Welp, it was a matter of time, but in my line of business I was bound to get bent over the barrel eventually.

Was placed on a new consulting contract that requires I'm on call 24/7 for "mission related" incidents (I'm a consultant). Currently reporting to a former military general who likes to exercise his hellfire level of control on anyone in his immediate periphery. Most of my tasks have gone from strategic to brute force admin processing, with no sense of accomplishment or intellectual engagement.

So..

One of two things will likely happen. I will start a business, or I'll kill myself. I've been debating the later for some time now. So if I stop posting, you'll know why. Those of you who still have a chance not to F*ck up your life, take mine as an example; don't do consulting.

- Cheers

Well don’t kill yourself, that’s the only way to lose the game. Starting a business is a much better option.

And if/when it fails, then adjust and keep going. There are always options and things to try and work at. Except when you kill yourself, then there are no options.

Don’t take life so seriously.

How does the idea of taking your savings, quitting this job and go stay on a beach in Thailad for a month? Get clear on what kind of life you want for yourself mate.

Is it doable in your situation? Can you imagine yourself on a beach formulating a new strategy to achieve your goals?

That sounds Utopian. Unfortunately, I'm one of the many who don't have the financial grounding to take such a risk. I am trying to calm myself down and look at my situation objectively; trying to see what pain points I can solve in what market niches. Copywriting / market publications is showing long-term promise, but is not immediately scalable. I need to be more mentally tough, for sure, especially in the short-term.

Consulting is rough. I was in public accounting/auditing and it's not much different. I've been brainstorming how to create an audit firm that can boast work-life balance but alas, the only value there is to the employee and not the client.

Consulting experience is highly valued within industry, however. Can you parlay your experience into a job that gives you the flexibility to lead a normal life while you build a business on the side?

What kind of consulting do you do?

Yea, and the agony is augmented because I have depression. I've been doing operations improvement and human resource strategy for about 3 years. Until two months ago it was at least tolerable, but yea I've been putting in 12 hour days. I have the knowledge to do a lot of different things, but barely have time to interview somewhere during working hours.

However, you raise a good point; the need for work life balance can no longer be ignored. The industry has always been this way, and as you said the client only cares about speed. I understand the need for speed (o god) to keep up with competitive forces, but the havoc speed reeks on most involved is totally brutal. I've been thinking that a business to help consultants "escape" into other fields would be valuable. But first I need to figure out the best way to do that myself before I pretend I can help anyone else do it..

I had an idea for some type of forum or service called "Life After Big 4" for recovering auditors

I'm obviously not sure if your exact situation, but surely you can take an afternoon off once in a while for an interview? Don't you have PTO?

Unless he gets too use to the beach life, n quiet pace and can't get back to so called reality lol Then he has to figure out how to get out of the habit of chilling out all the time hehe Least he would be alive n well! Your idea does sound relaxing I might add :) Prosperous and thinking smart continues. If you can I would highly at least recommend a vacation just to breath, I think depression may happen if one is not happy in their environment it's a wake up call to make a change. Just my opinion
