I knew it! Secret plan to get rid of extroverts!

As a web designer, I have been unknowingly been preparing for the last few years

- work from home and isolate :check:

- no human contact with anyone :check:

- eat from your house :check:

- prepare to be indoors from the next few months :check:

Introverts have a good head start on this lol.

I keep reading about herd immunity here. But it's not even sure that's possible, because it's a novel virus. People seem to get reinfected, and reinfection could be even worse. Also, there are already two different strains confirmed, that people can get.

I think finding a cure will be our only way out. Otherwise this could be the new normal. Maybe people will stay at home and plug themselves in the Matrix voluntarily...

I was watching a Bulgarian (lol) podcast about this, and one of the guys mentioned how right now there are thousands of viruses with the potential to wipe out the human race, lurking in forests, underwater, within different animals. They just haven't had the chance to reach us yet.

It also mentioned the Spanish flu and how it was so deadly because it killed people with strong immune systems (basically, the opposite of this). If it appeared in 2020, it would obliterate us.

This whole thing is scary because it reminds us that we're not untouchable. Humans could die out easily, and everything we've built, all our history... will have existed for nothing.

BJ's in Jacksonville, FL on Phillips HWY as of 3/12/2020. Sold out of hand sanitizer. I got the last package of COTTENELLE toilet paper (thank GOD). But there were still several pallets of CHARMIN available. Large signs saying limit of 2 packages per purchase. I overhead one couple, "go get another cart and you go through a different check out lane so we can get 4 packages."

Other cleaning products were still available but clearly lower inventory levels than normal.

A manager told me they had a line waiting when they opened the store. He estimated 150 people waiting to get in.

I think it's poor writing. For context, here's the full paragraph:

"Amazon said it’s encouraging all employees who can work from home to do so to enable greater social distancing and lessen the impacts on public transportation. The directive applies to all employees whose work requires them to be in an office, store, fulfillment center or in vehicles making deliveries."

So:

1. Amazon is "encouraging," not requiring.
2. This is for employees who *can* work from home, not those who can't.

I think you are right. I cannot imagine Amazon voluntarily stopping it’s operations now. If anything, eCommerce along with remote working will be rapidly growing now. It’s much better that one guy goes around making deliveries (as long as he/she is healthy) than having people go to the stores.

People keep attributing the rush for supplies to panic. I don't think panic has started yet, at least not in the U.S. Right now it is FOMO. When supplies run out people will panic.

Here in Philippines where I am visiting they took it up a notch today. My local market had a device to touch your forehead and see your temperature instantly right at the entrance then they give you a shot of hand sanitizer after...I guess for your hands and the forehead that just touched so many other heads ha.

It is a travesty in the USA that I am reading. A damn Travesty. The person leading is most likely infected (4 proven instances of contact with currently quarantined people) and will not take a test. Test what test?

This seems like effective advertising for a service that benefits people during quarantine. These longer-term, more-than-a-trend type of businesses that complement our brave new world are the type of businesses we Fastlaners should be pondering for the future. What other needs do people need fulfilled now and in the future if more people and companies begin to work from home?

How to manage remote teams.
I went to a conference in Bali in 2018 called running remote which was dedicated to practices for improving running remote teams. I think it's going to be a booming industry lol (even more so - although there was a bit of discussion about it being behind where many estimated it to be).

The problem I am looking at is 1/2 months down the line...

Let's say we are all under quarantine and numbers are steady/dropping - you still can't end the quarantine. The numbers would only jump back up again. It is a stalemate.
Well hopefully by then we’ll have something else in place - like rapid testing and we can quarantine only those who need it.

I would say over the next month we will see this play out in places like Italy

I’ve been looking at South Korea and China as possible models of what happens when this is over. They’ve largely lifted quarantines.

I think finding a cure will be our only way out. Otherwise this could be the new normal. Maybe people will stay at home and plug themselves in the Matrix voluntarily...

Yep, this puppy is going to be seasonal from now on until we have a vaccine which they’re thinking about 18 months.

Some of these headlines are insane. They’re almost implying “go out and catch this bad boy so we can avoid people catching it...”

There’s a better way to build ‘herd immunity’ and it’s called ‘wait for a vaccine’

When there is a cost effective vaccine or cure, if there ever is one, it will be a pharmaceutical company that comes up with it.

...Quoting my younger self.

“Here is an update on the progress of several major companies, in their search for a cure.”

Don’t get your hopes up though; because I was right about the government too. Despite one company’s efforts to bring this to market quickly, trials won’t conclude until June of 2021.

Profit motives solve problems. Governments create them.

I'm starting to agree that the best option is to just continue being careful (washing hands etc, just generally not being disgusting) and let ourselves get the virus rather than quarantining. Quarantine will work for a month then cases will shoot up again. We can't just stew at home for months on end. It's inevitable that it's gonna spread more.

At least my holiday destinations might be less packed this year. Thanks corona!!

