Hello,

I am new here and this is my first post.

I am currently building a SaaS priced at $100/mo for farmers. It's a risk management and profitability tool. It is a data-heavy application. I know the inside and outs of farming( I grew up around farmlands). But the problem is I am not from the USA but my target market is the USA. I couldn't probably sell my product to my country's people though even if I met them and talked to them because they are not so tech-savvy and willing to spend money.

I am almost done building my product but I keep stumbling upon advice like "talk to your customers first". I know my tool provides value because there are other products in the market that offer way less than what I do but they are doing well. I am a developer so not so hot on marketing and sales.

What would you do if you were me? It's hard for me to even get emails of farmers. I know I am totally missing something here but I don't want to let go of something I have put so much of my time into.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks for your time!

I would have thought this would have been one of the first things you would have done before putting in all the effort of building your product. Then you could have been certain that your tool will translate from whatever country you are in to the farming communities of the US which will probably have major differences.

I would spend some time searching out your customers and find suitable people to test your product in the States before you bring it to market.

A good starting point would be forums like this but dedicated to your market sector.

What country are you in/from?

I am from an Asian country. I have been following blogs on US farming for about 2-3 months so I have a good knowledge of their process too.

Good to know. Well there are a plethora of farming forums out there so I suggest you find a few that are a good fit for your SAAS and reach out there asking for help/advice and feedback (rather than pushing your product on them).

As far as marketing is concerned farmers are just like everyone else, they congregate together on specialist forums, they read the news, they have interests outside of farming, they participate on social media, they use Google and Bing etc..

Look for where your competitors are advertising and it's a good bet that's where you need to start.

Often overlooked are ad placements on the forums themselves. Some will be fed via Google but sometimes you can get an ad directly on the forum quite cheaply for a fixed monthly fee.

Don't overlook paper advertising either. In the UK we have a paper called Farmers Weekly which pretty much every farmer buys (or at least they used to, I haven't been involved in the farming community for a number of years). Sometimes we overlook such things in a digital world.

My buddy is part of the family that started Cabela's and is the largest farmer in his state, he has millions but I'll guarantee you with 100% certainty, you will never squeeze $100 a month from him for something like this. I know several other farmers and if I had to guess, you will never get $100 month from them either but it never hurts to try. My one buddy Brian used to sell nuts & bolts to farmers so I'll ask him what he thinks. He used to talk with them for all over the US every day for several years.

I would definitely speak with the customers before you do anything more. I farm with my dad and live in the rural U.S. and a lot of times, the old timers are stuck in their ways and hate change and having to learn new technology.

The bigger farmers are maybe more prone to purchase the precision agriculture tech, but for the majority, I think you might be hard-pressed to try and squeeze $100/month from them. They're typically pretty stingy, plus commodity prices (corn and soybeans) are in the crapper right now.
