Great video/rant discussing why there aren't good American alternatives to solar. Why do we still rely on China for a lot of technology? Basically in Fastlane terms we are consumers instead of producers.

My take away is there is a need for inventors, engineers and people who bring value. Lots of opportunity for us who want to go Fastlane.

What does the future of America look like? Will we ever be able to compete against China again?

View: https://youtu.be/HryiadpkssQ

Back Story:
He went from homeless living in a van for 10 years to owning a 5,000 sqft house.
How many of you can honestly say that they wake up well rested in the morning? Do any of you actually wake up pumped up and ready to go like all the BS motivational gurus like to say in their videos?

I usually wake up terribly tired and struggle to get up. It usually takes me 30-60 minutes to feel better and that's after I get up (I can sleep through two alarm clocks and get up an hour later).

I've found the following are major factors:

Eating close to bedtime (within ~2-3hrs) has a negative effect

2 drinks or less that day is best, with Zero preferrable for the best sleep

Sleeping on my stomach instead of my back/sides keeps my snoring from waking me up

Getting enough exercise (gym plus some days of 2-3hrs of my favorite sport) makes me go out like a light

Setting my alarms to a gentle wake mode, meaning, the one in my bedroom starts by a very dimmed light 10mins before the alarm and gradually gets brighter before playing loud beach noises. Very pleasant. Phone is in another room with louder but still somewhat gentle alarm as backup, but it rarely gets to that unless I've been drinking

My watch is a very unobtrusive, non touch-screen smartwatch that I forget about, but it records breath, pulse, and vO2 and monitors sleep. After over a month with it, I believe it when it says I slept poorly. What was funny was on some of the nights that I get the best sleep, I wake up a bit drunk feeling and goofy, even though I didn't have anything to drink the night before.

Also, reading a paper book instead of going to sleep to movies/youtube is a lot better when going to bed.

But now that you've done that, what steps are you going to take?

I don't know you, and I don't know your situation, but here's what I see in your post.

- You are working 60+ hour weeks.
- You got promoted. Therefore management recognizes your capabilities at some level.
- If you've been with the company long enough to be promoted, you've been there long enough to get the salary commensurate with those responsibilities.
- It appears that management will be happy to continue to push you past your limit.
- When a company is pushing a good employee past the limits of human endurance this way, THEY have a HIRING problem. It's not YOU who needs to magically get stronger.
- You're planning to work 4-6 hours a day on your VACATION. Dude, you need a break. Just look at what just happened. This is not sustainable.

Let's look at options that don't involve finding release by ending everything.

Please don't go that route.

You matter. You are valuable.

- Take your actual vacation, all of it. Rest. If there are ramifications that make it seem impossible for you to ACTUALLY take the full time off, let them deal with the ramifications.
- If you can, spend some time outside - in the woods - at the beach - in a botanical garden - or somewhere peaceful where you can be away from electronics.
- Offload any responsibilities you're not being paid for, immediately. If this involves quitting, so be it. You are the kind of person that employers will see the value in. It's not worth your life.
- Give yourself time for the cortisol levels to diminish so that you can see clearly. You are so stressed right now, it's hard to think straight. Give yourself permission to chill and relax until the day before your vacation ends. Then, think through a plan of action and execute.

Just my two cents..

You've got this. You can make it. You have options.

They don't have enough people, enough hands to deliver or to make sure things are delivered well.

The system cannot cope with inefficiencies, has no staff redundancies built into it and needs to push the existing employee base beyond reasonable utilisation.

You're in the middle of it, busy delivering, and can't see how much slack the system could tolerate before it would benefit from letting you go. At the moment, the cost to replace you is likely higher than the cost of letting you pretend you work only half of that 60h week. This is the leverage you don't realise you have.

You're applying your strong work ethic to the work you're doing for the man (which isn't taking you where you want) and not for yourself. Decide which path you want to take (no value judgement in slowlane vs fastlane!) and adjust your time, the most precious resource, accordingly.

Take a step back and revisit where you want to go (not from what you run away,).

2) You have a delegation problem (aka "saying no" problem).

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. You're busy delivering work and you've had no time to build a system (even within the slowlane system) that supports your efforts more efficiently. Have you surrounded yourself with people who could do some of your work? Have you said no to some/many tasks and let others deal with them?

Independently of the slowlane vs fastlane choices, the secret is to shield yourself from things that you can't/don't want to do efficiently anymore and let others do them instead. Leave the room for big picture thinking. Otherwise, you'll be like a CEO of a scale-up who's still acting like a CEO of an early-stage start-up. This only makes things inefficient and terribly painful for everyone.

Good luck!
