What's stopping me right now on my business are legal issues. What I mean by that:

I am building my own online publishing company using Amazon (Kindle, CSP and ACX publishing) and knowing that I depend on them, I am afraid to do anything that may result to them closing down my account. I have a bit of success and I know exactly what to do to take the business to the next level, but things like that stop me from taking action. I feel like my hands are tied!

I have created a brand name and had a logo made for me, in order to make the business more of an authority on my field of publishing, but I haven't trademarked it or anything. I don't even know if the designer who made the cover for me did a trademark research before creating it. I have no knowledge on law or trademarks and copyrights whatsoever and all of this seems to me so hard.

I want to promote the heck out of my author and books, but I am afraid to use the logo on social media, creating a facebook page, instagram profile etc. I have so many ideas but I am afraid. Afraid I will infringe someone's copyright and afraid I will put it out there and they will steal my idea. It all seems so hard.

Is there maybe someone on this forum that can help? Maybe give me an advice or something? Maybe a tip, something, really anything would help. I really don't know to whom to talk to get help on this and I hoped you guys in this forum could help me. I could use any help I get. I now hold on to everything just because I have faith in myself but time is passing by and I have already lost enough!

The only thing stopping me is myself. I have the tools, knowledge, and work ethic to succeed.

I need to take the leap and go all in on it.

Obviously this is not legal advice as I'm not a lawyer, but I wouldn't worry about it unless your designer stole Nike's logo.

    I'm a quasi-perfectionist and I'm stopping me... It's also very frustrating.

My business experiences have always been software or Internet-related. When doing things for myself, I struggle with the following:

Business Ideas -- Is it the *perfect* idea? Will I hate it in 3 months? Am I passing over a better opportunity? Am I missing a glaring flaw in the plan?

Design work -- I tweak pixels and harshly critique my own work. It takes 2-3x longer than it should, but I'm very left-brained so the end result is never going to be amazing anyway. I certainly contract this out whenever possible, but sometimes it's not necessary or feasible.

Code/Development -- I QA the hell out of it or re-engineer sections of code to make it more "beautiful", efficient, etc... Sometimes with no clear, visible improvement to the end product.

Copywriting -- Takes forever because I re-write statements, clarify meaning, and basically post-edit it as though it were a final draft of a manuscript. Case in point, this simple post took much longer to write than it should have.

Marketing -- I'm not afraid of failing at this. I'm afraid of succeeding. I have this unfounded fear that I will generate a significant amount leads only to fumble the ball at the goal line. So I do it small and half-assed, or I end up retweaking copy, design, and functionality.

Paradoxically, as a consultant, I have no problems executing on any of the above for other companies. Maybe the presence of a contract and/or retainer has something to do with that... Who knows? Despite how it might sound, I am not taking a defeatist attitude. Part of the reason I posted all this just now was to draw a line in the sand for myself and then step over it. I also wanted to encourage any advice, especially from others who might have the same issues.

How do I begin developing the entrepreneurial mindset to get started

Hi all, I've just finished reading the millionaire fastlane. I understand the concept of adding value to the market to become a successful entrepreneur.

I want to elaborate two incidents:
    1) I live in Mumbai and use suburban trains commute to a job. One day as I was sitting on the train which was about to departure I realised that my monthly pass had just passed its expiry date and would have to renew it. As I still had the time I got off the train and went to the ticketing queue to get it renewed.
As I was standing in a queue I started to think about why haven't the railways introduced an app to book tickets and monthly passes online.it would surely benefit the passengers and save time instead of waiting in queues.
So I searched online and found that the railways had already created an app 3 years ago and I assumed that since the commuters were not aware-they were not using it.
A couple of days later i saw an article in the local news paper The Mumbai Mirror 30Jan 2018

that there were glitctwitht the app so I decided to work on that problem.
Then I read MJ's commandments CENTS. Control, Entry, Need Time and Scale

Sure the resolving of the issues would definitely meet the markets (commuters) need. And scale means that as the article noted that only 19000 out of 80 lakh daily local train commuters were using this app. Imagine if the app would have worked as intended it would have served its purpose to a wide range of consumers.

