My answer comes from my personal understanding of the world and what I perceive to be a winner.
Winners are people with leverage. There's probably a better term, but leverage feels right because winners can move things and make results appear effortless to others.
Leverage isn't limited to money. I've encountered people who received what they asked for, not through wealth, but through the credibility and "credit" they've built in the relationship accounts they maintain with others.
Winners have mastered themselves. This enables them to deeply understand others, their behaviors, motivations, and drives. They lead naturally, and others willingly follow. Serving and accomplishing tasks for a true winner brings satisfaction to those around them. I know you’ve seen this many times in your life. I’ve done this for my leader during my time in the Army.
People depend on winners, looking to them for guidance and opportunities to succeed. You likely already know that helping others achieve success brings even greater returns to you. True winners are surrounded with people who genuinely root for them and love them, not lions or vipers trying to take their place. Winners create success within their sphere of influence, and wherever they go, success follows.
This version of a winner doesn't live in fear or fight for survival. They are respected and loved, living a life of genuine abundance. Winners can thrive anywhere, anytime, with anyone.
That’s my definition of a winner and it’s the person I’m trying to become. This purposeful life is worth living and it’s satisfying to see how far I would come as a human being on my death bed.
Geography doesn’t seem to be as important as community. It doesn’t matter where you land in the world if you can’t take on the challenge of building a community around you. Otherwise, you’re simply bringing old habits from one location to the next.
Ask yourself if you’re trying to escape rather than face the challenge. Similar to moving from one business to another or chasing the next shiny object. Success often comes from sustained effort focused on one thing over a long period.
If winning is about impact rather than trophies, you will be cherished by people for the systems of success you’ve built. Systems that outlast you.
