I get reflective and philosophical from time to time so if this is drivel no need to respond.
In watching the hurricane damage in the NYC area I am saddened but fascinated. I usually fall into the mental lull that all Americans live basically the same way. My norm is everyone else's norm. I am sure people outside of America feel the same way. I guess that is partially because many of our national news programs originate from the NYC area and a lot of our commerce news comes from there.
I really liked watching the sitcom "Friends" during its heyday. It was a fun little show to me. I really gave no thought to the setting, just inner city. It was supposed to be set in Greenwich Village, again NYC. The show was very popular and had an influence on our country.
I like to watch SNL from time to time and it, too, comes from the perspective of NYC. Interesting.
To me, living in the prairies, it is so foreign to live in down town. It's so weird to rely on mass transit and never own a car or need one. To shop for everything you need within walking distance. To be so densely packed into one area would drive me insane.
I am not saying one way is better than another, just looking at the differences in our people, our country.
I am struck by how much of our society is influenced by TV and a lot of the TV news comes from an area that is radically different from my area and the remainder of America. Problems and solutions that apply in NYC may or may not apply for the rest of the country but there is a mass of our population there.
In our area a car is just about a must unless you live in a downtown area. Commuting is very normal. Shopping trips involve drives of 10 miles or more. No we do not have covered wagons and cowboys and Indian fights. LOL
Just musing out loud on a Saturday morning.....
