If You Drop Out of College, Please Learn These Skills ASAP

1. How to deal with conflict (you only deal with people for the rest of your life, every day)

2. What money is, how it works, how to make it, (and not by selling it at wholesale wal-mart prices in a terrible job market)

3. The fundamentals of relationships and communication. Really, they need you to memorize 180 countries, but cant suggest a 4 day class, on basics in human interaction, relationships, managing expectations, and how to deal with disappointment?

4. Fundamental emotional interactions, control, and exposure.

Even college graduates need to learn that stuff ASAP.

Once you have a complete understanding of yourself, your moods, your behaviour, your actions.

Then will you understand people well? Is that what you are trying to say? @IceCreamKid.

Hmmm this is a difficult one to answer. This might sound kinda crazy, but I think I understand people more than I understand myself in a lot of situations because over the years I've trained my brain to always focus on the needs and feelings of others rather than my own.

I don't have a full understanding of why I operate the way I do. I conditioned myself to ignore the negative little voice inside and take action anyway because I got tired of the many years of being a wantrepreneur. I learned more in 1 year of DOING than many years of READING. I'm still definitely a work in progress of figuring out my inner peace, but am glad to say that I'm at least at the point where my emotions don't paralyze me. My current business probably would've died back in February if I wasn't equipped to deal with the emotions.

Just do your best to think with clarity and commit 100% because 99% is PAINFUL. When you're committing 100% there's no more hesitation because you simply made the choice that the tasks at hand MUST be done. Things somehow come more easily when you're committed at 100%.

If you wish to understand the pains of others well, the #1 thing you have to learn is how to ask really good questions. When you become a good listener, the solutions to the problems magically appear.

Completely with you here. I always give better advice to others than myself. Best thing to do is flip the script. Write yourself a letter or email from someone you really care about who 'happens to have the same challenges'. The advice you give will be higher quality than if you just let your head spin on whatever it is you're dealing with.

The Newbie Thought Process:
1. Where can I make money? What can I sell?

The Dolphin Thought Process:
1. Where is the pile of traffic?
2. What do I need to do to get in front of that traffic?
3. What does it cost to get in front of that traffic?
4. Now that I know traffic costs, THEN I ask what product does the traffic want.
5. What is the cost for the product to get it to them?
6. After I got the product to them, what ELSE do they want? Then TEST and find out.

We're not here to make a quick buck off a quick sale. We're here to BUILD a BRAND to hopefully get to the liquidation event.

By golly, all of us can get the ice cream if only we learn to master the fork and spoon!

@IceCreamKid @zen******* - whats the way to find this "traffic" (regardless of any market) to then go and get in front of it? I am currently looking into starting on ebay to get my feet wet - reselling some products - however I don't want to be doing it for too long but want to establish a fastlane business out of it - I want to get the premise correct first to then be able to transition into "BUILD a BRAND" AT LEAST! if not "to hopefully get to the liquidation event".

I want to begin with the right step taking into account the above as the big picture - to then be relentless and pursue it long term. I know that If I don't start this way and then just peddle products looking for things to sell I will just be "hustling" and will get bored of it. I really need to build a business as I can't rely on a job.

How do I start the research process so that I can set myself up to do exactly the above later on down the line? There's a great thread here: https://www.thefastlaneforum.com/community/threads/importing-wholesaling-for-resale-on-ebay.51843/

However I have asked this question but I don't think I am getting "it" across - I basically want to do what Sophia Amoruso has done with Nasty Gal - her ebay business which she turned into a $100 million business by transitioning from ebay selling vintage items - to setting up her own ecommerce store and blowing up.

Lol I knew @zen******* you would come out with something really obvious like that.

What about the other question? About building a brand off ebay but starting with the correct premise? Please shed some light on that too...If you was to start by importing and reselling at the beginning but you want to turn into a brandable business as you would like to open your own ecom store how you would start on ebay differently? Instead of just hustling and buying and selling whatever you can of value at a cheaper price.

Please answer this question.

The Newbie Thought Process:
1. Where can I make money? What can I sell?