I had forgotten how brutal that is. I remember bawling my eyes out when the doctor told me the 3 spots on my stomach were chicken pox, thankfully that was the extent of the whole thing. Eat your oranges, kids!

I don't know about the US government, but those steps are usually in place for a reason. And that reason being that even though it could work to cure the disease, you have to find out what and how severe the side effects are.

With the Swine flu (H1N1) a Vaccine called Pandemrix was used in here in Finland. One of the side effects was higher amounts of narcolepsy in children along with some other lesser occurring side effects (like miscarriage). The use was still considered somewhat of a net positive, but it did raise the point that vaccines that are not thoroughly tested could have life changing negative consequences.

Also, I would be very wary of pharmaceutical companies in general. A lot of the drugs that do make it on the market don't give you a vastly better net result than a placebo (net effect being intended effect minus side effects).

I have an app in the health and fitness space and I'm seeing a lot of fitness apps advertising their programs as a way to work out from home when the gym is closed. Lots of food apps creating "immunity-boosting" recipes.

Smart and helpful and positive. Love it.

Only thing popped into my head so far was some type of fashionable Sanitizer or 70% alcohol dispenser accessory. Maybe a Spider Man type wrist shooter? :)

I want to share somethings about vaccines, because I think that a lot of people are putting somewhat false hope out there for people. We have tried to fast track vaccines before such as Ebola, we still don’t have an Ebola vaccine. It’s super unpredictable.

I keep hearing 18 months until we have a vaccine. 18 months is how long it might take if all the stars align correctly and the process goes right. at least there are lots of companies working in this which greatly increases the probability something will make its way out quickly.

actually creating a candidate vaccine takes almost no time at all, literally days or weeks. Testing it is where all the time comes in.

The problem with vaccines is proving them both effective and safe. Effective is pretty self explanatory. Safe however is tricky. Some vaccines have actually created a situation where people got sicker if infected after vaccination. The ones that come to mind were a tuberculosis vaccine and a dengue fever vaccine.

a small percentage of people who had received the vaccine actually had a big immune over response when they later became infected.

figuring this out Takes time. Time to see people who are in phase 1 initial trials, if they are infected, how they respond. Make sure it’s providing protection. Make sure people aren’t having problems because of the vaccine.

Then you move on to phase 2 testing and expand the number of people who get the vaccine. After phase 2, the repeat this again with an even larger population for phase 3 testing.

You can’t rush the process, getting vaccine, waiting for the vaccine to take effect (usually months), maybe intentionally infecting people (honestly I don’t know if they intentionally infect or not), wait and see if the vaccine prevents sickness, see if it's safe. This is a multi month process.

this is why it is so tricky and time consuming. I personally would be very surprised if we had a vaccine that quickly.

the most likely way this plays out is the following. Lots of people get infected. I’m going to be blunt, it’s inevitable this is going to spread widely, the cat is totally out of the bag here. As more and more people recover, all those who survive now have immunity to the disease.

As we discussed in a prior post, for the pandemic to taper off R0 has to fall below 1. If say 1/2 the population has been infected and recovered producing immunity, then there are only 50% of the population susceptible. R0 goes down because of this. The higher the percentage immune the less the virus can expand in the future. R0 falls below 1, and the pandemic slowly winds to a close.

this all assumes however, that another strain doesn’t rear its head that people previously exposed to are not immune to.

Ha! That reminded me about the strange cleaning rituals I'm witnessing at the gym these days. People coating their entire upper body with hand sanitizer after every single set.

It's probably safe to assume that Pres Trump has CV, the Brazilian President just tested positive and Trump met with him days ago, the full gambit of handshakes, photos, etc. It could be fake news out of Brazil being syndicated by the US Media, but, it is being reported.

And now an unscheduled press conference today will be held (by Pres Trump) at 3PM ET, my guess is he might reveal he's been tested and positive, or not positive.

Seeing that all these world leaders and public figures are getting positives, it's clear this thing is more virulent than the common flu.

Trudeau's wife tested positive and they're both self isolating for 14 days.

actually, if you become infected you no longer quarantine for 14 days. You quarantine until recovered. This is reported to be 5 weeks on average. Ideally you quarantine until you receive 2 negative tests. Trudeau’s wife testing positive means they are in for a much longer quarantine.

the news reporting they will quarantine for 14 days is not accurate, and shows they have no idea what’s going on.

14 day quarantine is if you had an exposure or suspected exposure and develop no symptoms, then after 14 days you can go play in the sandbox until your next exposure and quarantine.

EDIT: actually once testing is widely available, the quarantine period could be greatly reduced. A negative test after some period of time post exposure would serve the same purpose. The question is how long you have to wait after an exposure to get a reliable negative test.

When I heard Trudeau and his wife were quarantining for 14 days, I actually assumed they almost certainly were infected, and just wanted time to work on a game plan before they announced it. He is a world leader and there is no reason for him to quarantine past a few days required for a test to become positive. Once he tested negative he would no longer quarantine, unless he just wanted a 2 week vacation.