The cons were that the entry is easy. I mean there are thousands of app builders who can rectify this issue and solve this problem easily so entry is diluted. Next is the commandment of Control. The government controls the railways anise in control of what must be implemented and what not. Even if the appus successful; the govt can revert to its old methods of manual ticket booking when it's faced with opposition from the railway unions.

    2) A few days later I was commuting to work and I was watching a downloaded video. Usually people watch videos placing their smartphones on lap andsit in poor posture. So I thought why not create a devicein which the smartphone can be enclosed and the viewer can watch whatever they want without any distractions as they will wear this device like a Virtual Reality gear but cheaper and which will accommodate any smartphone build.

Upon reaching office I searched about this and Google alreadyselling it's stuff online

I felt really stupid and foolish about myself. Now Its been quite some time I wanted to talk about the same feeling MJ felt sitting in the limo in the blizzard. I feel stuck in the slowlane and feel wheather I can escape this?

Can someone help me change my depressing mindset by guiding me exactly what I need to do to expand my vision and learn to identity/spot opportunities.

It would be of immense help if someone who was exactly in my situation who got out of the rut and escaped the slowlane.

Sometimes I am afraid of what people think of me although I want to stop that. I know it is the wrong way and i should not care at all about what people think but I am trying. Any tips?

    Sorry for bumping this thread.

The business I really want to do, owning my own computer/videogame company, the only thing that is really stopping me is money.

    Enough said.

Back in January, I went down to the SBA (Small Business Administration), and spoke with a couple of business counselors.

They said I'd need at least a quarter of a million dollars to get started.

The only advice they could give me is to get a job. And they even suggested getting a job in the industry (which is extremely competitive).

So, I thought about going back for my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, so that I would be more qualified in getting a job in the industry.

But there are other things that arise as well:

    - Do I really want to put myself more in debt with student loans?
    - Even if I do really good and get my degree, there is no guarantee that I will get a job, just like so many other people out there with degrees.
    - I will still have to learn the skills I don't have (which I don't have a problem with, I'd have to learn them anyway), but if I still have to learn a lot on my own, why bother with schooling in the first place?

I'm a believer that if you really want to learn something, you can. When I want to learn programming (like C++), I just buy a really good book and read it and learn it.

I believe that college is too expensive, and sometimes it is not necessary. But I definitely agree that you still have to continually learn and gain new skills.

    - Time. I honestly don't know how much time it would take for me to develop all of the necessary skills needed to be qualified for one of these game industry jobs.

To give you an example of what I'm talking about, here is a list of things that I'd have to know just to be qualified for one of the companies I looked at:

    - C/C++ (I already know some C and a lot of C++)
    - Character Scripting
    - Character Blending
    - LUA, Python, QT, or wxWidgets
    - DX10/11 rendering architectures and APIs
    - Significant Python scripting experience
    - Photoshop, Maya, Adobe After Effects and 3D Studio Max (I know a lot about Photoshop)
    - Maya, Python, Motion Builder, Motion Capture, 3ds Max
    - Experience with physics simulations
    - Creating real time effects through proprietary engines
    - Experience using Substance Painter/Designer
    - Experience using ZBrush
    - Texture creation ability (especially tiling textures
    - Experience creating 2D assets for UI

And there a few more skills.

Now, I have no objection to learning all of these things, and in all honestly, I want to know (I like being diversified and knowing how to do many things), but the problem is: TIME.

And I know that time is an important element in this whole game of life, but then if that is the case, then the only options I can see is working one or two jobs to pay the bills and save some money, until I have the skills to get a gaming job, or start my own business.

And while I don't object to working for a game company, I could never divulge my own ideas that I have for my own projects.

I have goals, but they are hard to obtain.

I'm not trying to make excuses or alibis, but I'm simply saying that if you have the money, you can start your own business. If you don't, you're screwed. It is as simple as that.

