If I didn't hate my job, I'd shut up, stay put, happily cash my check, and I wouldn't be posting here. Some people get off on the type of work I do, but I'm thinking I may have made a mistake. I could possibly Money Mustache it, but I honestly don't know how much more I can take.

After HS graduation I got started on an engineering degree, after learning the types of physical hardship and mediocre pay that trade work brought. Years later, after part-time under-the-table self-employed jobs, full-time work in truck shops, and full-time college schedules I graduated with a BSME. Now I sit in a cube with no window, grinding my life away for that $1700/80 hrs that another member posted about.

If not for the current circumstances, I would've bailed by now. I'm not going to burn this bridge, but I will be done in 6-8 months. At the very least I'll be driving a truck, working every day, and paying the bills. I've never been in a position with so much opportunity. A small investment in tooling will get me the fab shop I've been wanting. A few quick mods to an unused truck can potentially earn the company $140/hr. I have a killer BBQ sauce recipe that I can bring to market. WA is the place to start a distillery. I have a good amount of experience with product development, prototyping, machining, and injection molding. I may have enough dough to launch something without going into debt.

Unless this thread takes off, I'll hash all of this out in greater detail in a more appropriate forum. I'm looking forward to getting something off the ground. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thank you for the introduction and welcome to the forum.

Are any of your ideas based on a value skew or a good possibility of a productocracy?

Welcome to the forum, I hope to see your progress thread and successful story soon enough. Maybe even try that barbecue sauce!

Good luck!

I only want to discourage you from 1 of your ideas.... I know 138 guys with the greatest sauce in the world so if you decide on this one either make it go viral FAST or keep it on the porch.

Generally yes.
With metal fab/machining, I can pull work on word of mouth and reasonable quotes on low volume, quality work. As a side gig I can easily pay for the cost of tooling. Theres a lack of 3d cnc programmers in the area, and would be a good start for product development. I have more ideas along these lines, but I wont spill the beans just yet.
If I get back into trucking I'll be working a big driver shortage to my advantage. Either way I have the skill combined with low barriers, and low overhead.
Brown liquor is pretty hot, especially in WA, but requires a large initial investment (land, facilities, equipment, permitting, licensing). This may be an advantage over the BBQ sauce idea, and I know how to make good booze.

This is pretty much what I've been thinking. BBQ sauce is kinda easy (lots of competition). I'm more of an inventor than a salesman, but it never hurts to explore the options.

Update

Structural changes at work left me in a better position. My departure is open-ended.

Due to a couple shake-ups, the business I had somewhat hoped of running some day is looking pretty bleak.

I am debt free, and have a decent down payment saved up.

The main priority is getting shop space, which might take a while. I've pulled some side gigs, logistics is the tough part in going full-time.

Still building, still making progress.

Could I mention something that I read on your initial post that might be a bit challenging?
