Is anybody doing a "sober October" challenge ? I started three days ago and already feel I'm making progress, we could make it's own thread here. It doesn't have to be about alcohol, it can be any bad habit that you want to erase from your life.

It can be cuting the news, twitter, youtube while eating, porn, weed, whatever you want. Let's share our self improvement.

The whole world needs to go on a sober-challenge...

I suggest avoiding mainstream news for the month and see how you feel. This can be websites, SMedia Feeds, anything that fills your mind with "here's what's going on now" and "BREAKING!" BS.

Trust me, you'll feel light years better.

I've avoided mainstream 'news' and websites for close to several years now, and with each day log on to them less and less (close to never now).

Of course, the flip side of this is I might miss some event , fact or development that MIGHT affect me at some point (politics, taxes, local infrastructure, etc) -- BUT most of my thinking is if it's important enough to be considered, someone close to me will inform me of it or put it on the discussion block.

You also have to be OK with appearing 'ignorant' or 'UN-CLUED in' in social settings, and not have a real opinion on a lot of the matters - and not only am I OK with it, many times I am PROUD of the fact of not knowing what's going on.

The caveat here is many think following the news will actually lead them to make the 'correct' or the 'better' decision - but the IRONIC part (that has been shown over and over) - is even IF you were shown the biggest headlines of the last 10 years (or the following 10) - you would still not know which way to bet for or against the markets. COVID was a solid example of this.

To me the trade-off is WELL worth it, and bottom line, there is absolutely close to NOTHING that I missed important enough to make a real difference to my life. Sure, there comes time when some due diligence is necessary to participate in our democracy to make an INFORMED choice, but I choose to do due-diligence on that myself, rather then follow anything that the news spits out (with an agenda behind it).

I've noticed the trend that (especially today) - every headline is an attention grab, and some facts or predictions that are all mostly hot air and total BS. Obviously, much of it stems from encouraging fear in individuals, and fear sells (now do THIS, or buy THIS product, or take THIS action). And with shorter and shorter attention spans, it's important to make it look like there's a FIRE in your backyard happening RIGHT NOW.

Avoiding mainstream news + focusing on PRODUCTION more instead of consumption, with a long term horizon outlook has kept my mind very healthy and living in the present day to day.

Dont listen to him. He just says this because he knows that I'm in the trenches with my hazmat suit on every day and I'll let him know if anything important enough comes along or if he needs to get his bugout bag ready.

Thank you for starting this :)

The focus for me will be cutting out caffeine. I've tried it a few times before without too much success and it felt really challenging. I will still be having the occasional cup of decaf coffee, so not going to exactly 0, but close to it.
I also won't have any alcohol, have done so before for a longer time, and this isn't really too difficult for me anymore, but it still feels like I need to quit it because it clearly seems like a net negative for me atm: quickly messes with my sleep and how I feel the day(s) afterwards; and what do you really get out of it?
Lastly, I'll also add the no media/"just checking" task to my list for most days. Did some days to test recently already and, while I'm not an extreme consumer, I already felt like I got a lot more done and more in control of my days. It's a good feeling to be more selective with your time, creating more focus and peace of mind; even if it means avoiding some valuable and entertaining content (like threads on this forum even) if they don't serve you at this time.

I'll be curious to read how others get along in getting more sober here. Good luck everyone!
