For those of you guys trying to hustle up some cash in local services, NextDoor is a great venue (at least here in the USA).

I found this post there, screenshotted below. Check out the demand.

Basically, this guy rented an aerating machine from HomeDepot, lined up projects all day, and will end up with a hefty profit.

The machine rents for $109.

I'm sure this guy 10X his profit from one day of work, likely $80+/hour, depending on charges for larger lot sizes.

And yet without the right mindset or knowledge it looks as the opportunity is unrealized on him. Nothing should stop him from renting it another day, collecting more leads and continuing the journey.

I'm betting one could do this for one month straight and earn more than most people make in an average median salary, and then FIRE the other 11 months in a trailer. ;)

Maybe he is.

Maybe this is a marketing ploy deliberately enforcing scarcity in the local market... This way when he does post people will take action instead of thinking "I'll just reply tomorrow".

You’d think. We get about a few hundred calls for this stuff.

Don’t want it. I have a business to run.

Am I going to hire, train, be liable for and manage 20 people for 3 weeks and then fire them?

All the aerators get rented out, maybe I find one or two. Only some employees can get one “sorry guys no work until Thursday go home no pay for you”.

So then I have to buy them. Now I have a ton of aerators I have to buy at a couple grand a pop, just to sit all year and through the winter and then need the carbs cleaned out in spring.

Every single call is a one time job. Spend a bunch of time playing phone tag with a 60 year old lady who wants to pay cash just for a one time thing that has a 40% chance of catching a complaint since the random dude I hired 7 hours ago didn’t do a great job *surprised face emoji*

We don’t even offer this publicly for customers as part of their regular service because now it takes our efficient and full schedule and adds 30% more work at once for everyone. Then I have the same staffing issue as before.

We took away the dethatching and aerating and didn’t change our prices and still get as many signups and much less headaches.

This is a perfect example of a business owner who truly understands the fundamentals of his business.

How many new guys would think to themselves, "Oh, yeah, a way to make more $. Let's goooo".

That simply means your service isn't for us and we wouldn't hire you -- we consider landscape management complete care to keep the grounds manicured and magazine worthy, not just lawnmowing and once a year fertilizer. Everyone around here likely thinks the same since the properties aren't small starter homes. So in my buying evaluation, this would constitute a negative skew, or a lack of a feature, like wanting a car with heated seats. I realize that my property is likely not your target market so the rational you explain above is perfectly rational.

yes 99% of the time we wouldn't take on properties like yours since we make way more money from small ones and it's much more scalable but for you we wouldn't be offering our typical thing.

We break our own rules for some friends/family every now and then just because it's easy to make a couple of exceptions for people we know. It's when you do it for 600 people that it becomes trouble.

I'm sure Bret would be happy to just come say hi lol.

But yes typically this is our target customer for the majority of cases. And the amount of homes like this keeps skyrocketing each year.

Another simple "hustle" that could muster up some capital...

Tools need; templates, paint, payment options, a middle-to-upper class neighborhood, and hard work.

I would recommend a brief description of your company too as it would increase conversion for this type of flyer, example:

"We are two recent college grads and love owning our own business..."
