I just got feedback back from a project I did.

I got blamed for being late because I arrived at 9.30 every day (my contracted hours are 09.30 - 17.30). Apparently this led to my manager having to do more work.

I even didn't go to lunch for my hour break and had food at my desk. No mention of this.

The manager was letting me leave 30 mins early sometimes because there was no work to do. There were times when he said we are top of everything there is nothing for you at the moment.

No F*cking appreciation in the Corporate World. A load of shit.

Now I'm deciding whether to put up with another 2 years and a half of this crap, or quitting now and focusing full time on my start-up.

The irony is I may have to stay now, because if I leave now my reference is not going to be any good.

Start applying to new positions, in the meantime I encourage you not to quit until your fastlane venture is generating more income than you're job.

Why do you need a reference for your own company?

Start working on your fastlane gig on the side now so you don't have to deal with Corp politics anymore. Channel this energy and use it as your motivation. Visualize the day you walk up to your boss and hand him your walking paper and see the reaction on his face:)

Don't do it. If you go in thinking you will fail guess what will happen.
If my start-up failed and I ever needed a reference after that.

I am 23 so I'd be surprised if I don't do another job after this.

I'd never recommend quitting unless you have something else lined up. If you're going all-in on your start-up after this, why not wait for them to fire you instead?

Who cares about recommendations? Ask another person to be a reference instead.

I'm not sure about US laws, but in Canada firing people without cause is tough. They have to prove that you have a proven record of incompetence and can't be trained despite their attempts. Otherwise you get one heck of a nice package.

My point?

If that feedback doesn't go in your record, then you still have three strikes available to you. One strike might be that you were caught working on your start-up at work...just sayin...

Don't worry about the reference. A previous employer can't legally bad mouth you to a future employer (unless it is off-the-record). All they will do is verify that you worked there. Just list a person that you get along with at your current job as a professional reference.

Other than that, I agree with the rest of the advice. Don't quit your job without a plan. Either search for a different job or go hard on your start-up while on this job. Once your start-up is successful, then ditch the corporate world.

23 is no age. Unless you have debts or liabilities you need to take care of, get out. You have plenty of time to make mistake and correct them. The later you leave it the harder it will be and the less time you will have. I appreciate that people want to make a money asap but don't forget to enjoy the journey.

You know what's funny? You complaint now, what if one day your start-up ends up becoming a big business, and now it's your turn to deal with this politics stuff except from the other side, now laugh at that.
