So I met this girl on Tinder as I'm traveling through the United Kingdom...She says she wants to build an internet business so she can travel to Thailand with me next year...
I'm editing a book I wrote in 2014 about the mindset changes of being an entrepreneur, so I decided to write out a rough draft of a chapter to her.
To all the writers out there..words seem to flow so much better when you're writing TO someone
...and we didn't even go on our first date yet. [HASHTAG]#nowonderwhyimsingle[/HASHTAG]
I don't have the time - but I want the rewards
So you say you want to be an entrepreneur, but you say you don't have the time or money.
Nobody has the time.
When I first got started, I made the excuse that I didn't have the money. I was broke, unemployed, in debt, and living at my parent's house in the middle of a rural part of the country with no jobs.
I had no money.
I had no clue what to do, so I did the most logical thing any person wanting to build an internet business would do. I learned how to code websites.
Without the money for any formal education or degree in computer science, I went to the internet to learn for free. There were websites that had free tutorials on everything from HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, and some other coding languages that I never heard of.
I spent four months learning how to code websites.
My first website was a social network for dead people.
Nobody signed up.
Yes, I'm serious.
That business was an epic failure. So here I was, knowing how to code, but I had no clue how to get people to visit the website, so I bought books on marketing and advertising.
I eventually coded a single-page website, with an e-book that I wrote for free in microsoft word, and promoted it to one website..and made $50 from that sale (this first sale took me over 1 year and 2 months to make.
You say you don't have the time.
After the unemployment phase, with $250 to my name, I drove 2,000 miles across the country to Phoenix, Arizona - where I got a job as a customer service agent.
I woke up early, worked long hours, made friends, had a social life, went to the gym, and lived the typical lifestyle that most people are accustomed to.
But I was too busy to start my business.
I didn't have the time...
But did I really not have the time?
I stopped going out to party on the weekends with my friends.
Whenever I was dating a girl who wanted me to dedicate more of my time to her, I sacrificed my relationships.
I cut down going to the gym from 6 days a week to 3.
If you want to have success in entrepreneurship, you're going to have to make sacrifices.
You do have the time...but at the start, you'll have to sacrifice other areas of your life. Social life, etc.
I'm sure if you really think about what you do day in and day out - you can make 15 minutes...30 minutes...perhaps one hour per day to work on building your business.
I remember years ago before I had my first business success, I made the excuse of not having enough time to build my business. Then I read a story about a man who worked 60 hours per week, had a wife and 4 kids that he had to take care of, but sacrificed his sleep and weekends to build a mobile advertising company.
He sold that company for $1.5 Million within a few years.
Yes, you're busy. But that only means yes...you can make the time if you're dedicated.
Nobody told you this is going to be easy...It's going to have to be an obsession...and you'r going to have to fully commit to this lifestyle of an entrepreneur if you want to have success.
From 2012-June 2014 - I packed up my car and drove 2,000 miles across the country to be mentored by some entrepreneurs to chase my dream. I gave up my friends, the gym, my nights, my weekends. I read 50 books about entrepreneurship in one year. I put all my money and extra time into building a business for 2.5 years.
And I failed every single time...
Until that one moment 2.5 years later, where it all turned around.
In June 2014 - My app company took off, it has since grown to 952,000 downloads, and I spent the following two years with all the time in the world. I made money in my sleep regardless if I worked or not. I traveled the country. I am now traveling the world.
Somehow I had all the time in the world.
Imagine a life where you don't have to spend 9 hours a day at a job, and you are free to do anything, 24 hours a day...
The amount of time I have now is well worth the time I sacrificed in the first 4 years of doing this...
The most interesting part is that out of the thousands of other internet entrepreneurs I surrounded myself with over the past 4 years of my journey...every single one of them made the same sacrifices.
There's a saying in entrepreneurship "You'll be forced to live 4 years of your life like most people wouldn't, so you can spend the rest of your life living it like most people can't"
On the outside, you see the fancy cars, the travel, the nice houses, the passive in come...but behind the scenes of what REALLY happens...is the hard work and sacrifices it takes to get there.
So do you want to continue living your life like you have in the past?
Or are you REALLY committed to living this life as an entrepreneur. Are you ready to make the sacrifices? are you ready to face the failures and struggles most people won't ever face in their entire life?
If you want to be an internet entrepreneur....you have the time - you just have to make it.
To those of you reading this post on the forum...I'll let you know how my date goes on Sunday
At the very least, I feel I have a good rough draft for a chapter in updating my book.
