post a thread when you live the lifestyle of your choice. Should we set a preliminary deadline of 2 months:)?

I have 15-20 years of hard work before I can afford to live the life style of my choice. However in 2 months if I can get a house sold, buy another deal, and finish this semester of school strong I'll be pretty happy.

15-20 years? Why such a long time to get what you want?

Have you calculated how much your lifestyle would cost you? I mean in detail.

Yes, but I want to build a business and travel first. I enjoy working.

Eventualy I'd like to get to the point where I can take 3-6 months off a year to travel, and sail. But thats probably at least 10 years down the road.
