I have really bad knees. I started to take 500mg turmeric capsules about a month ago. It is really hard to determine if something is working when it comes to things like shitty knees, but I feel like they have been much better as of late.

I take one with a meal, 2-3 times a day. I will continue to do so for the time being.

I eat turmeric foods almost every day. If you have inflammation in your knees - it will help.

If you want a better dose - buy the root and add it to a protein juice or shake. It works wonders.

Great idea for a thread. What I currently take shouldn't be taken as what I'll always take...

Everyday I take a min of 720 mg of Omega-3.
Everyday I take a min of 3g of Absorbic Acid powder.
I'm mostly off of working out for the summer, I supplement creatine when I'm more active.
Currently looking for the right mix for Magnesium (I take some form every day), I've begun mixing magnesium carbonate with absorbic acid, this seems to be good but I'm not decided.
As of this week, I'm taking mk-7 every other day because my calcium intake is really high.
Every night I take a lot of melotonin, but I'm still refining my bedtime regimen.
I take Vitamin B-12 as needed (if I feel groggy, tired, etc) and this was my GO TO choice when pulling all night poker sessions back in those days, caffeine had nothing on Vitamin B.

I started on Omega-3 a few years ago when I suddenly became intolerant of nuts and seeds of every type. I surmised that my Omega-6 to 3 ratio got out of whack and I began to supplement. This intolerance seems to have abated, this could be from ceasing those foods mostly or through supplementing or both. Either way, there's a clear benefit to continuing.

Vitamin C is, in my opinion, the king of supplements. Do a little research on it, it's easy since it's perhaps the most studied and used of them all... the summary is that humans (and guinea pigs) have a mutated gene that normally makes abscorbate in the body. All other mammals make their own using glucose (my theory is this gene mutated and allowed us to starve better). When those mammals make their own (which is all the time) their blood ratios are off the charts compared to our RDA standards. My 3g per day is nothing compared to what is observed in the animal kingdom. I personally believe that this mutation has caused humans to become chronically under nourished in vitamin C, and therefore is a tangential cause for countless illnesses and diseases - and if my belief is correct, it would explain the obscene results that have been documented over the last several decades of high dose vitamin C use.

Anyway - I'm always looking to learn more and will read through everyone's comments in here in the past and future.

TIA!!

Been in various stores today comparing vitamins, fish oil etc.

There are massive price differences.

Is this down to marketing costs, % of dosage for each vitamin or is there a difference in quality?

Any tips or advice would be appreciated

Omega oil has a significant different in quality, depending on the source. As far as others, I have no idea.

That's it. I do prefer flaxseed since there is no after taste ever, although it seems fish oil is more effective. Used to take ginko biloba as well as creatine, but now I lean towards simplicity.

The only supplements I take at the moment:
  • Cod liver oil (if I haven't had beef liver in over a week)
  • Vitamin D (unless I spend a couple hours in a sunny climate)

At 80 years of age I am still alive! The remarkable thing about that is that at various times, due to lifelong chronic illness I have received prognoses of early death.

There were two turning points:
1. At age 30, near death, my life was saved by fasting under the guidance of an excellent naturopath. Water for seven days, followed by 2 days diluted fruit juice, then 2 days of slow introduction to whole food. At the conclusion of that process, for the first time in my life I knew what it felt like to be well.
2. At age 45 I learned about Orthomolecular Medicine. As a result, I have for 35 years been taking more supplements than most people could imagine.

I recommend at least browsing this site DoctorYourself.com: Andrew Saul's Natural Health Website by a brilliant Orthomolecular Physician.

Final note: Most vitamin and mineral supplements are far too weak to be a lot of use. Most notably "Mega" multi vitamins, but it applies to a wide range of supplements. The reason is that they are based on the RDA. RDA's in most cases are way too low to maintain good health.

Used to take many years ago, now I don't take any regularly at all. Actual studies from non-biased institutions have correlated several long term supplement use with negative side effects. There is one effect they do give though, which is one of the most proven effects in medicine and is called "placebo". Our biology is very very complex and not yet fully understood, and a lot of the assumptions people have about vitamins doesn't hold much ground. And the argument "we need to increase our intake of chemical x 10000% because the western diet is bad!!1" always sounded like horoscope-tier to me, please tell what direction of diet should we emulate since the western is so bad then lol

Studies from Harvard don't find any proof fish oil prevents heart problems, antioxidant supplements seem to actually increase cancer, and probiotics can disrupt normal flora which can give brain fogginess.

Do vitamins and supplements work? Two decades of studies say no

The Dark Side of Antioxidants

Probiotic use is a Link Between Brain Fogginess and Severe Bloating

Such a stupid and dangerous thing to say. We simply don't know much about its long term use in detail to say anything for certain.

Vitamin D: Finding a balance - Harvard Health Blog

Not saying supplements are bad as they have benefit to some people, but even water is dangerous if you megadose it. Regularly consuming huge doses of anything for months or years without any proven need for it seems kind of thoughtless
BRAVO! So many people, including myself, have been guilty of taking supplements based on scant science, or worse, anecdotal evidence, or worse still, pseudoscience. I'm not taking shots at anyone here, but I've been reading many of the contributions to this thread and few people (not all) are taking their supplements based on any measurable need, and their perceived benefits seem to be mostly anecdotal. I'm not saying supplements aren't warranted in certain circumstances (extreme examples being vit C for scurvy and vit D for rickets), but there's a ton of BS and waste in this arena. I guess that's what makes it such a fruitful hunting ground for marketers.

