Back around 2000 a good friend of mine spent 2 years full-time writing a science fiction novel. Then he self-pubbed it (on paper, in those pre-Kindle days) and spent nearly a year trying to flog it to a publisher, or anyplace else that would move it. He got nowhere, and eventually he gave it up in disgust.
He recently gave me one of his paper copies. I was fairly surprised to discover it is GOOD. DAMN good. Better than many "real" published SF books I've read. He sold a few copies on Amazon, and only got 6 reviews, but they're all 5-star "oh my God this book is incredible" glowing reviews. I told him it was a tragedy to let this excellent book die on the shelf, and asked if he'd considered publishing it on Kindle. He said he'd "moved on" and had no interest in trying to resurrect it. I think it was a painful memory for him.
So I wondered (assuming he'd go for it) if it would be possible for me to put it out in Kindle format, and possibly stir up some interest. My friend is having some severe financial issues and any sale proceeds would definitely help. I'd be willing to help him out with this since he's unwilling/unable to do it himself.
What are the chances of making some decent sales with a book like that? Is it such a long-shot that I shouldn't re-open my friend's wounds?