And I looked into Government Grants. They only provide funding for businesses that fall into certain sectors, such as Environmental, Research and Development, and other government-interested sectors.

Now, I'm not one to be held back by excuses, and I'm going to continue to push forward, but let's be honest......

The question was asked: What's stopping you?

And the answer I came up with was: How do you start a business if you don't have the necessary money or the means to obtain the money?

I know you're not trying to create excuses but everything your admitting to sounds like fear. I mean people with no money get Investors, take loans, get money friends and family, hustle till they get the cash by flipping or working.

I doubt you need a degree, just get the coding and then create a portfolio good enough to show them. Or maybe code a smaller game and then build up ya know? You can't start coding triple a games out the gate. Start small and make the best indie game out get attention.

Not trying to diminish your concerns, but the only thing stopping you is fear my friend, rid yourself of it and the gates to success open.

And to answer your question nothing is stopping me, If I have a goal in getting it rain sleet or snow!

What is stopping you, right now, from starting your business?
I don't have my product yet.

What is stopping you from making your first sale?
I don't have my product yet.

What is stopping you from making the leap?
Nothing. I'm currently in the design phase of my product. The prototype is being 3D printed as we speak. I need to test it to make sure it fits properly before I can make more and start selling them.

If you've already started your business, what's stopping you from quitting your job?
Can't support myself through my business yet. I actually do get a lot of time off from work (I work about 100 days/year) which I use to work on my business. Not saying that I want to keep my job, but it's necessary until my business can support me.

What is stopping from doubling your revenues and profits?
Right now, the fact that I have no sales and my product is still in the testing phase. Once I get it going, I think I'll only be limited by the demand.

Thanks for writing this. That DEFINETELY hit home for me. I am in a similar situation as well...choosing a generic product and figuring out how to brand it or just start something to try it out and learn (like make a small investment to understand the Amazon Business).

What also hit home for me is EXACTLY what you said about not only my lack of funds (if i had more money, i would totally take the risk so my fear is putting a lot of money and losing everything) and because i lack self confidence, bc i dont believe in myself enough the past few days i even caught myself saying things like "maybe i should just suck it up and get a job" :(

    thank you for sharing that...

Mediocre comfort, action faking (reading, listening to audiobooks/podcasts, going to the gym), searching for the right idea (which I know, is code word for 'easy' idea), 'self-improvement', fear/lack of belief, information overload, not knowing where to start and bottom line just too damn lazy to take action in entrepreneurship.

It's strange, I work my a$$ off physically in jiu-jitsu, bodybuilding, sports and have had phenomenal success. I feel I could outwork anybody in those fields. I put 1000s of hours into the guitar/performing which put me through many stressful, frustrating and scary experiences - yet I was able to push through. Hell I even work my a$$ off in my job. I'm no stranger to the Process Principle. I am a hard worker. But I can't seem to translate my work ethic to entrepreneurship. Maybe I dont REALLY want it bad enough. Or maybe since I've been naturally athletic throughout my life, I have an easier time working hard in physical areas because I know I'll do well. So maybe I'm scared of failing. Maybe the things I've excelled at were all for selfish/egotistical reasons, and I've yet to become motivated for unselfish reasons. maybe it's all those things and more, but I think I can boil it down to not wanting it bad enough (yet).

I've been here nearly 2 years, read/listened to both books 10+ times and yet here I am with nothing to show for it except an ebook I threw up on Amazon that made me ~$100. Bit of a shame...

I won't quit though. I will succeed and achieve freedom. The rat race ain't my kind of race.

I hear you on that one. I put a system in place to limit the number of books I buy and read:
    1. Is the book helping in solving an immediate problem I am facing or one that I know with 95% certainty I will be facing within 4 weeks?
    2. Is there a more effective way to solve the problem than a book? Am I inventing reasons to read books?
    3. Do I possess in my library a book that has the solution?
It is not perfect but it is working well. So few books have made it through the criteria recently, which forced me to act on stuff. I find myself reading part of books I have and trying stuff.

