This year I had a breakthrough how to think about diet. It can be summarized in 3 steps.
1) Eat enough calories for your activity level.
2) Eat enough of each necessary nutrient.
3) Limit the harmful nutrients / harmful quantities.
That's it. If you are not eating enough food, you will not feel good no matter your diet because the body will not be able to function. It's just physics.
If you are not eating enough of a certain nutrient (including protein, iron, vitamin D given your sun exposure, etc.), you will not feel good no matter what your diet is, because the body will not be able to function. It's just biology. The reason may vary, for example, fiber indirectly helps the digestive system to function well.
Finally, high quantities of certain nutrients are known to be harmful -- certain fats increasing cholesterol, fish having mercury, canned soups having too much sodium, etc. (The harmful amounts are relative to your needs: for example, people exercising in the heat may need more sodium.) Eating too much overall also falls into this category. A preference for foods with a low glycemic index can also be viewed as reducing the amount of added sugars.
