Update.

Here's our Lineup for April 2015.

Had to make some last minute changes, like ditching the Graphic print camo designs. There may also be some changes after we get our samples in Jan. But for the most part, this is what will be available in April.

Order size is double this time 2400 units

REVO is Mirrored lens. Z87 is Safety Standard glasses with Polycarbonate Lenses, which are pretty expensive, so I kept those to a minimum for now.

Regarding Canadian to US residency - you may want to start thinking outside of the box.

My wife and I were in a 2.5 year intercontinental long distance relationship. We went the visa route for me to move to the UK and it was taking forever. Then I did some research and realized I could get EU citizenship through blood. I applied for the citizenship and got my EU passport within 1 year. Then I moved there, married her, and we moved to the US where she now has her green card.

$100k-$150k or $500k-$1M is find if that's your ONLY way. Often times, there is more than one way to skin the cat. My situation doesn't apply to you, but there are MANY ways to get that sort of thing done.

For example, what are the requirements to become a resident after working in the US on a work visa? Is it possible to get a work visa by getting a job in the US and then applying for residency after a time threshold? Or is your income so ridiculous now that you can laugh off a $150k investment?

Also, what is the purpose of moving to the US? Just to be nearer to your target market? The situation with the returns? Or to avoid conversion fees?

If you just want to LIVE in the US, there are much cheaper ways to do it that don't require you to move your business into the country. You can enter the US for several months at a time and live in a "vacation home" there, for example, so long as you meet a minimum amount of time spent in your home country, for example.

If it's for returns, you can easily move to the use for several months (years?) at a time to handle that. You can use that time to hire an employee in the US to handle returns, as well, for example.

I'm not that surprised sales have slowed; in addition to it now mostly being "too late" to buy for Christmas, there's the added wrinkle that your product is semi seasonal, at least in people's perceptions. Yes, everyone should use sunglasses year round, especially if they drive, but the fact is most people only think about them in the summer; people look at me like I'm a weirdo when I wear mine in the winter out of the car. I think this might be part of the reason why Oalkey started making ski goggles. Yes, people wear sunglasses on the slopes, but they tend to wear goggles more frequently. I'm not sure how you can diversify with the seasonal thing, but it might be worthwhile to ponder how you could break into markets in Australia and South America.

Several of their customer's hoists, dies and work areas were destroyed.
The distributor had to recall everything, eat the costs and deal with a backlash from their customers.
Fortunately, no one was killed.

And the supplier? Told the distributor to suck a lemon.

This is a strong wakeup for anyone looking to sell "certified/standardized" products. Do your due diligence. Vick, I recommend you send your safety-glass samples out for 3rd party testing.

Also, look into CSA/ASME/ANSI regulations for safety glasses. The councilor told me most safety gear, by law, need thorough and repetitive QA.
For example, manufacturers of lifting slings must break every 20th sling they fabricate, BY LAW.

Keep up the great work!

Do your own 3rd party testing. I'd be doing this when you get your sample and before you place your next order.

I'm in the baby furniture industry - and in the last 6-8 months there has been a huge amount of re-calls here in Aus for cots/cribs. All the manufacturers said they meet Aus/world standards. Do a bit of 3rd party testing and none of them do. Those companies with re-calls now must pay for shipping of items back to their base and refund their customers in full. Quick way to go out of business.

Perhaps not the right attitude to have - but I wouldn't trust what the manufacturers say. Always do your own 3rd party testing. Always.

My two cents about selling the safety glasses. You may want to consider getting product liability insurance. Our policy covers us in case something happens with the product and it also includes coverage in the event of a recall.

I really think that if he were on Amazon he would have sold out. I only ran out of stock on 3 products this year since I was better prepared, but last year I ran out of almost everything and many of my friends on Amazon sold out of all their stock last week. The holiday shopping season is over for us now and Cyber Monday was my biggest sales day ever. Dec 13-19 were also huge days. Sales died on Dec 20.

I'm going to try and setup Amazon again.

Just now starting this thread and I'm already impressed. I've seen your ads before (a few of my friends like your FB page) and had no idea I'd find the story here, so cool to see. Congrats on your success Vick and best of luck in 2015!

