When I first started learning new skills, my default approach was online courses. I’d enroll, follow the modules, and try to cover everything from start to finish. It felt structured, but sometimes overwhelming. I would try to understand and remember everything, but in the end, I would burn out, and soon realize that after a few weeks, I would forget.
In 2021, I started my AI learning journey. It started out with same usual online course (Andrew Ng's Machine Learning Specializition and Deep Learning Specialziation). In 2024, I joined a community that would do collaborative AI projects. Then first project I enmrolled in was creating a predictive model using XGBoost. I knew nothing about the topic. I looked at a few videos to grasp the basics. But I was able to finish the project within the 4 week timeline. I found myself learning in a completely different way. Instead of trying to cover every possible concept upfront, I dove right in. I learned only what I needed to move forward. This made learning feel faster, more relevant, and more motivating.
This way of learning also connected with something I read in The Millionaire Fastlane . MJ wrote about executing business ideas—start by taking action, then learn only what’s necessary to keep moving. That mindset is how I approach learning itself. I have been able to build 4 AI apps with this mindset, it has been an absolute game changer for me. I'm no longer afraid of doing something I've never done. Do it, then learn as needed.
Everyone has their own way of learning—some prefer structure, others thrive on experimentation. What about you? How do you learn best? I would love to hear your exeperience!
Note: For some skills, you still need to go through an entire course (recently trying to learn how to write a visitor counter for my website with javascript), so my method would be to skim through an entire javascript course. Not trying to remember anything unless relevant, for concepts I don't understand, just ask ChatGpt or any llm, Gen AI has made learning easier, I like to call it learning on the go.
