Greetings from the flat, windy, wheat-infested world of Kansas! I am a 40-year-old independent consultant who used to think working for myself was the pinnacle of achievement. I work 60-80 hours a week, travel an average of 2 weeks a month, and get paid a decent average amount per hour, plus expenses. Yep... I'm living the dream/nightmare.
I used to be an actual entrepreneur, but somewhere along the way I forgot myself. My first company did pretty well, but I also had issues with a business partner embezzling funds, I've defended myself in a lawsuit (didn't lose, but racked up 6-figure legal fees anyway -- FU legal system), I've had several failed ventures, and I once failed to take a product to market that could have set me up for life. I like to call all that my real education.
A week ago, I read The Millionaire Fastlane . I devoured that book in about 3-4 days, reading in the morning before I started working. For me, it was like water to a man lost in the desert. It also recalibrated my view of what I'm doing and how I'm spending my time. After 17 years of doing this, the only product for sale is still my time and when I don't work, I don't make money. I've known for a while that I hate it, and more importantly, that it's not what I really want to be doing. I needed a push.
I joined the forum because I wanted/needed more after the book. There is so much great advice/strategy/motivating content on here that I've already seen a steep decline in my daily productivity. As valuable as the information I'm gaining has been, the accountability that is soon to come is going to be infinitely more valuable. I'm giving myself one year to replace my current income. I have already benefited from several of the progress threads on this site and I'm looking forward to starting my own soon.