This is your current location on a map ^^

The Dolphin Thought Process:
1. Where is the pile of traffic?
2. What do I need to do to get in front of that traffic?
3. What does it cost to get in front of that traffic?
4. Now that I know traffic costs, THEN I ask what product does the traffic want.

These are the destinations that you want to arrive at. ^^

The shortest story ever written

Once upon a few days ago , Bboy got extremely lucky , and came a crossed a mysterious kid - a kid who himself was lost at one point, and was also once given the directions to find these same destinations. The mysterious kid remembered what it was like to be in Beibers shoes and offered his guidance. But there was a problem. Babyboo didn't understand the mysterious kid. The mysterious kid spoke french! Bboooya didn't understand french. The detour of learning French seemed too long for Bbwhooo. He wants to get to his destinations NOW! . So Babyroo sets off to find a easier solution.

Bbob then gets eaten by a dragon and dies -- the end.

YOU want this!
whats the way to find this "traffic" (regardless of any market) to then go and get in front of it?

YOU don't want this!
however I don't want to be doing it for too long but want to establish a fastlane business out of it

YOU want this!
I want to get the premise correct first to then be able to transition into "BUILD a BRAND" AT LEAST!

YOU want this!
I want to begin with the right step taking into account the above as the big picture - to then be relentless and pursue it long term
ugh , i said this same clueless bullshit , and it wasn't even that long ago:facepalm: Here's the secret potion bro. Talk to you again in 10 minutes, when you are at your next problem.

Hilariously your already thinking about this!
I basically want to do what Sophia Amoruso

You -you- you , i want- i want- i want- i want.

I see that you have a 'read the millionaire fast lane' badge. Bullshit. Either you didn't read it - or you didn't understand it. Doesn't matter. Your Response to Ice-Cream kid screams the thought process of a newbie. MJ will break this down for you , if you will listen. Learn French!

Or just go start your company! That's fine too. You have made it clear you know what you want!

You may be on the inside of this forum , and be given the time of day from great minds, But as great as they all are - they can't ever save you from yourself.

How To Get New Business Ideas Every Day Within Minutes!

I swear every time I listen to the Dolphin talk, I learn to just shut up and absorb whatever comes out of his mouth. EVERY TIME. He calls them mini-MBA's.

Anyway, here is something that he mentioned to me tonight that I somehow missed. Pretty neat trick for anybody who can't seem to find a need/pain. This seems much quicker than my process of picking up the phone and talking to business owners about what problems they are experiencing.

He discovered this trick in 1989 when I was a 3-year old ice creamer.

Years ago, I used to take a newspaper, and open it randomly, (as long as it wasnt ads.) and would challenge my friends to see the business opportunities on every page. most couldn't.
But as i trained my own sense of Need, i would see one in almost any article.

New leash law enacted by city council? how bout a dog walking company.

Bids needed for new road through city? how bout a consulting gig to a local contractor, with a payment only if they get the job, based on a %?

New Animal Shelter is out of funds? how about a animal product launch, using local radio stations, in event style marketing, with you getting a share of the revenues generated, by adoption fees? paid on the back end?

some of these could never be fast lane businesses. however they could provide funds that could be rolled into a fastlane biz

as your "ear" for needs develop, you begin to bring other elements into play, like scale or magnitude. accelerating your business. sooner or later you can listen to the rails as in the old west, knowing ahead of anyone else, when a freight train of opportunity is coming your way.

Thanks for the repost of this. Always good to refresh and hear it again. I was a true ice creamer at age 3 in 1989 as well as my father owned a dairy queen back then, haha.

ICECREAMKID, I CRIED AFTER READING YOUR POSTS.

I used to brag that I was an entrepreneur. And say it to my family, friends and everyone.

The only thing I did is to send emails, talk with partners about all the money we are going to make, design and improve a new logo, a business plan and everything that was not directly involved in getting costumers. All I did was to take passive action.

F*ck, that was hard.

I had to accept that I wasn’t an entrepreneur. I am a WANTREPRENEUR. I cried. I lied on my bed and I continued crying.

It didn’t hurt the fact that I was a wantrepreneur, it can be changed in one morning. It hurts when you see that your life is fake, that you are not the man you think you are. It hurts when you see all the time wasted that it’s not going to come back never again. One of the best and most important years of my live. This is tough.

