The "copy a website for sale" method

Many years ago I spoke to a guy who posed as a buyer of websites on Flippa and eBay. The seller would tell him all the juicy details about the internals of the business. Then when he found a hot candidate, he would basically duplicate the website on his own instead of buying it.

It was an interesting strategy and he did well back then, this was 10+ years ago. I've since lost touch with him. He did Adsense and info product type duplications.

Just curious if you guys have done anything similar and found success with it. He did say that you have to be careful even when doing this strategy. Some of the websites on Flipa themselves are schemes.

For example, the entire backlink profile may be from a low quality link farm and the new buyer realizes this too late after Google severely downgrades the website.

Or the financial screenshots could be fabricated, etc. Worse risks for real buyers than fake ones although if you try to duplicate a scam you waste a lot of time.
