I am currently in the process of developing an iPhone app and am having difficulty on deciding how to monetize the app. Does anyone here have experience with ad networks like iad or revmob?
My app is a flashcard studying app with content already uploaded for the users to study their selected topic. The current plan is to set the price for each flash card deck to $0.99 for the user to add to their library. My potential user base can be from 1,000 to 100,000 users. I project that it will land anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 if I use IAP's. But I also project approximately $10 to $25 of IAP from each user within their first year. They will need to purchase about 10-20 more dollars worth of content every 6-12 months, maxing out at a total of approximately $100 total from each customer.
If I make the app free I feel that I can get a good grasp on my niche's community and be the primary studying resource. Between Apple and Android I feel that I can have 50,000 active users. An estimation would be about 10,000 users using the app daily for about 10 minutes. I would have a full page screen ad when they open up the app. A banner ad while they study that refreshes every 30 seconds (is that a decent refresh rate?), and a rewards ad from Kiip after every 100 cards studied. That's approximately 200,000 to 220,000 page impressions. With a fill rate of 60% it's about 120,000 impressions a day. With an eCPM of a low $1.00, that's still $120.00 a day with lots of potential to grow from that baseline, especially around exam time.
If I can achieve 10,000 users using my app for 10 minutes a day, is $120.00 a day a reasonable estimation? I've never dealt with app ads before. I know it's impossible to have a true estimation, but is it within reason? I'm at a fork in the road where I need to tell my developer how to implement the monetization. I would like to make my product free for my niche. Nothing like it is free at the moment. If adverts are a good option with this model, I would rather go with adverts over IAP's, but I know that I would get money for my app from my users with IAP's. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