(Fun fact: Unscripted barely made the cut. And so far I have really read one chapter: the commandment of Needs)

    Hope it helps!

I feel like I'm in the same place as this member. Now I don't think I'm stupid, lazy, irresponsible or a sidewalker. On the other hand I wonder what I have to offer anyone that could become a fastlane. It mainly boils down to feeling like I don't have the talent and the toughness.

What is stopping you, right now, from starting your business?
    1.)No direction or business knowledge.
2.)I am not speaking English perfect (I think this is important, am I wrong?).
3.)Moved to Germany 2 and a half years ago and the language barrier is just too damn big, I hate it! Consider that I am not lazy and learn every day (even on my work hiding in a toilet :D). This is the worst one, don't get me wrong I can speak well, but that is far away from needed level for doing business.
4.) Me and my girlfriend need to make big investment for her language course (7000$ or more) and college, plus we need to do it in just two years. Time anchor is heavy on this one.

What is stopping you from making your first sale?

Nothing and with that being said everything above is just irrelevant?

What is stopping you from making the leap?
Nothing, I can invest up to 6000$ right now.

What is stopping from doubling your revenues and profits?
    Not knowing how.

What is stopping me from starting my business:
    • Self-beliefs problems. I have always been insecure because of many things that happend in my early life. Also I have this conviction that you have to show some "signs" of entrepreneurship when you are young to become one, so I am not eligible for that. And the worst is that I am not clever enough to create business (agh.. killing me everyday).
    • Lack of ideas. I've created one product, but it was so heavy (60kg) and expensive and it also broke some of the CENTS rules. I would probably just change job for another job. And it didn't provide much value, even though it looks awesome. Now I am stuck. I guess I am not 'set' to hear the problems.
What is stopping you from making your first sale:
    • Lack of product or niche. I've always wanted to have a business I can run wherever I am. And there is no Amazon in my country. biophase answered me that there are people selling on Amazon, who are not living in US. I wonder how they do it. But still... no product.
What is stopping you from making the leap:
    • Uhm... My mindset? Not sure.

I don't think that, in general, people care if your English is perfect. I appreciate that you can speak English. I can't speak German. I speak some Spanish, though not much, but my experience has always been that people appreciate the effort, because if I can speak some of their language, and they can speak some of mine, then communication becomes much easier, even if neither of our efforts are perfect.

I agree. Still learning Dutch now, in the middle of trying to figure out whether I'm staying or going with a permit being renewed. I made the mistake of focusing too much to forum and working on projects, and educating myself, and frankly, the last month since I got back from Michigan been kind of flooding myself with Dutch Language. I was lucky to be online in the right place at the right time for a free dutch language app a developer was making and testing, so that saved me some money. I also have the Delfte Method for Dutch App and book, but I'm kind of intimdated with NT2 exam videos I see on You Tube. Dutch is quite difficult to learn and I'm so used to Speaking English sounds. I search for alot of stuff online. And on top of it they all speak Dialect and hard enough just learning the regular Dutch, and it's different town to town. Well If I have to go back to the States Next month, I will have to see what my next adventure will be.

That not an answer. That's another question. You need to change the question

What is stopping you, right now, from starting your business?
I have already started my business. Now I need to take it to the next level and get things rolling.

What is stopping you from making your first sale?
I made my first sale yesterday after 6 months of trying new things and learning. Now I want to expand outwards, multiply my success, and diversify what I sell.

What is stopping you from making the leap?
I would say the biggest thing is not knowing if I am making the correct decision. Also, some financial needs as well, I am working on cutting expenses and getting myself to a position where I can more reliably put more effort into it.

If you've already started your business, what's stopping you from quitting your job?
I need to get to where my business will pay for my basic expenses and living.

What is stopping from doubling your revenues and profits?
Over the past year I have been doing everything as a solopreneur. I want to meet more people to potentially work with and share ideas with.