I have made 0 SALES and I have 0 INCOME after almost ONE YEAR. I can tell you a lot of excuses and whys, but the fact is the fact. I live with my parents and they paid me everything.

My dead lines were absurd and stupid, most of them were about waiting for something or someone and without an end date. I am perfectionist and it was stopping me, you cannot wait until everything is perfect, do it good or ok and move forward, you will have time to improve things. Also the fear of facing what is the REAL thing I have to do right now to move forward. I am looking for the big contract instead of starting for the first client.

I didn’t love people. In fact I HATED people. I don’t understand why they behave the way they behave, it don’t make sense to me. Instead of loving them unconditionally and having compassion for them, I hated them. They don’t know what they don’t know, probably most of them may had a bad childhood, bad parents or maybe they had bad luck. LOVE them and HELP them, it’s not their fault.

After crying and accepting the reality I felt better. Then I felt angry and with new energies. My eyes were wet again, but this time of anger and passion, I saw the light, I saw the image of true entrepreneur. My unconscious patterns are conscious, I released the breaks, I know what I have to do and and I am going to do it.

I accomplished more in the last 2 weeks that in the whole year.

I didn’t understand why the human brain of high level people was wired to help others disinterestedly. I thought they opened a door for new competition. But now I think I see it. When they do it, they are unconsciously harboring the seeds of an army of soldiers willing to help them in the future. You can bet IceCreamKid that if you need help in the future you just have to pm me and I will do all I can to help you.

You KICKED my a$$. I LOVE you man. If you didn’t take all the hours from your live for writing your posts probably I would be still stuck in my own rat trap. YOU have given a new direction to my life and this is priceless.

I would not be fair to not mention MJ in this post, because he was the first one to kick my a$$ and provide this PURE gold forum. And to zen******* for mentoring IceCreamKid and a lot of more guys.
HONESTLY AND FROM THE DEEP OF MY SOUL AND HEART, THANK YOU ICECREAM. THANK YOU zen*******. THANK YOU MJ. I LOVE YOU GUYS.

I've been there man. Basically I would get so worked up thinking about the "event" that I would actually convince myself I had already made it big and I was rolling in cash. This could not be further from the truth. However after you get past this stage productivity starts to increase more and more as you start to actually learn more.
Keep grinding!

Great quote there.

When you help people in a disinterested way, you create something that makes the world richer and then benefit eventually makes its way back to you (through living in a richer world).

The mystery of sacrifice is that there is no sacrifice.

I had to accept that I wasn’t an entrepreneur. I am a WANTREPRENEUR. I cried. I lied on my bed and I continued crying.

Don't cry bro! I was a wantrepreneur for 5 years hahah! You cannot skip from 18 year old clueless guy to 50 year old zen master without the 32 years of struggle in between. You must walk through the confusion. You must get burned. You must get frustrated. Accept this and you will be skipping along to the ice cream shop with two scoops of ice cream in each hand.

I hated people at one point in my life too. Had money stolen from me, friendships/relationships betray me, relatives stole my identity and opened up a bunch of credit cards, I just couldn't figure out why people would do wrong to me when I had done nothing but help them. Then one day the ice cream gods smiled upon me from the sky and dropped rainbow colored sprinkles of wisdom onto my brain with an enlightening truth:

Everyone is lovable. Even the angry folks, who are just really hurt. Even the upset, who are just really frustrated. Even the insecure, who are really just unsure.

With this knowledge, I was able to free myself of all the negative energy and business somehow became easier since I had more peace in my life. A negative attitude towards others can never bring one long term success.

When you show customers that you have their best interest at heart and you're not just a selfish cold money taker, they take care of you in return. Same applies to your business partners, your investors, your friends, and your lover.

I just realised a new level of the icecream attitude;
We don't change our customers behaviours, we change our own.

You are never rejected, because YOU can always change. And the anger, the bitterness, and all that stuff, comes from feeling like the world is so cruel that you don't want to anymore. So you horde all your gifts to yourself.

You have to open up, to change your behaviours, so that you change customers smiles.

