Hi!
After yet another period of painful confusion about my direction in life (I've had way too many of those by now, at the ripe age of 37 years old) and after being stuck in business-ideas-brainstorming limbo, I have decided to keep myself accountable using this thread.
I'm trying to follow some of the sound advice I've encountered since joining the forum - such as "what is something you know people will pay you for", "what are some skills you have that can be translated into value for others" and “Go online and you’re competing with everyone. Stay local and the field gets much smaller.”
So I have decided to follow two different paths simultaneously.
An online Astrology business (yes, it did start off as a passion project) and a local pet and house-sitting business.
Astro business
- have been interested in the topic for 15 years and have been studying extensively for the last 1.5 years
- started a Youtube channel this year, I'm low on content due to procrastination and perfectionism but have uploaded 9 videos already, one of them recently got 3600 views which was rewarding, lots of comments, too. Started collecting emails through freebies.
- have done some free and paid readings and received very good reviews - everything on that front has been through word-of-mouth recommendations
- currently working on the website which will have
1) a free birth chart calculator (that I will always direct youtube viewers to)
2) downloadable free guides
3) paid semi-automated digital reports
4) paid consultations (very time consuming but relatively high ticket offerings)
- in the coming months will work on an AI Astrology app
- now that AI is getting so advanced when it comes to boosting productivity, I can also branch out into Instagram and TikTok content
House/Pet sitting business
- helping people who travel with looking after their house, plants and/or pets while they're away
- I have many years of experience looking after cats, have worked in a cat shelter and since relocating to Germany a year ago, have actually done some pet-sitting gigs locally through online platforms
- the idea is that when it comes to cat sitting, you can only find sitters through these digital platforms that connect you to private individuals who you then meet and they come to your house to feed your cats, administer medications if needed, clean the litter trays etc. The problem is that there is a lot of risk involved when inviting a stranger into your house and trusting them with your beloved pets. I believe people who can afford it will prefer to pay a bit more but hire someone who's put their name behind a business entity with insurance and credentials. This is at least my theory.
- the nice thing is that this is a recurring service - if they're happy they don't want to switch to a new person
- the downside is that cats are independent animals and for the most part people hire cat sitters only when they travel for extended periods of time and can't find a friend or neighbour to look after their pets
- the plan is to start sorting out the certifications and insurance needed, create a website with Lovable AI, craft some nice fliers and brochures and start giving them out at local cafes, vet clinics and what not.
- I live in a very tiny town which is however 20 min by car from a very wealthy municipality, that will be my main target area
- I'm considering offering a cleaning service as well, for those customers who would like to come back from their trip to a tidy and clean house/apartment
- of course the idea is that if the business grows I will eventually hire people and expand into the nearby large cities
p.s. My first post in the forum was about an idea for delivering home-made vegan food. I had to sunset that idea however due to the fact that Germany is a very challenging country to start a business in something so highly regulated as food, and on top of that I don't speak the local language (I'm trying but it will take me at least a few years to become fluent in German).
Thank you so much for all the helpful contributions in this forum and I welcome any criticism or advice. I am not good at business, I have done lots of stupid things in my life and at this point have very little ego. I just want to do my best, pursue meaningful goals, outgrow unhealthy habits, create value for others and hopefully one day make myself proud.
