Cool. I'll check it out ;) thanks

Printer arrives Monday! STOKED! SUPER STOKED! I'm a happy pappy :)

Very testosterone infused. Manly shades. I could see these being worn in an action movie.

Seriously, I'd buy a pair. How much would I pay ?....well, I'm used to buying very good quality sunglasses so $150-200. I'm very active and these would be great for all I do.

Just as a side note I have a family member that is Active Duty military and he goes through sunglasses like crazy. You should once you develop them get them approved by the DOD and then you would open a huge market.

Wow I wish I had the ability to come up with names like you.
Authorized Protective Eyewear List - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

APEL approved. It's very strict.

sidenote- Wileyx seems to sell very well in the military community. I've never owned a pair personally but when I was in Kuwait and Iraq a lot of people were buying them. They use a foam layer on the inside the fills the gap between the glasses and your face keeping sand and dirt out of your eyes.

Sandstorms are a bitch

You were supposed to get the 3d printer Monday. Did it come? How are things going?

Yes. Got the printer Monday. So far getting great results. Lots of sanding required. I spent 8 hours sanding filler primer.

I'll have an update soon.

Can't wait to see an actual picture....

hmmm. been thinking a lot this morning. I've been making some great progress on the physical prototype, which i'll show in the coming weeks. in fact the progress has exceeded my expectations, especially seeing as this is the very first prototype I've created.

but...

am i creating a need here? or am i just making something that I think is cool? and does the world really care or not for stronger sunglasses. the lock and release triggers are pretty cool. but, again, do people even care about that. or am i trying to hard.

so many unanswered questions, so many uncertainties.

I have a feeling there is a crazy a$$ long road ahead of me. just want to make sure i'm headed in the right direction.

guess that's a question you never really have a definite answer too, until the market tells you.

Oh boy here we go ... doubt. The "desert of desertion", the point where you question yourself and wonder "why?"

This is where great ideas go to die ...

As I read your thread, I was totally stoked and excited for you, until I got to this last post above where you start to "doubt".

The glasses you have above are HOT. I love them. Love the 8. Love the branding. I think you're on to something potentially BIG here.

As for the "need" -- YES, there is a NEED. People need sun protection -- you would be just doing it BETTER or offering it differently. Sometimes your advantage can be simply branding.

And BTW, all these trials and tribulations add to the barrier to entry.

Your doubt is the wall to the barrier, and that makes the opportunity even better. Climb it, get over it, and move ahead.

I look forward to hearing the updates.

Great post, MJ. And Vick - doubt is just our built-in protection mechanism to make sure we don't get hurt. I have been there too with my products a few times but I come out of it everytime when I have reassured myself (or others have reassured me) by putting my concerns to rest with valid reason.

And I totally agree with MJ about your product. You are onto something very cool - WITH a need here. ;)

.... Dido... I'm looking forward to getting a pair. I'm very confident my friends will be wanting a pair too.

Three days ago I was doubting. I emailed a friend for advice. I'm going for it win or loose. Fact is, I worked on my project all weekend and it felt great... and I do work full time.
So keep at it!

Thanks Eskil ;)

Thanks bud :)

I work on this all the time too, my life consumes it. and.... i enjoy it very much :)

I sanded a pair for like over 12 hours, spraying primer filler, sanding, spraying, sanding, over and over until the surfaces were absolutely perfect. and i mean perfect. i enjoyed every minute of it. weird huh.

I after i was done sanding late last night, i went outside poured a glass of wine, held them in my hand. and i said. "i can't believe I effin made these things"

felt pretty damn good. almost shed a tear :)

I'm really excited for this. I'm pumped. I have no doubt the road you're on is THE one to go down. You've built an entire BUSINESS to fund this venture. You KNOW it's a good idea, as do we all.

There IS a need. There are markets out there that are WAITING for this type of thing. You're a F*ckin smart guy, and you knew in your gut this is where you wanted to go. Rightfully so. Keep up the great shit.

thanks Dennis ;)

I can totally relate to this. I have really enjoyed my prototyping work. The feeling of seeing, feeling, and testing something you made from scratch - from a concept in your head - and know you and others can find it useful...is a great feeling!

If you are printing with ABS, you can get a glossy finish without sanding by painting on some diluted Acetone. Do some googleing around for: 3D printing ABS acetone finishing

If printing with PLA use MEK (methyl ethyl keytone).

I am not sure of the details of either method, so googleing around is recommended.

Its a lot easier/quicker than sanding a 3D printed part.

Hey thanks scarab,

I'm printing with PLA

Actually I really like the results this guy got on his Minigun project > Type A Machines Forum | View topic - Minigun project As you can see he's getting amazing results.

So I decided to use the same method, and it works fantastic.

There is very little sanding of the actual plastic. The primer filler fills in the small grooves, so your sanding about 90% filler and 10% plastic. This way the dimensions of the object don't alter too much either. just takes a long time to get the surface completely smooth. But thats ok, patience is important.

I'm more concerned with quality rather then speed.

But I will look into that MEK stuff for future reference ;) thanks

We need moar pics!

Seriously though, I am very impressed with your diligence and creativity. Speed+ for taking great action!

thanks Liberty. Very nice to hear ;)

Pics coming soon, probably this weekend.

Post some photos of your printed prototype, before and after you re-finished it. I would like to see if you are getting the best prints you can get. MOst 3D printers (even makerbot replicator2) need tweaking to get good prints.

Oh chuck ya. Many many hours of calibrating and tweaking. I can still prolly tweak it more. But for now getting good results.

By the way everyone. Did not order the Type A machines printer. They took waaaaay too long too respond to my emails. Weeks. So I ordered the Ditto printer from Tinkerines in Vancouver. Great printer.

And Ya ill post a lot if pics very soon ;)

Interesting idea.

There pretty ugly though.

Vick...intereting I agree. I don't know if around my wrist is where I would prefer my sunglasses. I just put them up on my head. Depends on what I'm doing I guess as to whether they would get in my way on my wrist. And "kinda ugly"...you're too kind. Butt ugly. But that's just me. I would still be they'd sell...limited market.

About to start the silicon mold. Very difficult process for these.

Wish me luck :)
