You've heard of Lovable, and from what I've seen, that will definitely fit the bill for most folks. However, for me personally, as an ex software engineer, I like to have a little bit more control over what I build. I have been out of the software engineering game for a while though so I am not up to date on the latest and greatest. I even tried learning a few new languages a few years ago to build a web app that I have been wanting to build for a while but failed miserably and just gave up.
Fast forward to last week and I decided to give "vibe coding" a real try.
I've been journaling every night for 14 years and the main thing that helped me stay consistent was reading last year's entry before writing today's entry. I had been doing manually with google docs for a while, which is perfectly fine, but wanted to build something more user friendly for myself. Introducing deardiario.com
So last Thursday night I asked a few buddies which tools they recommended - they said Cursor + Claude Sonnet to build the app. I went and set it up and started building.
It is the most fun I've had building anything in...well, ever really. It takes away a lot of the headaches of software engineering and puts you in the driver seat of actually building the thing you want to build. I even added some extra features like extracting entries and having a streak for days you are journaling consecutively.
Tools used:
- Cursor + Claude Sonnet for the main webapp build
- UXPilot AI for the UI/UX designs (this one leaves a bit to be desired but gave me a solid UI to work with)
- Vercel for the domain + hosting
- Open AI for the AI search in the webapp
- Stripe/Google OAuth for general functionality in the app
Spent so far: $62
I might spend a little more soon to upgrade my database to have some extra functionality but still, just $62 to have an actual running webapp in just a week's worth of work? As a side hustle mind you, cause I have my own full time job PLUS I've been playing Arc Raiders quite a bit + have a girlfriend.
All in all, if you want more flexibility with what you build and don't mind getting a little technical, I would highly recommend giving the above options a chance.
If you have any questions on set up or how to get started, let me know. Happy to help or answer any questions at all!
