Hey everyone,
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the Commandment of Control and the critical importance of building our own database (emails and phone numbers) so we don’t rely on the whims of the algorithm on Meta, YouTube, or TikTok.
However, there’s a problem with the traditional advertising strategy. The direct route is usually extremely cold: you run an ad to completely cold traffic, send them straight to a landing page, and immediately demand their email to download something. Sure, you get sign-ups, but half of them leave fake emails, the other half won't even remember who you are three days later, and your open rates end up in the gutter because there is no trust.
To avoid that friction and build a high-quality list, I've been applying a system based on Robert Cialdini's Law of Reciprocity, and I wanted to share the breakdown in case it helps anyone here:
1. Paid traffic to attract, not to demand
Instead of running aggressive ads asking for an email right off the bat, I use advertising to amplify my best educational videos. The goal of the ad isn't to sell or capture data at second zero, but to introduce myself to my target niche by solving a very specific pain point right on their screen.
2. Delivering real value on my profile (The Reciprocity Phase)
The ad sends the user to my Instagram profile. Instead of landing on a static sales page, they arrive at a living ecosystem of free tips, advice, and practical solutions.
This is where Cialdini comes in: by giving them selfless value and immediate solutions they can apply right away, I eliminate their skepticism. People think: "If they're giving me this for free in their videos, what they have behind the scenes must be amazing." You generate gratitude and authority before asking for anything in return.
3. The natural CTA at the end of the video
Once the person has watched the video, verified that the content actually helps them, and realizes I know what I'm talking about, I drop the call to action (CTA) at the end of the content or in the caption:
"If you want the step-by-step template / the tool / the full PDF to implement this in 5 minutes, leave a comment or hit the link in my bio to download it for free on my website."
4. Capture on my website (Transfer of ownership)
The user goes to my website by choice and with enthusiasm, not because of the pressure from a pushy ad. They hand over their email happily because they already know who I am, recognize my face and voice, and respect the quality of my work.
The Result:
You use Instagram strictly for what it is: a marketing channel and a filtering tool. You warm up cold traffic with massive value and then transfer the truly interested people from a leased platform into your private asset (your email list).
The emails that come through this route have significantly higher open rates, and converting them into sales later on is infinitely easier because the relationship has already been built.
Is anyone else using this hybrid approach, or do you prefer going straight from ads to a landing page?