The more I learn, the more I realize that Grandma had it right: Everything in moderation.

By the way, haven't meta-analyses shown that the placebo effect is as high as 25% on average - and that's even in randomized, double-blind studies? Does that sound about right?

is it because of your diet? Or did you injure yourself and your knees got bad?

Tumeric helps a lot you can increase the amounts...but you want to also not eat fulls that lead to inflammation such as a lot of diary, sweets, heavily processed foods, etc....if your eat a lot of junk then taking Tumeric will only attempt to cleanse you from your diet instead of work solely on healing your body.....also try intermittent fasting then try to fast once a week....

The supplements I take:

*Fish oil 1000mg softgels Kirkland (3-4 daily)
*LIFE FORCE multi (the best multi there is for the price just try it)

Other than this I maintain a healthy diet which consists of fruits, vegetables, eggs and meats. I eat in moderation and only when I'm actually hungry. If I'm not hungry. I don't eat.

Nothing. It’s all a scam.

Can't help but wonder if all these supplements like "pre-workout" or "post-workout" and other "teching" powders are actually just the placebo effect in action lol

Hey Kak,

i have no experiences with fish-oil but i'm taking in 20g of flaxseeds and sesame seeds every day for omega 3 & 6 with no noticeable effects.

I also take B12 1.000IU every 2-3 days, which where a major game changer. It felt like i've been behind a wall of fog all day before, compared to after taking it for 1 week. You feel more awake and all tasks throughout the day just come easier. Just my experiences. This wears off after you've taken if for while though - or it's just the new standard who knows.

Best to inject it rather than take it orally.

Of course it is!

The only noticeable ingredient is caffeine.

This is so true. All pre workouts is bullshit. If you want to get hyped, order cafieine tabs way cheaper and you dont pay for the packaging and the athletes commission.

Creatine can be beneficial, is worth to try considering its really cheap (just buy creatine monohydrate, no fancy shit blends or something) and if you're into building muscle. Whey protein can help reach your protein goals, but not necessary.

Whey protein I don’t really consider a supplement as it’s food.

I used to take creatine when I was bulking up as a teenager, not sure if it helped. But I guess it seems like anything helps when you’re making gains because you’re in that positive mindset, you’ll believe anything.

The only pre-workout I take now is Redline. That shit is enough.

If you want to get rid of fish oils( because they are expensive) eat cod liver. Here in Holland its way cheaper, if you want to get the same amount of benefits that are in €2 cod liver you spent 20€ fish oil pills.

The best supplement depends on individuals. Some may need more vitamin d3 or calcium if he or she lives in a cold area where difficult to get sunlight.

The best thing is to get the blood test done first and take the necessary supplements. Personally, I tested a lot of supplements last year. Found out that multivitamins are a waste of money. Intermitted fasting and cleanse supplement really works.

FYI, some supplement may work for you but may not work for somebody else.

I second you on Life force. Indeed the best for the price.
NOW fish oil
Citicoline

The latter two because I suspect deficiencies, the first for 'insurance' as I'm hitting the weights hard these days.

I am sorry but it is silly to say that ALL supplements are a scam. Yes, a lot of it is but there are plenty of studies showing that quality supplements for people that need them can vastly increase quality of life and health. Based on the different diets around the world, most people are deficient in some kind of nutrient such as Westerners being deficient in Magnesium.

To answer the question, I take B Vitamin supplement, Magnesium, and Fish Oil.

Please make sure you buy supplements from sources that have independent testing done on them to ensure they arent loaded with crap or even harmful.

Yeah but taking them everyday is ludicrous. You’re body only needs a few doses if it is seriously depleted.

Plus, most of these bottles have an insane amount of mg of each vitamin; way over the amount the body can actually absorb.

Taking them everyday is just a product of clever marketing, you’re better off just eating healthy.

Back when I was involved in all this stuff, we used to have a saying:

If it works, it's illegal.

Still good advice far as I can tell.

Multivitamin, probiotic, and krill oil. For those that take fish oil, take a look into krill oil. Has much better bioavailability.

After seeing so many speculative posts in this thread I would as a moderately fit and healthy 83 year old like to suggest viewing this thread:

I also take a gulp of Apple Cider Vinegar every day. Tastes like crap, but it does wonders to keep you from ever feeling bloated.
I’ve been doing the same since about the time you made this post! It’s a great thing for your gut. I don’t do it year round 7 days a week, but a few times a week for sure.

This thread needs to be updated. There is so much awesome stuff out there.

I recently started taking ashwagandha and I have noticed A CLEAR difference in my life.

I am married to a batshit crazy Latina. If anyone has watched Modern Family they will know that Gloria IS NOT an exaggeration lol, if anything she is pretty calm and level headed. I mostly jest, I love my wife.

So being the rational thinker that I am, and the emotional roller coaster that is my wife, she likes to get into crazy arguments with me that literally last hours. I would eventually get fed up with the BS, get mad, and then she would be upset that I was mad and it would spiral down from there. I had a clock of like 30 minutes of rambling before I had enough. It literally takes my wife up to TWO HOURS to get this out of her system and calm down at times.

Not too long after taking Ashwagandha I started to notice that the level of being essentially yelled at would increase. It kind of just rolls off me now, whereas before I would start to feel my temper rising. I have nothing else that can point to this other than Ashwagandha, and I plan on taking it for the foreseeable future since it is so cheap. $20 for like 3ish months of having stress roll off me that would set me off before? YES PLEASE!!
