2 years ago I spotted a tree sapling that somehow managed to just barely grow from the drainage inside the cellar-window pit.
It was growing inside a pit, littered with old waste, broken glass, only little dirt to grow from and very limited sun.
I found this really amazing and I really sympathized with this little one.
I knew that this wasn't the right place for a plant though and wanted to relocate it.
It was very delicate so I was very cautious.
I don't know, I just felt obliged to do it after noticing the sheer determination of this wonderful plant to live.
(I will show how it looks 2 years later at the end of the post)
Now what does this have with entrepreneurship though?
Well, let me tell you.
You're a plant.
And just like a plant, you’ll thrive much better in a supportive environment than in one that’s cold or unhealthy. Your growth depends on the nutrients you absorb—the knowledge you gain, the relationships you build, and the experiences you have.
But here’s the thing: The wrong nutrients can poison you. Negative influences, toxic relationships, or a lack of resources can stunt your growth or even completely destroy you.
If you find yourself in a place that’s holding you back—like the sapling’s original, harsh environment—you need to make a change. Sometimes, we outgrow the spaces we start in, and what once seemed suitable may become limiting.
Just as I moved the sapling to a better spot where it could truly thrive, you too might need to “relocate” yourself when your current situation no longer serves you. This could mean seeking out new opportunities, surrounding yourself with people who support you, or moving to a place with more fertile soil to grow yourself and your business on.
I'm writing this because I recently found myself in such a pit. I'm currently abroad in Poland and thought that I'd thrive here but I've actually been incredibly lethargic and rarely have been so unproductive.
But I'm just like that little plant.
I will still grow slowly, maybe not much but at least steadily and when the time comes, I'll move to a better spot.
And sprout high into the sky.