Grimaldo, thank you for sharing this. That paradigm shift is everything. Sometimes you need to knock down the tower of your incorrect thinking and start rebuilding anew. I'm the same process...it's a very emotional ride. Because this is our dream, to build a business, find financial freedom, and finally see our fondest dreams come true. But if you really want it, you will find things along the way that aren't really pleasant. You'll be forced to look at yourself and how you think. You'll be forced to unearth and rearrange old patterns. You'll be forced to admit that you don't have it all figured out after all...and you'll have the task of doing things you've been avoiding for years. So eventually it becomes about much more than making money. It's about transforming your mind so that you see the world differently, and then you must contribute to the world in a positive way. The money is the result of successfully changing your mindset, and then contributing successfully.

I'm really happy you shared this. Thanks for being so open. I wish you all the best from here on out.

We're not here to make a quick buck off a quick sale. We're here to BUILD a BRAND to hopefully get to the liquidation event.

@IceCreamKid and @zen******* ....this actually makes a lot of sense on the surface. Although I am always wondering if I read too much into 'business' or if it really is as simple as finding where a huge amount of people have an interest, then looking for a unique way to insert your newly branded product/service. I sense the gent in this article did something along those lines (btw not promoting, just an article I saw someone else had linked today)
http://www.secretentourage.com/success-stories/jonathan-petrillo/

Did he look and say wow the cosmetics/cosmeceuticals industry is huge. Why can't I build a brand in amongst it? I will promote through different channels, have a slight twist to my products and then give it a shot.

I have recently been looking into a niche where there are huge amounts of repeat traffic...babies. Hugely competitive (same as above) but surely enough room to try branding my own...organic babies pyjamas, or organic babies care products, or even my own brand of stroller etc etc.

Sorry if this is completely newbie but I look at existing brands and honestly think, what makes them so special, other than marketing? I know the process of executing that brand is huge, but am I over thinking by thinking that to be successful I need to solve some new problem or could it be as simple as competing for a piece of an already large need (ie. care for my baby etc), by marketing just slightly differently. I am an Australian, so theoretically I could market a brand as the first Australian designed baby product range (only an example)..

Please rip me a new one if my naivety astounds and shocks!

As always thanks for all the value you provide.

In its basic form it is that easy! That being said, the process is where the real work comes in. For instance I know that people would make me filthy rich if I I made an all electric car that could go for 10000km without a charge. The problem is the process of developing a new battery technology is immense. So as a bullet point plan it seems easy, but in reality it is a huge task

I would get so worked up thinking about the "event" that I would actually convince myself I had already made it big and I was rolling in cash

There is research out there that talking about success to others and all the things you are doing in preparation triggers the same physical reactions in your brain that actually achieving the desired result does - thereby lessening the actual desire to complete the goal

I was actually talking to one of the guppies about this EXACT problem. I told him that my posts could potentially ruin a bunch of lives because I write in a style that causes the reader to feel incredibly inspired, but leaves them not knowing what to do next. They end up feeling like THEY accomplished something even though the reality is that they only read my posts which caused them to feel really good.

It's sort of like when you watch a bunch of guys watching sports on TV. When their team wins they start yelling, "YEAAA WE DID IT MAN! WE WON! YEAAAAA". Pshh all they did was watch TV in the living room eating potato chips on the couch. They didn't go through the pain and process that is required to win.

My next few posts on here are going to be focused on step-by-step plans for how to start businesses with very little money, zero contacts, and zero knowledge. Yes, the seemingly impossible is actually possible lol...but only if you be creative like a child.

All of your questions can be answered by taking action. I am serious, my brother.

You don't need to solve some kind of brand new problem. I can't remember where I learned this, but the dolphin said that the 1st movers into a new niche typically die while the 2nd movers are the ones who make the killing. This is because the 2nd movers analyze everything that the 1st movers did incorrectly. The 2nd movers end up executing more effectively.

ICK,

This is so so true. I've felt the rush of adrenalin after reading some inspiring posts. After I read them I stop being productive and go out for lunch or waste time watching YouTube videos, you know, because I "accomplished" my goals in my head.

Great insight!

Steve
