It's a modern virtual reality headset and it'll be coming out soon. Will it be the beginning of the next big thing or a flop like last time?

I don't think its more than a novelty yet. Why?
I think it comes down to the marketting and the market.

I think if it was connected to a big game launch that needed it, and a console, it would have a chance to catch on, but as it is people might be apprehensive and while aware of the headsets just aren't eagerly awaiting buying it.

In a few years it might gain traction imo once people are familiar with the benefits.
Personally, I'd get pewdiepie and other top end lets play guys to play a few games with it on, and really showcase it.

But maybe thats exactly what we'll see, and if so, cool!

I vote flop though (as much as I don't want it to).

I recall watching an interview with the kid who designed it and he said he used to buy old virtual reality headsets, find them really shitty and improve on them since he was like 12. He got the money to do it by fixing and selling iPhones. Later he got funded for Rift through a successful Kickstarter. So it sounds like he went through the Process.

Facebook already bought Oculus Rift for $2bn.

John Carmack who is a nerd genius is their CTO.

Based on those 3 things I think it has potential to be big, but will see.

Personally, I'd get pewdiepie and other top end lets play guys to play a few games with it on, and really showcase it.
It's already being done, just type in "oculus rift" in youtube, millions of views.

It is a great tool for simulations, video games industry. But it looks crazy as hell.

Scientists working on VR 10-15 years ago made huge claims how world will change but as we can see VR is still in development stages. When you watch a long 3D movie I bet you a get a sick feeling. Our system has not got used to this shit. Eyes and body send opposite signals to brain and with VR it only gets worse.
I don't see me buying this product so maybe a flopp but who knows I can be wrong. Mark Zuckerberg invested 2 billion dollars in Oculus Rift. Hope dude know what he is doing.

Wow, that was so terrible...

Ok, then, I stand corrected, they NEED an oculus GAME, because watching is just... irritating.

It could have gone either way, but John Carmack is handling this thing. So I'm trusting this is going to be big.

I'm personally a big fan of it and believe it will do reasonably well but won't be a huge blockbuster. A lot of people simply just don't like to strap things onto their head.

It's the same with the 3d market. Playstation also already has a prototype of their own. Now if they could make it so you didn't need to strap anything on that would be another story. Sounds crazy but Microsoft is experimenting with a technology that engulfs your living room with visual effects outside of the tv.

Was that an affiliate link?

Update: there are 3 of what look like affiliate links from different people in this thread. Have we been hacked?

@Vigilante ? @AllenCrawley ?

That's what I thought too. All these links, I can't tell if the user is posting them or if the forum is inserting them automatically.

Like any good technology, before you know, it gets applied to porn. Go to 28:55 for the culmination.

Whether it's going to be a flop, no idea. Fact is, there are still relatively big problems with nausea when using these headsets for longer periods of time due to the brain being tricked that it's moving when it's not. There are people working on it and potential solutions sound total sci-fi. But for me personally feeling nauseous is not worth the virtual experience and I would bet it's the same for most people. In the long term virtual reality is most likely going to be causing revolutions but I doubt anything significant will happen in the short term. Similar story with Bitcoin and other mind-bending technologies, they all take awhile to get adopted on massive scale.

I myself was contemplating ideas of how to take advantage of Oculus Rift but in the end decided that it's unlikely to cause such a big stir for developers like iPhone did with its App Store, so like with any pursuit unless you are already passionate about games or things to which you could apply VR, forget it. Notably, I have seen Oculus Rift being used not only for games and porn but things like house models which you can inspect in virtual reality so there are definitely more potential applications.

If you want to get nice, quick overview of everything that's happening in virtual/augmented reality space and its future, I would really recommend this episode from The Guardian Technology podcast.

I personally see it taking off but not becoming massive, I think it would do nicely in making running on a treadmill or stationary bike more interesting at least. I haven't researched much but the omni virtuix looks rather interesting

In my opinion VR has the potential to seriously change the world.

I already have some ideas of accelerated learning and stress management software and there are already some people doing experiments about the developing of human consciousness using this technology.

Obviously when you see these gadgets you think about gaming, porn and stuff...

But if you think about the possibilities this brings us in combination with other technologies like 3D printing it's very exciting.

Now a designer can experience and manipulate his creations in real time as if they were in front of him.

In the future this could mean a new industrial revolution.

The difference between today's Virtual Reality and whatever technology created in the past, including 3D, is "presence".

Presence means that our brain can't really distinguish what's virtual of what's real so you have the sensation of being "present" there.

What if thanks to VR you could help people with "mental/emotional disorders" avoiding any form of medication?
What if you could help athletes to improve their skills faster without coaching?
What if you could improve your reading speed, your memory and becoming smarter faster than ever before?
What if you could be more productive because you can have a virtual 100" desktop? And what about a 360º desktop?
What about digital arts or remote teaching?

Yes, overall people see VR as another unnecessary set of gadgets, and I can't blame them, each year there is another NEW technology.

But if I can think of amazing uses that can affect people in a positive way, there are more people too.

I think it's Segway 2.0. Will have a niche but massively overhyped because it's the kind of thing that gets media attention.

I suspect the general public simply don't want most of what it offers. Those with an interest in that kind of thing tend to be overrepresented in the media and especially in online/tech influence. So they generate hype because it excites them. They aren't a particularly reliable barometer of wider market success.

I bought an IPhone because it is a simple tool that makes many aspects of life easier. It managed to replace my digital camera, my phone, in some cases my laptop. In contrast VR Headsets don't make life easier and just look straight out annoying. I don't see them replacing eyes anytime soon.

elatively big problems with nausea when using these headsets for longer periods of time due to the brain being tricked that it's moving when it's not.

My other half bought a Developer Release Oculus Rift so there's been one with us for about a year.

I can't tell you much about it as I'm not a gamer and my other half only ever played with it rather than programming. But the tricking the brain it's moving thing...everyone who tried the demo videos had to sit down and hold the arms of the chair immediately.

I didn't really like the experience but I think it offers a pretty good immersive experience.

I couldn't be bothered to stay with it because I'm not into games.
If you're a serious gamer, I think you'd like it enough to get used to it.

Actually that reminds me that I'm sure I was offered the chance to fly over the surface of Mars...that I am interested in.

I've thought a lot about this.

I think it'll be a big hit, like others have said in this thread, it'll be a new platform but I don't think it will have the same mass appeal as smart phones.
