1. That success is for "OTHER" people, go to school, spend a shit ton of money on tuition, get a safe job, buy a house etc. you know the whole story.

2. That things cannot change, whatever that may be.

3. That success and happiness are somehow beyond my self-concept.

Biggest lie: "Knowledge is power".

Reality: "Relevant and applied knowledge is power".

LOL. Another bullshit cliche quote is: "It's not what you know its who you know".

Really? Like what I have to offer in terms of intellect is garbage and irrelevant? :smilielol:

The reality is that it just depends, but most its BOTH what you know and who.

You are special/talented/going to be great.

Took years until finally someone finished the sentence. " if you apply those talents through hard work."

Also,

"everyone hates their jobs."

That money makes you evil and corrupt.

That finding a career in the corporate world is the way to retire rich.

Being rich young is only for those who are handed the money from rich parents.

"You will not succeed in this country without an education."-Dad (engineer and retired from Chevron after 30+ years, he has focal dystonia from breaking his back for this company.)

I can't wait to introduce him to another world and accomplish it without a college degree.

When we moved to El paso my parents chased the money and opened a restaurant and a ball room, the two businesses failed. My parents almost lost the house. It grew a lot of fear in me, But now when I read the fastlane I learned a lot from their mistakes.

Rich people are all smart; that's how they got rich.

I can't possibly become wealthy because I'm not smart enough (if I were I'd be rich by now).

If my wack-a-doodle ideas were any good, then someone smarter than me would have already succeeded at doing it.

The wackiest ideas are some of the most profitable! Take for instance Silly Bands for kids (shaped like animals and whatnot)... took youth by storm in one summer and made a fortune... and all they did was create the concept by "imaging" the wristbands with anything and everything they could. Just made me stop and think that day, that there are a LOT of ingenious and Mcguiver-esk ways to make the craziest, Multi-million dollar products from the simplest idea. This could also relate to the virtual world as well. I monetized the craziest facebook pages (just as an example) you wouldn't think COULD be monetized, with an innovative way to make it happen... and they all still profit today and have been for a year and half! Just wanted to share some hope, don't knock your ideas no matter how "Wack" you think they are! :)

1 - My schooling is the key to my future
2 - Women love nice guys
3 - Without a degree i am nothing
4 - People with degrees are automatically entitled to larger paycheck
5 - you need to have a degree to start a business
6 - 18-20 something year olds shouldn't focus on starting or creating a business but rather getting drunk, chasing women and partying
7 - pop culure is much more important than learning how to better yourself
8 - the dream of owning a business and profting more than your parents is a pipe dream
9 - "dude..that sounds like such a pipe dream"
10 - friends/family/girfriend/boyfriend will always support you no matter what
11 - its impossible to make real money online

"YOU WILL NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING!!"

Funny thing was, he came back around and asked to borrow 10 grand so he could keep his house...

I learned the value of forgiveness and gave him the money...

wow.

Its amazing to see all the junk that clutters up the mind.

I have forgotten a lot of the fears of my youth. and the things i used to believe like that.

its refreshing to read what still exists, as if it were real, for some folks.

one that I can still remember vaguely was something along the lines of something something, bad stuff, no money, something something.

well its close.

Its really amazing the changes over time.

losing fear is my favorite thing to have ever lost.

Have to say this entire thread is awesome and overall a great idea. Zen great post as always but I have to challenge you on the last part.... As a male I'd rank virginity as #1 loss :p a little fear here and there keeps life interesting when I overcome it

There's no such thing as get rich quick.

or

Get rich quick is a scam.
(If that was true, then under-30 millionaires and under 40-billionaires wouldn't exist.)

Two of the biggest lies I believed a few years ago.

That we have no control over what life gives us and that most conditions we face are random or assigned by "fate".

That wealth is based on "luck".

Gosh, so many. It's difficult to choose the biggest one, but the most harmful for me have been:

* That I was born to be poor, uneducated, and that the highlight of my life would be my wedding day.

* That "safety and security" meant a corporate or government job

* That starting my own business was the single most risky and dangerous thing I could do.
