Hi everyone,
my name is Pietro, I'm 19 years old and I come from a small city in Northern Italy.

I don't know what I really like, I have a lot of passions, but I'd say that the biggest one is to learn things about every kind of stuff. I've learned English, almost all by myself, in order to be able to communicate with people from all around the world.
Last year I finished high school. My parents really want me to start college. So I spent the last years struggling to choose the best university for me. It was a really hard choice, but at the end I subscribed to a business and economics university in a city near mine. I think it's interesting because all the lectures, exams etc are in English, and it's more focused on international business.
I'll study there, but I'm not doing it only to gain the graduate title, I'll do it to learn how to manage a business, which will be my personal one.

The branchs of things which I like the most are travel, video making, cinema, art, books, food, sailing and fashion. I really love Italy, I think that it's the most beautiful country in the world (sorry) and I'd like to make something to improve how people from other countries see us. Maybe something about turism here or a "Made in Italy" clothes brand which sells online.

I've never known what I want to do when I'll grow up. When I was younger, I was panicing when I was thinking about having a 9-5 job which I don't enjoy, and not being able to actually enjoy life. I was sure that it was the only path existing. I thought that, as soon as I started working, I would have never been able to be happy again.
So I started surfing the internet, looking for other ways to live, and I found out about Shoe Dog, by Phil Knight. I was amazed. After this book I started to read biography of successfull people and books about entrepeneurship and business. I spend most of my free time on learning about these things on internet.

I just finished to read The Millionaire Fastlane, and I feel like something changed inside of me. It's definetly the best business book I've read so far. I subscribed to this forum to find like-minded people.

My goal for the next year are to:
  • Start devolop a new skill which I can use in my entrepeneurial journey, while I study at university. (I still have to figure out which one to choose)
  • Travel a lot and make experiences as soon as covid ends
  • Learn German
  • Decide which kind of business I wanna start
  • Find a mentor
  • Subscibe to a public speaking course
I read a few articles on this forum and it really looks like a gold mine.

I wish the best to everyone who reads this, especially to @MJ DeMarco

Pietro

Lovely story!
And your plans sound really great and amazing that you learned English all by yourself. I was only wondering if college is the right choice for you. I think you're so motivated, maybe it's better if you try to learn how to start a business while working a part-time job and saving some money to start your business with. However, I totally understand that it isn't easy with strict parents, who want you to go to college. My parents also wanted me to go to college/university (sorry in Switzerland, where I live the system is a little different). And it was really hard to say no, but I think in the end it was the right decision. Hope you have an amazing time in college and come up with a great business plan.
Cheers

Hi Pietro,
Just in a few words, I'd like to underline that MJ is mostly criticising American studies which have an insanely high price for only leading to the slow lane.
I'd say enjoy european studies, even try an Erasmus (after covid). It'll widen your sight, create a lot of bonds, and some of these new contacts might as well be of great help throughout your journey.
European public studies are cheap and should offer you plenty of time to work on your personal development projects, use this as a chance to set the foundations of what you'll want to build.
Good luck

Hi Mick,
Thank you really much for your advice! I'm now starting to think about Erasmus. Do you have any suggestions about which country to choose?

Hi Mick,
Thank you really much for your advice! I'm now starting to think about Erasmus. Do you have any suggestions about which country to choose?
I'd say that depends on what you're looking for, and what budget you currently have.
Back then I had 0 budget, perhaps 2k€ on my account, and you must know that the financial support from the program can take a semester or so to get to you, will depend on your university, their budget, the number of candidates, etc...
So my university had partnerships with Valencia, Göteborg, and Prague: My spanish isn't bad, but (I was told that) you need to be nearly fluent for studying there, Göteborg was too expensive, and Prague is an amazing city (history, architecture, fluency in English, etc...), and I started dating a czech girl shortly before that, so the choice was quite obvious in the end...

My advices for you (take what helps, throw the rest ;) )
1) Have a look at your university (you need(ed?) to be at least at Bachelor level for this, so it'll depend on the faculty you choose), and ask them what program they have, and what partnerships.
2) Check the prerequisites like the language (I learnt Czech in the process, but I'm merely intermediate now, being fluent in EN was enough), the expenses (start saving asap to fully enjoy the experience and travel in the process, I believe that's a hell of a good investment on yourself), the campus size, accomodation, etc... I was living in a dorm, stuck with another dude 60% of the year in about 10m²... Quite tough but constructive in that you learn also a lot there, and exchange with all kinds of profiles (and it was cheap as hell, allowing to enjoy even more the whole experience).
3) Make your plans: Prepare a budget for activities you want to do "NOW" (bungee jump? simply travel? trying extreme sports? CZ was a cheap country after a summer job in Lux, check what fits your means/needs).
4) Start developing your business ideas: in some fields the programs were very poor and they just want the Erasmus budget, no matter your results --> use that time to set your ideas, as you'll be probably safe from studying. I had many mandatory classes, but no regret either, I learnt a precious load of things there that will serve for my project, which leads to:
5) Find your balance: this is a chance we can have in Europe, with consequent financial help, so use it to live and discover yourself, while learning in some classes what can boost your projects, start making your choices there and I'm sure it will define the kind of person you want to be, and the kind of business you want to start.

I know all doesn't sound like heading to the fast lane at all, but I have no slice of regret for having lived all this, and this life experience also forge your vision of the world and the possibilities, that's where I think it's a great personal investment :)

Study in South Tyrol, you'll learn german like that if you want. Also open some business there, from what I know taxes are lower over there, right?

Ciao Pietro, Federico here..

if you are already thinking about Erasmus (and you should, it's my biggest regret about University), I would suggest some countries where you can think about living/working/start a business.
Maybe.. Germany, Belgium (for the german language) or Denmark/Sweden (for the money/business)?

Also, a good tip (I think) regarding University: focus on passing the exams and get the degree, since most of the courses are useless, and use the remaining time travelling and making connections in the Erasmus student group (ESN) and Aegee group (I was there, it's an international student group but more focused on culture, trainings and a bit less on parties). use these groups and the university to connect with other students that share your same interests, they can be precious resources for your development and businesses.

P.S. Now that I am reading again your goals, take a serious look at Aegee group: they put a lot of effort in soft skills and you can make some good experiences to insert in your curriculum (like, becoming treasurer or president of the group of your university), and you can travel A LOT with them paying nothing (like, 300€ maximum for 2weeks in the summer.. but sleeping on the floor of a gym :) but that's an experience, my experiences with them literally changed my life for the best).

Hope it helps,
Federico from Viareggio and Hungary

Grazie Federico, I didn't know those groups. I'll definitely check them out
