I've been researching a bit to feed my curiosity, and i was wondering: what people managed to help the most people in their lifetime, or provide the most value. for instance: Windows 3 helped writers use it as a viable publishing system because it had a font system that made text more legible compared to real paper, and it also helped people at workplaces type up documents and email them to others much quicker than they did before. because of this, around 3 million people bought the software in the first 3 months or so.
obviously the person behind this was bill gates, who sold windows to just about everyone that had a computer. which is a lot of value if you ask me.

who do you think provided the most value in their lifetime? who managed to help and reach the most people with a solution to their problems?

Realistically maybe James Watt or Thomas Edison. While not the first people to "discover" these things (steam engine and harnessing electricity), they were the first to market it, popularize it, and put it in an easily usable form.

Living...

Steve Jobs would be my first guess.

Followed by Jeff Bezos.

Just these two men alone have transformed the culture around the world.

Al Gore for inventing the internet...

Just kidding.

I would say Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They organized the world's information so that it could benefit people all around the world.

Who knows how many inventions have been created and how many people have pulled themselves out of poverty by being able to learn from and access the internet.

Everyone forgot Adam and Eve on their lists. Or whatever mating pair started the human race. Of course, that from our perspective. I'm sure that the earth's other inhabitants have a different point of view...

LOL! Do not forget the Snake then too. It is credited with creating the libido, sex, porn, and eventually the whole intenet!

Hope, direction, inspiration, ideology, philosophy to follow, and even employment for about half of the world's population. People needed those things, and they provided them quite effectively and at the right time.

Their "customers" were quite stupid, they realized in retrospect, but at that time they needed someone to help them with their hard or boring lives, and so these individuals delivered.

The "customers" were humiliated by the reparations Germany was required to pay after WW1 and France occupying part of Germany until they did. Another war was guaranteed. That's why Germany had France surrender in 1940 in the same train car in which Germany surrendered to France in 1918. Hitler was, to some degree, an expression of their frustration. Germany finally paid off their WW1 reparations in 2010.

Napoleon for bringing Enlightenment all over Europe. Thanks to him succeeding in life wasn't a matter of in which noble family you were born, but rather what you have done.

Alan Turing, being undervalued while making a huge impact on the outcome WWII and nowadays computers.

Turing was not just undervalued, he was prosecuted, convicted, and punished - for being gay. He chose chemical castration over prison, which caused him to grow breasts, be depressed, and probably commit suicide when he died of cyanide poisoning. An unceremonious end for a guy that saved his entire country and invented modern computers. He, like Kurt Godel, also had a weird fascination with the Disney film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".

Johannes Gutenberg, hands down.

I would have to go with Gutenberg. Before him, oral history was error prone, and transmitting knowledge by written words was only available to an elite few. After him, anyone with anything important to say, could say it to everyone alive, and everyone who will live in the future (potentially a lot of people).
