I've been looking for direction for some time now. I have $5000 to startup a business. I have no family but my home life sucks. So. I am going to rent a small office space where I can go and work my tail off to sell direct mailings. Basically we design, print, target, and mail business brochures to potential customers. I'm hiring myself to sell monthly mailings to businesses. I've never rented an office. What are your thoughts?

Why would you rent an office and waste money? Just do it out of your house, and wouldn't focusing on online be more efficient?

I can't get anything done at home because I live on solar power in the desert. There isn't enough power to run a tv or laptop for very long.

There are still a lot of people sending and receiving direct mail. We like to think online ads have made direct mailings obsolete, but not yet.

I have no family but my home life sucks.... I can't get anything done at home because I live on solar power in the desert. There isn't enough power to run a tv or laptop for very long.

Also, in your introduction, you wrote...

I am currently blessed with a lot of time, an MBA, ability to live/move anywhere, and seed cash.

So...

What's stopping you from moving and getting a place where you can live and work from, and save yourself the daily commute to and from this "desert" with no mains power?

We like to think online ads have made direct mailings obsolete, but not yet.

That may be true, but @sparechange's point was about efficiency in the light of your particular circumstances... not the obsolescence of direct mailings.

And knowing where you're based would help put things into the proper perspective, as that $5,000 won't even get you a month's commercial real estate rent in some cities... and direct mail is indeed dead (or never even ever existed) in some countries.
