I have always been curious about the income possible from YouTube videos. My son watches them to see how to get past the next level of Mario etc. and I have noticed there are lots of these type that have millions of views and some play and advert beforehand.

Are people making good money from these? How exactly does the advertising work? Do you have to try and sell it yourself or will you be approached once you have a certain number of views? Do you get the money or does YouTube?

I see the viral type videos of somebody falling over etc. and they have many, many views and always wondered how much realistically you could make.

I understand you are inexperienced on Youtube advertising, but why don't you upload a video and try to monetize it. I'm doing something similar to what you talking about.

The thing is first your video gets on youtube and once you choose to monetize it , they check for the eligibility and start posting relevant ads on your video. It can be the ads before the video or the ones that come up as the video is playing. Good money or not is difficult to know but I know for sure that PSY made millions of dollars from his gangam style video's youtube ads. No you don't have to sell the ads, but you have to promote your video like crazy to get few hundred views. Once you get the views and subscribers, its all about sustaining them.

I think if you can build up a big enough channel following and produce regular quality vids there could be some money in it. But to get all your vids to go viral everytime is not going to happen.

I would say putting a link to your blog/website and using your vids to push traffic to your site and sell people stuff there would be better.

The simple answer is yes, you most definitely can earn money on YouTube.

I have videos that I made in 2008 that still pay me about $100/every other month. It's not a lot but hey, I don't do anything for it. Pretty cool.

If you google "how much do youtubers make" you'll come across this:

Not sure how accurate it is but long story short, you can most definitely make money off of YouTube.

The trick here (just like any other business venture) is figuring out what you can put out there that people want to see.

Some examples are:

How to
Pop Culture Stuff
Discussions on stuff for a particular niche (like discussions on different type of protein for the fitness niche. You could even promote a website with affiliate links for the different products...)
silly viral stuff
pranks

and of course, the list goes on...

Good luck and have some fun with it.

CelebrityNetWorth says their source is http://socialblade.com, and SocialBlade's stats on various Youtubers is interesting.

One guy I follow is AngryJoeShow who regularly gets 500k views on 20 minute videos. He seems to scrape by making a living, and is really trying recently to make it a business. He spent some money getting his community set up with a web site. And is currently facing DMCA "ContentID" blocks on his ability to make money on the prerolls for a number of his videos. The guy works super hard on his channel. I think he said 70 hours a week once.

His ability to make money could disappear completely if YouTube automatically determines he is in copyright violation three times. And it seems that (I am not a lawyer) it's clear he is in the right by reviewing games, under freedom of the press. Other channels seem to not get hit as hard as him because they have "managed" partnership status with YouTube.

So for someone with very few views to start reviewing or "lets playing" games, YouTube is a currently a tough business.

Watch for my upcoming progress thread. Like most things, building to a high view count is lucky if it happens once, but making it repeatable requires a methodical and calculated approach. The only other thing I want to add at this point is that Youtube itself is not a great way to make money. However, it can be leveraged for access to great ways to make money.