Update.

Our shades did not pass Z87 testing. So for now, we are just focusing on normal sunglasses with Z80 rating (what we currently have). Maybe a blessing in disguise, this way we don't have to deal with safety issues and lawsuits if something happened. Maybe in the future I'll revisit this when I'm more experienced.

------

Were also looking into an Aviator frame and a Wayfarer style, to be launched while I work on our new 'Custom' Design.

Reason being, we need some variety. I could spend a shit load and make our own molds for these, but they wouldn't be much different then whats already out there. For these 2 styles, I think it's best to go this route and save a crap load of time and money. And to test.

So the Aviator and Wayfarer will be branded with our logo, from already existing frames. More details on this later.

I spent many hours searching for the perfect Avy and Wayfarer that suits our brand. So hopefully we can have these up around April/May. Fortunately I can do a lot with colors and logo placement, size, etc, to give them a little EIGHT flare.

-------

Going to try and work with Amazon again. Seems like sales from there would be difficult, given the competition. But I'll try.

-------

Launching a sister brand for women. Will be a separate entity/website, linked to EIGHT and vice versa. This won't be up for awhile. The wifey is looking into women's designs. Consisting of already made frames, branded with our logo/name, whatever that may be. I'll be designing some graphic work/color layouts and such for them, so there is some distinction from everything else.

We'll send traffic from IWEAR8.com to IWEAR?.com

Sister website link in the top menu.

So each site will mirror each other, with opposite color schemes, etc. Same website themes.

Might be beneficial to tap some of that market as well, at least test anyway, won't cost much.

I want EIGHT to be a Male driven brand. Sort of similar to what Quiksilver does with Roxy.

-------

Sales are still up. Surprisingly. Seems like word of mouth is spreading. Because sales are coming in and very few are conversions from advertising. Good sign. Also, getting repeat customers. Very few returns from Black Friday, think we've had like 4, again, because of fitting.

Been driving traffic with Facebook again. Took a break from IG advertising so that I can test that. Seems to be working ok, getting conversions now. But still expensive. Still tweaking. I want to have an automated advertising system set in place so that I can focus on other stuff and not be contacting IG pages all day long. It can be quite time intensive to do IG shit. So ya, giving Facebook another try.

-------

Inventory is running really low. I guess that's a good thing, but also a bad thing. Hopefully we get our next shipment on time in April.

-------

Setup a Reviews page and system using an auto generated App from Shopify. Its called Yopto \
http://iwear8.com/pages/reviews

Works great.

-------

Sponsored Team Swoop > http://www.teamswoop.com/Team_Swoop/Welcome.html

-------

We get our new V.1 samples in a few weeks. Pretty excited to see the new variations. Hopefully they turn out good.

-------

Talked with my manufacturer about defects. She said they allow small minor defects and not major defects.

But, she said I can do 3rd party inspection, which is for 100% defect free, that don't allow minor and major defects. Somewhat expensive though.

For our 3rd shipment, when we do about 5000 units is where we'll take advantage of this service. In the mean time, 2400 units is doable for us to keep checking them, before shipping.

But it's nice to know that when were doing large runs, the defect rate will be very low. Hopefully. Time will tell I guess.

-------

Working on some apparel as well. Need some up sell products.

Designing some cool graphics for some tees and maybe hats. Maybe a black and white Baseball tee.

simple black and white tees.

bold simple graphics, using only black or white. emphasis on forms and shape, using flat planar geometric shapes.

Working on a cool octopus design, kinda cool as it relates the the number 8.

-------

anyway, that's about it for now.

Wayfarer is very popular in the car tuner culture. I really like your sunglasses even though they're geared towards men. The women lineup of 8 is something I look forward to. As far as Amazon goes, people in different countries sell on Amazon using FBA, like Kerin12.

100% QC will be expensive, but will certainly help when you scale. Just need to be very clear what the 3rd party QC should be looking for. You should have a good idea of the type of defects that occur after inspecting your current stock.

Have you looked at advertising to any other countries outside the US/Canada? Australia is currently in the summer. Might be something to consider once you have 100% QC setup, then you can look into 3PL in other countries. Might be just as cost-effective to ship from the States though?
