Though everyone should make change NOW the new year does give a type of placebo effect to encourage you to change more. I will stop watching porn not because I think its bad but because itll motivate me to sleep with more women and have more experiences that way. Porn makes me want to just stay in. Fck that.
I will also stop watching mindless youtube videos and televison.
I will also stop procrasinating on things that will help my life. Even if that means doing something that will only make future brian .01% better.
I will also stop bullshitting myself with the fast lane. To be honest its a scary shift and not going to lie I have been bsing myself but no longer. Time to man up and get real about my money situation.

I will limit "bad" foods to once every week. Trying to get to a 6% body fat. Very difficult to do but will keep you lean the rest of your life if done right ONCE.

What are your bad habits you want to escape from?

yeh 6% bf is completely arbitrary plus kind of setting yourself up for failure not to mention not particularly healthy. Why not set targets related to strenght/power standards?

There is no incremental health benefit to push bf below 13 for men, and no athletic purpose to push bf below 8.

If it is for aesthetic, it is subjective. The Male movie stars today do not look super lean too.

It is easy to stay lean with Keto. Carbs tend to fatten any organism up.

Farmers feed their livestock grains because it fattens them up quicker. Farm raised salmon for instance has a higher fat content and probably grains are cheaper...bleh

It almost becomes effortless to stay low BF on Keto

Dont try to do it all at once.
If your goal is to form new habits or destroy old ones then do it one at a time.
Otherwise your will power will wither quicker and discipline will become impossible.
Outline your goals and focus only on one for the next 3-6 months and dont worry about the rest. Once the habit forms or is destroyed then move onto the next goal.

I just read the Atomic Habit by James Clear. It's a very short book with great tips on how to implement new habits, and to break old bad habits. I would suggest reading it, when implementing new habits. It has given me some great insights. Most important one for me will be to have visual cues for habits that I am trying to form.

Id read this too but almost all the major principles in pop psych didn't hold up to repeat testing (as in , didnt hold up under scrutiny when the actual scientific method was applied) and IIRC this was one of them (willpower as a metaphor for a muscle or as fuel)

You can start a new habit like every 3 days , per duke university the trick was ritualizing the behavior and the reinforcement when a new habit was completed. Not sure if that applied for giving up a behavior though.

You are trying to do way to much in way to little time.

Take ONE habit (for example get up at X hours) and follow it without fault for 100 days. Then add another.

To set new habits, sandwich them:

- create a trigger event (the swim gear is always in the car)
- do the action (go swimming)
- reward (10 minutes in the jacuzzi)

Be consistent over at least 75 days for each habit. Do one at a time. Change 5 habits in one year. Replace bad habits with good ones.

Me? Better habits:
Training: I NEED to learn programming.
Marketing: I also need to be consistent with reaching clients.
Writing: it's a formula, I just have to commit to getting it done!

I can probably give up time sinks like social media and too many novels...

6% is absolutely insane. There is literally no point unless you're competing professionally.

Don't set yourself up for disappointment.

He’s probably under the influence of the so called Instagram “models”.

It really bothers me that there’s an unhealthy obsession within young guys with getting jacked, ripped, getting six pack, 3d delts etc for the wrong reasons.

If you are doing it to get girls or to be more confident - you got it all backwards, really. The body is just a “mask” / “a meat suit” to hide your insecurities. Work on them first.

Confidence is a very powerful thing. It can work wonders for your mental health. If it makes you feel good - why not?

I've been hooked on porn since puberty, and quitting porn my biggest achievement in 2019.

Benefits
  • 30 minutes extra a day
  • Date often and social life has been wonderful
  • Natural dopamine
I chronicle the progression here Personal challenge - no porn, no coffee, more discipline!

My personal goal for 2019 is daily 15 minutes meditation

I've bee able to do average 8 - 10 minutes of meditation for 80 days. I recently took a break for a week or so since my family are visiting and it's kinda like a family gathering house now, sofa sleeping and stuff. I will resume meditation in 2020.

My goal more specifically is.
  • Improve from 10 minutes to 15 minutes meditation.
  • Meditate without checking the time (reach time limit naturally)
  • Do it continuously 80 days (breaking my old record)
I have two other goals "O/T: HEALTH - Does anyone count calorie intake?" & "getting rid of bad habits in Personal challenge - no porn, no coffee, more discipline!" but let's nail the meditation goal first!

The biggest habit I need to break this year is a complete lack of time management or strategy.

I've done really well this year, but the truth is that there has been little planning to achieve and I've kind of fallen into things. Luck like that doesn't last forever. It's been a turbulent year on a personal level so I'm not going to beat myself up about it (well any more than I was on my run this morning!) but next year is going to be all about really breaking those goals down and mapping them out.

Days can too easily run away from me or be thrown by last minute demands from clients. Digital and both paper daily plans are the first big change to give me more focus, but also more time to review what is and isn't going to plan.

Here's what's wrong. Stop, stop, stop... How can you motivate yourself if all your habits are about Avoiding to do something?

Habits are cool. They make life easier. If you look to avoid something, there is a reason why you created them in the first place.

What works for me is to keep in motion. Did you hear about the Do Something principle? It can make you do the hard work while skipping distractions. Give it a try.

Thanks for the thread @Brian Suh and good luck. With commitment, and consistent daily work you can make a slow and steady change.

I'm finding that incremental habit-building has been key to get lots of stuff done. Maybe you also heard of that quote - you overestimate what you can do in 5 years but underestimate what you can do in 10. Keeping that in mind, it makes following through somewhat easier when you have the patience.

I would love to keep my focus in check next year. This year I jumped from idea to idea a lot without making optimal progress. My goal is then to stay on task until the work is done (no matter how painful the task can be) and then move on.

Sure, but I believe this fails the SMART criteria for goals in the particular fields of being achievable and relevant.

Perhaps you should expand a little on your broader reasoning for wanting to be 6% bf otherwise it seems arbitrary?

For looks. I’m aware it’s not exactly the healthiest move but it’s what I want and that’s all that matters .

Right so if its all about looks it sounds like what your real goal is to look and be strong/athletic/muscular right?

Visible abs and muscular appearance would achievable with far greater % of bf than 6 and would largely be a by product of a solid strength and fitness training program pursued with dedication over a period of time.

So perhaps your actual SMART goals rather than a particular bf% would be in the direction of maintaining and progressing within a physical training program over a set period of time.

Once you reframe it like that you can make more concrete smaller performance related goals in the program and schedule them to progressively work towards the main big ones.

Why are people on here triggered by the bf% goal? I think most people on here are still quite 'scripted' when it comes to health and fitness, consuming what is normal, and therefore looking like a normal person.

I'm rooting for you Brian Suh!

I'll use this to do a bit of a mea-culpa myself.. .

I think people are taking it from who is coming. If I said something like that I'm sure nobody would take me serious either. Neither him nor I have the best track record of getting stuff done. Lol

That said hey I'm rooting too

i dont get this obsession of telling other guys what to do with their lives. If it helps their insecurities go for it. It may not help them but they wont believe you so let them try for themselves.

Mine is pretty simple (unfortunetly no way to gauge it though.)

I want to make an effort to be charismatic, be nicer to people and be more proactive to be helpful and supportive to people around me.

I can see the benefits when I start to make efforts like this. I want to try to push it further. It might sound like some kumbaya shit, but it really makes a difference for others and your own life. Making everyone around you happy surrounds you with happy people, which in turn makes you happy. They also sometimes return the favor in more tangible ways, which is great.

Also I want to kill my ego, it has never done anything better for me, only made me do and say stupid things, because of "pride".
